909 is China. I think they are broadcasting at some ridiculously high power (1000KW) towards Taiwan. I’ve picked them up here in Melbourne before.
I don’t have anything fancy, just one of those RTL-SDR blog YouLoop things. Its not fantastic in terms of directional angling, especially on shortwave. Mediumwave / AM broadcast is good but I’d rather a yagi on shortwave, preferably on another TEF out of Mildura to reduce the RFI it picks up on.
Running at 1MW, it makes sense it absolutely saturates us as well (unless I have my computer and electrical measurements wrong of course). If its really from China I’ve only heard it a handful of times, and always during summer. Never heard during winter.
1512 2RN will be Newcastle not Sydney.
909 will be Asian but can’t remember what country uses that frequency, it’s not used in Australia or most countries as the IF in many/most radio receivers conflicts with it & causes reception issues.
Elad FDM S2 - it records based on the centre frequency you are listening to; though there are other options.
Ah ok. I’m using a YouLoop as well on my HF SDR.
My YouLoop isn’t pointed in the right direction to pick it up, but I’ve listened to it on my car radio and it’s in Mandarin.
Would a more directional antenna help?
Local 909 in NZ and received fine on standard Toyota hybrid Corolla and Yaris Cross.
Came in good nightly, no CCP nonsense there, good Kiwi accents be it Auckland, Waiheke, Tauranga back to AKL via Coromandel, Wellington, Wairarapa, Dunedin, Invercargill or in between the latter two.
Most modern AM receivers won’t have any issues with 909kHz especially if they are SDR, in the past the most common IF in a AM Superheterodyne Radio Receiver was 455kHz especially cheap ones & if you know how they work & realise that double 455kHz is 910kHz, then that would create interference & likely the heterodyne whistle on any station using 909kHz so most countries avoided using it & having any AM stations on that frequency (909kHz & 910kHz, 9 & 10kHz spacing).
In later years or in more expensive/quality superhet. receivers they’d use a different IF, so that issue was avoided on all AM broadcast band frequencies.
909 kHz is from SE mainland China and is listed at 500 kW. It’s been on and off a bit over the last few years but now is seemingly back to full power.
Some other frequencies worth trying are 765 (China), 837 (China), 918 (Cambodia), 1089 (China), 1143 (Taiwan) and 1575 (Thailand). You probably had Thailand on 1575.
I jocularly refer to these mega powered Chinese stations as ‘900 pound pandas’.
Years ago, I remember getting DXXX on 1008 from Phillipines when 4IP faded down. Could be another target?
Yeah there are some Filipino stations about but you really need a big gun setup to hear anything…think a 200 m longwire in an open paddock near Cooma. The main problem these days (compared to the 80s) is that the ABC stations and others no longer sign off overnight; it’s also possible that propagation just aint what it used to be.
This is supposedly the 4-mast transmitter site for 909
Yeah the AM radio I had back then was pretty good too… was branded as a “long distance” radio with a loop antenna… this one
I had analogue radios for many years; one Super radio still in use because of its good AM reception and wide band sound.
This radio was a major upgrade for me. I’ve forgotten all the features but included SSB that was great for crowded bands.
I remember these radios being advertised in the Dick Smith catalogues back in the day and wanting to get one. Being a kid, it was out of reach because of the cost and there was zero chance of my folks buying it.

Doesn’t have the same ring to it, does it?
Queensland FM into Renmark again. Hit 93.5 Gladstone noted with commercials from that general area
Also occurring across the border in Mildura. Triple M 102.3 and Classic FM 101.5 Townsville fading in and out
Radio TAB on 97.5 in Melbourne right now
