Narrawong - 92.9FM 3HA, >300km, -79dBm
King Island - 88.5FM ABC Radio, >250km, -81dBm
King Island - 97.3FM ABC Classic, >250km, -88dBm
King Island - 99.7FM ABC Radio, >250km, -88dBm
King Island - 100.5FM King Island Community Radio, >250km, -86dBm
What makes King Island Community Radio a little more special is, only 200 watts, no live stream from what I could find, island with small population.
Good FM DX on the west coast this morning. Hearing as far as Carnarvon 106.1 and 107.7. A few other notables -
107.1 Triple M WA. FM stereo, but mono audio. Can only find a listing for Barrow Island - surely not.
101.3 Hit WA also FM stereo but mono audio. Three Springs 480km, 500w.
106.3 Triple J, no FM Stereo. Morawa. 470km 500w.
Thatâs an amazing distance for only 280Watts! Well done.
Given distance & power, Iâd also say âsurely notâ.
More likely some mining station not operating on their allocated frequency, but where is the question. Only the direction of the tropo could provide leads along with some expensive investigative car trip (or multiple email/ph calls to mining sites?)
Looking again, I suspect Coorow perhaps - near Three springs and Morawa. The 6SBSFM 107.1 license may be 6SAT instead. A more suitable choice for a small community Iâd think anyway.
I have heard Barrow Island once before⌠in Exmouth at the lighthouse lookout.
The upcoming heatwave in SE Australia is likely to feature relatively robust easterlies along the coast. The lengthy run of heat combined with stable air (minimal thunderstorms) suggest that NZ tropo could be possible. Look for the appearance of Eden as a precursor. A reminder of the likely channels:
You did not mention 92.6 Concert Fm Auckland as a potential. If the TCL on 91.6 is on air it will rule out any Northland reception here. 91.8 and 92.6 are the only clear frequencies in my part of Sydney.
Also in the next couple of days there should be some enhancements between Sydney and Canberra, and then some coastal tropo before the potential NZ on the weekend. See how it pans out.
Yeah I forgot about 91.6 being on air, but still a chance for those out of Sydney. Thereâs also 93.2 in Northland (Hauraki) that gets out OK. Iâm not sure if 92.4 MHz ( ex R. Trackside) has been reactivated there? That used to get out well.
92.6 Auckland is definitely possible too, but I find that the listed three are a bit stronger via tropo from experience.
A Sony XDR tuner or TEF tuner will sort that out. These two are the gold standards for selectivity; the Airspy HF+ SDR (whilst still very good) doesnât quite match the Sony in terms of fidelity/selectivity combos.
I canât comment on fidelity as I donât own either of the above mentioned SONY or TEF tuner. But for sure, in terms of selectivity comparing âbare-bones software settingsâ of Airspy HF+ within any compatible software, from what Iâve heard in videos comparing the Sony XDR tuner to the AirSpy Discovery/HF+ the SONY XDR tuner appears to have the edge.
If you use SDR# software with the HF+ & properly utilize the Noise Reduction software settings better DX audibility can be achieved.
But in terms of improving the selectivity of the HF+ on FM broadcast band with SDR# software:-
The asymmetric filter can help with adjacent channel interference to one side or both. 2. This is the MAJOR point to highlight to you. Utilizing the FM Co-ch Canceller software âeffectively & proficientlyâ for ONE only adjacent channel interference station you can achieve spectacular adjacent channel interference rejection results that both equal & I suspect would or could exceed that of the SONY XDR.
I suspect some folk havenât fully exploited or even used this feature for adjacent channel rejection with FM dxing. Something worth exploring.
The FM Co-channel Canceller software tool IMO for dxing works better as a Adjacent Channel Interference reduction tool than for Co Ch cancelling. The downside in Adjacent Ch interference reduction usage is that it takes time to input the settings & adjust controls to obtain the desired results.
As a recent observation on usage of the FM Co Ch SDR# software. I noted recently in one case where both stations on the one frequency were of similar strength, maybe within 5-10dB of each other & both of semi local strength. In that situation I achieved very good results, in that I could completely phase out the audio of the stronger station & could clearly hear the slightly weaker station without noise or interference. I admit the situations I encounter like this are in the minority, but for CoCh phasing the softwareâs advantage is that (usually poorer) results are achieved very quickly unlike with a dedicated external Phasing Device.
Some crazy tropo tonight, more to do with some massive fades (signal bends) upwards.
Newcastle national fmâs at local strength, commercials and communities at moderate strength, with Triple M Newcastle at times decoding RDS.
Also weak 2HD Port Stephens.
BTW this morning received 97.9 2RN Goulburn for the first time on the car radio on the drive to work. It was much weaker than Eagle fm which was quite strong.
I can see how GNFm causes minimum interference to Triple M CC.
I am still waiting for a massive opening when GNFM wipes out Triple M CC.
What is interesting tonight is the massive fades on the Central Coast commercials which I have not experienced before.
Both Star 104.5 and 107.7 Triple M CC faded right down below the noise floor., there was no hint of the signal, just static.
Hit 101.3 the strongest Central Coast signal here only lost it RDS and got down to a weak scratchy f stereo signal, not a complete loss of signal like the others.
Another null at the moment with the Central Coast communities below the noise floor. Allowing Power fm to be received with out CCI.
Similar to what Ant is experiencing down here in Bowral.
Newcastle Commercials and Community stations (RDS on 99.7 and 106.9) including 2NUR in a null of Sky Racing Nowra.
2GLR on 101.5 in a null of Triple J Canberra
Weak Max FM in a null of 2SER.
Central Coast community stations.
Which means itâs an opening to the North East.
Some more ducting tonight,
97.5? 2HD Port Stephens strong enough for an RDS decode.
101.5 Great Lakes received if I offset the tuning to 101.45.
Triple M CC strong enough for an RDS decode, Hit 106.9 and New fm below RDS strength.
Tonight duct stretches from Port Stephens into Sydney. I am sure I will have have repeats of this tropo over the new few nights.
Newcastle Commercials and Community stations coming in for the second night in a row.
Middle Brother ABCs
Port Stephens FMs are also in (95.1, 95.9, 97.5, 98.3 (in a null of 2XX-FM), 100.9)
90.5 is a mix of Alive 90.5 and 2HD Belmont.
Canberra stronger than usual and DAB was received from that location.
May get stronger through the night; inversion is deepening. 21C at Cabramurra (1450 m ASL) and only 17 at Braidwood. Some solid tropo echoes off the coast as well. There should also be some tropo across Bass Strait tonight by the looks of things.
The inversion @dxnerd was talking about is coming into Sydney now. Canberra nationals at weak to moderate strength, Classic fm, and News Radio.
Eagle fm now making an appearance., and received in stereo. Also the new Radio National Goulburn on 97.9.
Orange enhanced, and Hit 105.9 just above the noise floor.
Quite a good range of stations tonight, from the very weak Middle Brother, to all the Newcastle fm stations belting in, and now Canberra and Goulburn.
