AM and FM DX

That’s usually the station I associate with that frequency when something is received in Brisbane from the south. (Otherwise it is ABC Rockhampton).

Hey y’all,

Need a bit of help on tonights DX adventure… have a 97.9 abc classic here in South East Qld. My research says Mackay but not sure. Any input would be valuable.

Just for my personal log

Thanks

That would usually be Coffs Harbour - Mt Moombil. Received along with 91.5, and 99.5 and possibly 92.3 and 90.7

Hi @Mechsta Do you know if the following Coffs Harbour stations have a RDS PTYN defined?:
104.1 CHY FM
105.5 HIT
106.3 Triple M

Also wondering if CHY is back to normal RDS now?
Any Advanced RDS TEF Screen pics would be useful.
Trying to clean up some old material within the RDS List. :slightly_smiling_face:

In Brisbane for a midweek holiday, DAB+ Gold Coast received from my 11th floor apartment looking south over South Bank. 20m ASL and excellent LOS to the south. Only can get reception in one spot.

Mt Tamborine DAB+ only, no reception from the ABC Lower Beechmont site.

Also flicked the band for some fm dxing.
Sunshine Coast fm received even from the Southern side of my Hotel. Hot 91.1 the strongest followed by Mix 92.7, and 91.9 Sea fm the weakest.

River 94.9 at local strength with full RDS decode.

Weak ABC’s from Mt Nardi

Gold Coast fm, Triple M Gold the strongest, followed by Sea, 94.1 sns Hot Tomato. Weak JJJ / ABC Gold Coast.

Very weak Gold Coast Rebel / Breeze. The logan Rebel on 90.5 and Breeze on 92.1 were almost at local strength with RDS decode. Where is the transmitter site for Rebel / Breeze Logan?

105.7 was RN Darling Downs. Interestingly on my hire car radio I was receiving 105.7 RN Darling Downs on the Sunshine Coast.

I noticed today the Noosa relays for Sea / Mix and Hot 91.1 are all on air now.

It is located at Mt Dunsinane, approx 8km NE of Beaudesert.

Can you get the Noosa relays where you are? If so that’s impressive!

The Sunshine Coast TEF node can also get Mount Mowbullan (Darling Downs) ABCs. There must be a path through the ranges, much like Armidale gets into Kempsey.

Not here in Brisbane but they did scan on the car radio at the far northern end of the Sunshine Coast on approach to Noosa.

I think most of the Sunshine Coast gets some level of Darling Downs ABCs, as I recall years ago the failed attempt of News Radio on 104.1 was aborted due to Triple J.

I also had the Darling Downs ABCs up past Gin Gin towards Miriam Vale when I was there a couple of weeks ago. It gets out pretty well.

Snow wasn’t unheard of on Mount Mowbullan in the 20th Century so it’s quite high up, no doubt with a great HAAT. I haven’t been there myself.

There is apparently a gap in the ranges to Wide Bay. In the early days of TV people in the area would put up antennas to receive the Darling Downs TV stations especially before the local channels started.

Good signals from ABC Rockhampton this morning.

It must be a pretty wide gap as I had some reception in Hervey Bay and Bundaberg too. And that it’s fairly flat there which helps the signals to climb over. I don’t recall hearing them in Gympie, which would be understandable as it’s much hillier around there.

Unfortunately you do not get much in Gympie.

Tower on the left is the old DDQ-0 Tower with the digital tower behind it home to 7,9,10, tower on the right is the BA tower which has ABC/SBS DTV and National FM service’s

Would there have needed to be much change to the original ADBQ 3 array to accommodate the national FM services?

Flew back from Brisbane to Sydney today, and spent the 1.5 hour dxing on my portable.
On the right hand side of the Jetstar A320 so had western signals.

Highlights-
River 94.9 was the last one standing of the Brisbane stations making it just south of Tamworth at 35,000 feet 10,670m ASL.

Southern Darling Downs Nationals fed into the upper Hunter Nationals.

No Tamworth or Armidale SRN fm’s even though I was overflying them.

Mt Dowe to around Newcastle.

Canberra and CWS from north of Newcastle, CWS was the most dominant.

Yeah, 104.1 is a more reliable Triple J than 89.5 when you get out into the Hinterland and into its shadows. I’ll forever be perplexed that DDQ Mt Mowbullan and SEQ Nambour shared Channel 10 for so long - surely they interfered with each other back in the day.
