There is a theory that this late burst of Es is correlated to a slight decline in solar flux. The peak of the current solar cycle is expected later in the year.
New Caledonia in now 90.0.
Second spurt for the day or has there been more?
Hobart and Tas into Brisbane with RDS tonight (only low frequencies so far)
About 10 minutes ago did get music on that frequency fading in and out so it must be 1ere Nouvelle-Caledonie
I heard French language with typical Es fading & then I spotted Es activity on the Canberra Ionogram map, so I knew there was Es about.
Shortly after posting the signal disappeared here.
I was wondering if some Qld to Tas/NZ South island Es might be occurring after observing the Canberra chart:
https://www.sws.bom.gov.au/HF_Systems/1/3
@TV.Cynic confirmed the path open from Bris to Tassie
The DX Maps & WSPR pages didnât display any paths to NCL, but Sydney to NCL Es opening was brief here.
The Canberra Es cloud could be intensifying a little.
No benefit here as the FM dx is skipping over Sydney at the moment (atm).
That said there is some tropo about atm favouring Newcastle & Taree.
The SDR# Co-Ch Canceller proving effective for Newcastle DX on 106.9 & 100.5 for rapid dx IDing.
Thanks for that source, does prove useful for detecting E-Skip
The ionograms are hit and miss; they can detect Es if the cloud happens to line up with a capital city but not otherwise. If the intense ionisation is halfway across the Tasman (for NZ) or the Coral Sea (for NCL)- to take two examples- then they are of little assistance.
DX Maps is better; there is an extrapolated MUF based on the frequency, intensity and distance of 50 MHz contacts at a guess (shorter paths at 50 MHz usually indicate intense Es and a chance at FM).
MUF seems to be dropping now (it was showing >90 MHz earlier, coincident with the FM reports).
WA has had to Wait Awhile for some Es. This morning the DX drought broke and a grand total of 3 stations where logged.
102.9 Hit WA
106.9 ABC RR WA
107.7 RN WA
All on the same 0.8mhz spacing but couldnât pinpoint a location. Got a free WA geography / mine site lesson in the process!
Kalbarri lines up with this list, except ABC RR is 106.1 rather than 106.9.
Strong CQ signals including Gladstone tonight. Mackay at low levels.
Thatâs a better website, compared to the ACMA PDF and CTRL + F 1000 times!
Actully Broome has a 102.9, 106.9 and 107.7. Definitely a mono Hit station on 102.9 and ABCs Conversations on 106.9, in sync with my local ABC.
Last summer yielded 5 or 6 unlisted stations from remote WA, due to either an inaccurate ACMA database or mine sites broadcasting âwhatever they wantâ.
Unsolved.
If you have a PC, ACMA also have an Excel database that can be filtered by any combo of callsigns, frequency, state, location and others.
The PDF lists are also available in frequency and callsign order.
Yes this happens in Central QLD as well. Thereâs an unlisted Rebel on 92.1 which has been picked up this season, to take but one example.
Downloaded and saved on my desktop. Looks handy. Cheers.
I got curious about that Google Earth .kmz dowload files link under the excel files. Looks like that could be a real hand mobile phone solution. Fast and easy if you have a rough idea of transmitter location.
The Google Earth files are great!
Third day in a row for Rockhampton ABC and commercial troppo into Brisbane, last two have included Gladstone at low levels. Mackay on 98.7 and 104.3 again as well.
Update - day 5 for continuous Rockhampton reception âŚ
ABC RN 103.1 :
Mackay in again later in the night,
Enhanced reception still going strong from the north with Rockhampton at listenable levels still for day 6. Last night it extend up to Mackay. The whole time Wide Bay has been enhanced as well. This morning also down into northern NSW.
96.1 SAFM into Melbourne again (late at night). Would be good to hear other stuff but I feel it gets lost in the static in the suburbs. Brief recording:
Some enhanced tropo reception Syd to Illawara tonight.
Coastal reception should improve throughout the evening &
some further areas overnight according to the Hepburn Maps.
Update Sat 9am: Orange, Bathurst & Portland area stations now stronger than an hour or two ago. Signals probably near peak levels now.
