AM and FM DX

Hi

Yes the DX286 allows for all RDS info to be displayed. Only 98.1 Triple J has RDS, its RDS displayed is ‘EDEN FM’ PI CA87 COUNTRY

Gove FM is automated 24/7 playing album ‘deep cuts’ for the most part. Heard Eton Rifles by The Clash preceded by a track I didn’t recognise from the White Stripes (I have most of their albums!)

Yolngu Radio on 88.9 has live presentation, they play a lot of field recordings of aboriginal ceremonies, makes for fascinating listening

They did have some live shows last time I looked, however obviously not many given the remoteness of Nhulunbuy.

(As a sidenote, when I first tried to get my Alexa to play 2EAR Moruya…it played Gove FM (8EAR) instead!’ )

97.1 and 107.5 should both be Triple J.

No sign of Black Star on 92.9 (Yarrabah) or 96.7 (Atherton)? Both of those put a decent signal into Cairns in 2019. Then again, in the Airport reception would be limited.

89.1 is Cairns FM, a community station btw

It was just a quick scan from the outside smoking area between the arrivals and departure buildings. Smokers were a bit perplexed haha I didn’t hear anything on the extended AM band

For the AM / MW stations, today I moved my KiwiSDR to a new location. While the overall reception hasn’t changed, the signal strength on the stations has improved. The gaps are daytime receivable stations.

The cooler mornings are often the best for tropo (in winter) as they indicate a robust low level inversion.

I’ve also seen it in the evenings as I did last night, it often means the following morning is exceptionally strong although can be rather short range.

Quite a case in point, this morning 5RM and the other Riverland FMs were absolutely booming into Mildura, at times stronger than the locals from Yatpool, something I don’t see very often. Even as I type this, both 5RM and Magic are still at RDS strength over on my second webserver out of town.

Also seen was the rare Life FM with the FFFF PI, with nothing changing according to the RDS sheet.

Staying in Sydney at Woolloomooloo for a few nights.

Never had Newcastle this well in Sydney before.

102.9 is predominantly 2ST, but can hear Triple M in parts.

I have a weak 103.7 2NUR as well.

105.3 is still the Wollongong HPON, and can’t null out 2VOX to get Hit despite my northerly aspect.

I have weak Middle Brother ABCs on 97.1 and 98.7 aa well.

And I’m getting 88.7 Radio Northern Beaches quite well here, never used to be the case.

Went for a drive up to Singleton this morning.

Did a DX scan up at Apex Lookout on the north side of town.

Had some good results, with Coffs Harbour, CW Slopes ABCs, Hit/Triple M Orange at low levels (weak stereo but no RDS) all received. Had Orange ABCs with RDS (was pleased to see 104.3 ABC RN has it’s RDS back). Upper Namoi ABCs except 99.1 (blocked by Gold) also heard - 96.7 and 99.9 with RDS. Also heard a weak Local Radio on 101.9 in a null of Triple J (not sure if Merriwa or Armidale).

Was also pleased to hear all Warkworth mining TXs on air and with stereo separation on Triple J and Power FM. 99.3 Power FM also now on air too. Sadly the same can’t be said for the Bulga ones, still mono and low level audio.

I also noticed the 99.1 Gold relay has a stereo pilot back on, but audio still seemed to be mono output.

92.6 back again on the darwin server, this time managed to get a recording of it. Faded out before the hour sadly, was hoping to get an id then. Also heard it play I don’t wanna miss a thing by Aerosmith

(audio from 92.6)

Edit, can also hear something very very weak on 94.9 and 97.0.

(audio from 97.0, skip to 18 seconds in)

Edit 2, just put a song 97.0 was playing through shazam, identified as Portuguese, which is the language spoken in Timor Leste.

Ironic they played that song! When you’re trying to find out what it was.

Going by single frequency search from Darwin on FMScan.org they are very likely Timor-Leste except for 94.9 which is suggesting a little further distance into actual Indonesia

Darwin DX.

I have heard a few weak stations on the Coolalinga (Darwin) TEF webserver the past few days or so.

These include: 102.1 & 102.9 TEBBA Radio & 103.7 Radio TAB. Does anyone have any idea where these stations might originate?

Looks like 102.9 and 103.7 may be from Katherine? That’s a decent haul if so.

I am more interested in the stuff to the north obviously. Coolalinga is a fair way inland unfortunately, though close to Howard Springs where spectacular results were obtained in a 2001 DXpedition.
