It was when i was there last April.

I couldn’t even really get Kingston SE in Mt Gambier when i was there a couple of years ago.

Any chance that 97.9 is Flow FM?

It’s licenced from Marengo (co-sited with the ABC Melbourne repeater) but on paper has a massive overlap with 90.9, so probably doesn’t need both. Plus, their website is atrocious and there’s no good map of what services are active and inactive.

They also have a few licences that have never been activated to my knowledge (e.g. Mount Buller, Powelltown), alongside Marysville which was never reactived after the fires in 2009.

Interesting to note still no Mixx FM in Lorne on 92.7 either.

Having a quick look, it’s not even mentioned on their website either, and it’s gone from the ACMA book (was still there in the Jan 2023 edition though) so it must be permanently gone. Does anyone know when that might have happened?

I can’t think of many occasions where a broadcaster would have intentionally switched off a licenced translator site and foregone the additional coverage that provides. Maybe Lorne wasn’t lucrative enough to bother given it generally gets the Geelong/Melbourne stations well enough too?

Rebel/Breeze have switched off sites in places like Bourke NSW and Tara QLD due to either a lack of revenue or from competition.

Lorne probably suffers from competition from Melbourne as well as Geelong.

Multiple stations trying to come in on 89.9 this morning in Renmark, couldn’t work out what they were

5RM has a repeater on 89.9 over at Waikerie, that’s probably one… not sure about the other.

Didn’t sound like 5RM when I compared them. Did hear a ‘Triple J’

If I remember correctly flow 97.9 has always just been transmitting a blank carrier but now it’s completely gone. Flow 90.9 was also transmitting a blank carrier for the past year or so but now it seems that has been shutdown too.

likely what the 89.9 was as there were a few other FM stations from that general direction like HIT99.7

Good catch at 660 km then!

I did wonder if it was the Riverina, but I know @ninkeon58 only reports occasional reception in Mildura of the Riverina stations and that’s with an good outdoor aerial.

Because of the way the troppo ducts come in, Riverina FMs are a rarer catch up in this part of the world. Usually an easterly to north easterly wind brings them in.

Feel free to check for it overnight, as we’ve been having near consistent troppo with the cooler low temps. Even now 5SBS is audible, despite it being in the evening.

Last time I went through that way in the Riverland enroute to Adelaide, that translator didn’t seem to be on the air. They need it since the main FM signal is starting to become quite weak at Waikerie and drops off fast with next to nothing at Blanchetown.

Strong opening to the south in SEQ.

Even the Gold Coast DAB was lifted to local strength.

Day three of morning troppo. This morning has brought in the Ballarat commercials, including 102.3 3BA and 103.1 Power FM, both new to me here. Both were received at fair to good strength with RDS, including the broken PI on 3BA of FFFF.

Bendigo commercials were present but quite weak, fading in and out with no RDS on Hit 91.9 or Vision Australia Radio. However Triple M 93.5 did get briefly strong enough to have logged RDS, both live and on the logbook.

Also had MIXX 101.3 Horsham and 3MBR in at good strength. 3MBR is a rarer catch at good strength due to the lower power of the station (3kW) and positioning relative to Mildura.

Again, Mount Gambier ABCs were in along with Ballarat and a little bit of Bendigo and Swan Hill / Goschen.

Update:
Classic FM Riverina has just came in on 88.3, faded up quite strongly. They need to fix the modulation on this one, it distorts a fair bit.

Receiving som low level signals on even frequencies this morning. Watch out for NZ.

Last night’s opening to the south even allowed a partial RDS decode for Breeeeeze on the Gold Coast that is usually very difficult due to the adjacent signals on 100.5 and 100.7 plus the signal strength is poor here.

Had a nice little DX session outside tonight. Weather was cool and cloudy, and a bit breezy.

There was no real coastal tropo to speak of, but also discovered a bit of inland lift. Some stations I got that are often swamped or hampered by coastal tropo were

97.9 Real FM Kandos (101.5 2MG blocked by 2GLA, but did also hear a bit of Triple J Canberra in a null of that)
2MG 97.1 in a null of ABC RN Taree
Mt Dowe ABCs 96.7, 99.1, 99.9, 100.7 but not 101.5 (as above).
Tamworth ABCs on 91.7, 93.9, 94.7 but not 103.1 (Hope was still doing a bit much).

Also had.all SW Slopes ABCs except 89.9 (blocked by Pulse FM Hawkesbury), and all Canberra ABCs, commercials and community stations (including 2XX sneaking in under 2ABCRN Port Stephens). Nothing with RDS though.

106.3 2PNN CW Slopes, Bathurst 95.1, 99.3 and 100.9, Orange ABCs on 101.9, 102.7, 104.3 plus 5kw stations on 105.9, 106.7 and 107.5 heard too.

And a first, also received the Wambo (Warkworth) mining TX 95.7 Power FM in a tight null of Classic Wollongong. That’s 83 km away, and only 20 watts. Not bad.

It’s rare you get anything other than Wollongong on 95.7 in NSW. You usually have to go to the very periphery of the Disaster State to hear anything different (Corryong, Nhill, Menindee, Gold Coast).

Yeah, but there is Wilpinjong as well now, had that up near Coolah coming back from the Warrumbungles once, so not as sparse as it was.
