AM and FM DX

Thanks for the heads-up on this. Pity no tropo or SpE dx about. :frowning:
I note 94.5MHz 4PNN Newsradio is on as I type this, but the other 3 still off.

The ABC Sunshine Coast Gympie radio transmitter is down due to a power outage 📻 🚫

Local TV stations are also affected.

To anyone who usually listens on 90.3FM or 95.3FM, you can listen live here: https://ab.co/4fEU2Q8.…

Works are under way to restore the transmission.

I think that is PNN from Gympie? Signal strength here is lower than usual.

Thanks for that, forgot about that shared frequency.

It is quite confusing - the ABC FM stations for Sunshine Coast are off but Gympie FM are on while The TV stations for Gympie are off but Sunshine Coast are on.

Update - The TV stations that are off are the Nambour relays (not Sunshine Coast)

It makes you wonder why the generators aren’t working, if they have them at all. I would have thought that would have been an essential item at a major site.

Agree, I was wondering that too, since Dulong covers the middle section of the Coast.

Transmission has been restored for FM.

There’s a little bit of winter lift today on FM… Had 2XX-FM Canberra in scratchy stereo in a null of ABC RN Port Stephens. Had brief RDS pop up on 1WAY-FM.

Genset failed (Not sure why)
Temp Genset taken to site to get stuff back on-air

The maximum at Blackheath (Mount Boyce) yesterday was not much cooler than the coastal fringe. The warm season is almost here.

In Sydney for a couple of nights, in the southern suburbs with a north facing balcony.

Must be a bit of winter lift again as I heard

92.7 HPON Port Macquarie - weak
96.7 ABC Upper Namoi - fair in scratchy stereo
97.1 & 98.7 ABCs Middle Brother - fair, 98.7 in scratchy stereo
102.3 & 105.5 ABCs Central West Slopes - fair in scratchy stereo. And 106.3 2PNN in mono.

Or the high elevation?
I didn’t note your post until 4 hours later, maybe I missed the lift?

Although as a bit of an update I note that signal strengths of 103.5 & 107.5 (Orange) are varying
quite a bit, fading from noise to almost noise free at times & 89.9 appears to be a bit stronger than usual.

I’ve been doing some updates to try and keep the FMDX maps working well for the TEF webserver transmitter ID feature - NCL - FM-DX Maps (fmdx.pl)

There’s a bit of a mystery with 91.5 in New Caledonia (NC La 1ère). I see a few of you guys here have logged it a fair bit via Es, and the main transmitter is listed as being in Nouméa. However, a friend of mine in France has access to an online monitoring system used by French radio stations. It has a node in Nouméa, and there’s nothing at all on 91.5 there.

The only other listed 91.5 transmitter is at the TDF site near Waé on the east coast of Lifou island, with an ERP of 100W!

There’s a France Inter listed on the west side of Lifou island at Nawagued, that apparently transmits with 11kW on 94.5. This site used to have La 1ère on 90.5 at the same power, but this authorisation got removed from the French transmission registry a couple of years back.

There’s a couple of other transmissions on Lifou at slightly higher power too - 98.5 Djiido and 102.5 RRB, both from a slightly different site near Waé at 1.5kW.

Do any of 94.5, 98.5 and 102.5 tend to come in at the same time as 91.5? And do any seem stronger than the others? Did anyone get 90.5 before it was turned off?

I’m guessing that the answer is that 91.5 is either stronger than the listed 100W, from the other site (with 94.5), or the transmitter is just very well placed!

Quick answer for now.

90.5 last received in Dec 2023.

102.5 received at same time as 91.5 every time. 98.5 not always. 94.5 not receivable at my location.

Would have to check recordings for signal strength but 91.5 would be the strongest probably because of the lower frequency.

Although the Loyalty Islands are slightly further away from Australia compared to Noumea, the saltwater path helps with Es. Even Wallis and Futuna has been logged with 100 watts at 2Es distance.

Very helpful, thanks for this, seems like it does pin it down to Lifou then in that case.

By the way, the monitoring receiver in Nouméa also shows that there’s a local pirate on 103.8. Not sure how strong, but could be one to watch out for when the other stuff comes in.

I wouldn’t mind having access to that Noumea tuner (verboten, I know). I’d be interested to know how often high powered FM from QLD and northern NSW gets in via tropo. Es of course would be a cinch.

Canberra FM would have been in the day I logged Noumea via tropo.
