AM and FM DX

I’d like to as well :grinning: Unfortunately the best I get is a few screenshots from my friend.

The DX captures from the network of receivers (both FM and DAB) are actually publicly viewable here - DX RADIO by FMNET

Unfortunately though that only seems to cover the receivers within metropolitan France, and not any in the overseas territories (I think there’s one in Réunion as well as the one in New Caledonia, and maybe others).

I will try and ask why that is, and if the New Caledonia receiver could be added in some way.

Point Lookout is a great spot, opposite the gelato shop near the gorge walk, anywhere on that knoll.

2ZZZ and all Mt Nardi signals, 101.3 Ballina, 99.9 Byron, 103.5 ‘Mullumbimby’, all GC services including 104.1 and Rebel Media, all GC digital including nationals from Lwr Beechmont, River, all sub metro communities (99.7 the worst of course), all Bald Knob & Dulong Lookout. All Mt Coot-tha. Zinc 96 they’re too away from south facing slopes.

At other times, I’ve tried and received on the island the Passchendaele Ridge, Mt Mowbullan national services and weaker Mt Kynoch. 95.5 was stronger than 100.7 before 95.5 was moved and hobbled.

All on handeld Sony digital/FM radio.

The old club van of the Little Ship Club also receives 1629 Hot Country Dalby at One Mile. Trusty Toyota.

Family owned Straddie Flyer often has 7/9 GC News on if I take 5:30 service back.

Despite 4G/5G, wifi etc, the noise floor is low in most urban locations. Great for all bands.

Be sure to marvel at microwave tower in Dunwich, huge redundancy of dishes due to air and water temp variation, bending the signal.

Less GC/NSW at Amity yet still fun.

What’s appealing of Point Lookout & the ridge behind Dunwich, with good front to back ratio, you can receive ‘all of the channels’, FM co channel and UHF TV of Bald Knob, Mt Tamborine and Mt Nardi.

Thanks for that summary. I knew Point Lookout was good anecdotally; someone who I went to school with lived there briefly, and told of receiving Gold Coast FM at local strength.

MW would also be excellent of course.

There have been Point Lookout businesses (the shops) who have been promo callers for comps on both SCA and HT. “X from y business at Point Lookout are you excited about our money can’t buy tickets etc?”. So in building coverage is good on the hill facing south.

The ever clever Tony Bartlett, journo at both in his time would call the surf club or some bloke who ran a surf school when there were whale sightings, migaloo (rare, albino whale) sightings, light plane crashes on the long main beach.

MW is great as is SW there. Al’s 5055 (RIP) was easily received as of course the NZ freqs and the Charleville BoM with vastly improved reception than west in suburbia of Brisbane.

Boaties love their toys and this SW reception/visibility of BoM marine forecasts/ people like Al giving it a go when he was GM of Innisfail/Atherton gave me the idea of DRM SW with boating information and music by ‘request’ for boaties as the island’s Little Ship Club has a huge apron of land adjoining the water which would be perfect for a local SW DRM mast.

I asked CreaCast about the FMNET node in Nouméa, unfortunately it’s using a directional antenna with an attenuator (I guess because it’s just intended to monitor those local frequencies), so they thought it was unlikely that any DX would ever appear on it.

The receiver itself is at the OPT mobile networks exploitation centre (CERM).

Maybe someone will set up a webserver or spyserver over there one day!

You’ve got to go east rather than Go West to New Caledonia, but I think that’s being the King Of Wishful Thinking.

I found when it comes to Edge FM (just under 250km), the dipole and Yagi are about on par with each other. However, now I’m getting Hit 99.7 quite often, usually on the Yagi, so I guess that’s the distance where it begins to shine, especially being horizontally polarised. Hit 99.7 is just over 400km.

Recording of both antennas on separate receivers. Left audio channel is Yagi, right channel is vertical dipole.

Do you have photos of your antennas?

A little bit of lift about tonight with the mild calm conditions.

Conditions favoured Sydney and Wollongong - had 2ST fighting to get past the 91.6 Sydney HPON.

Weak Orange ABCs and commercials, all main Canberra stations (except 2XX and JJJ) and Batemans Bay ABCs heard. Most ABCs were in weak stereo, the rest scratchy variable mono, no RDS though.

Did have a bit of Triple M Port Macquarie 100.7 as well.

Whilst temps are expected to climb in the coming days it looks like there might be some north westerlies, which won’t help DXing.

No I haven’t really taken any photos. They’re very amateurish looking, probably not something I want to share haha. But I can tell anything specific about them if you’re wanting to know.

Currently have Triple J trying to fight mix on 103.3 at Buderim

In Brisbane I’m receiving Breeze Wide Bay instead of Noosa. Rockhampton ABCs also coming in.

I ended up stumbling on this - FK8KA: FK8ZHA

I wonder what that site would be like for a remote FM receiver.

I agree though about the (very) wishful thinking part.

Some good SE Qld FM DX past 14 hours or so.
From the Sunshine Coast TEF; signals heard from as far north as Rocky & south to Grafton, NSW. Plenty of new logs from there.
Here’s a sample with RDS.

Also just now pulled in the RDS PI code from Hit 89.1 Kingaroy.

A good opening. Mackay coming into Brisbane as well 98.7, 104.3; Rockhampton commercial.

103.3/102.5 Noosa, are they poor allocations for their area or signal fine in Noosa Shire?

After picking up Breeze Wide Bay all morning on 102.5, Sea FM Noosa finally lifted to a listenable level for the first time for me.

102.3 & 103.1 would have been a better choice, nothing within cooee to risk i/f to/from.

Noted that too from Rob’s remote TEF.
We experience similar ‘blocking’ (reduced signal strength) of semi local coastal stations such as NSW Central Coast & Wollongong stations in Sydney during some coastal longer haul tropo events.

Some of which are permanent… I can hear Wave FM pretty much all the time, but can only get i98 during tropo thanks to News Radio / Power FM.
