AM and FM DX

Maybe it’s because there’s not been much DX to speak of, especially with storms lashing much of the East Coast.

Yep, that’s why.

There was a bit about this morning, nothing exceptional though, but better than usual… I will try later tonight.

Better than average reception tonight, but nothing outstanding.

I have the Sangean DRP-67 out tonight, SWR with RDS is the main thing to report tonight. WAVE and i98 also in with RDS.

On a side note, VOI is back on air on 91.6. Yesterday, in average conditions on the Teccy, I had it at 13db, which is better than 98.5 2000FM (11db) and 2SER at a pretty shite 8db. How is it that a supposed temporary station can get out better than some of the permanent ‘Sydney wide’ community stations?

It is amazing for a temporary station. Down in the Illawarra, even as far south as around Shellharbour & Kiama, it often messes with reception of 2ST’s 91.7 service from Jervis Bay, so 91.6 is seen as a nuisance down there.

With 91.7 being a possible new frequency for Coast FM (see “Central Coast Radio” thread for more), I think 91.6 could no longer be used for temporary broadcasts in Sydney.

I agree re VOI and 91.7.

VOI will probably pop up on 89.5 or 90.7 - or even 96.3 - if that happens.

A bit more mild tropo tonight.

A bit of 94.1 Wollongong being able to break through Central Coast.
Wollongong commercials and ABCs in at over 40db (Power only 27db).

VOI 91.6 in at 23db.
C91.3 at 38db.

High power Sydney stations otherwise pretty normal, though more community stations receivable tonight.

Finally something into Brisbane today!! Victorian stations including Melbourne 88.3, 89.9, 90.7 and Smooth 91.5

Example of RDS from today

Mt Dowe ABC stations 96.7, 99.1, 99.9, 100.7 have been receivable for most of the day.

Getting 3SCB Southern FM (88.3) into Brissy is particularly good!

Started after at 1pm

More unseasonable but welcome skip yesterday into Brisbane with South Australian stations coming in. Signals were never very strong for me but was able to get clear IDs. Received all the Adelaide Foothill stations except 90.3. Also some main Adelaide transmission including 5DDD (over top of semi local on 93.7) and Mix. Also signals from surrounding areas like Hills FM 88.9. Gulf FM was strong enough overcome Gold Coast on 89.3.

A bit tropo again tonight.

Canberra stations including 1CMS, 1WAY and 1XXR (2XX) all receivable.
Thus am getting my first taste of Hit104.7 since the launch.

Also in News Radio 89.7 and JJJ 100.1 Bega and B-Rock Bathurst 99.3.

Thus it gIves me 5 different JJJs tonight.

Another first!

96.7 QBN FM Queanbeyan

That’s interesting that you are getting 91.7 2ST

VOI 91.6 is preventing reception of that for me, even up at Charlestown near Newcastle.

Along with the aforementioned Canberra & Middle Brother stations that the others are getting, I’m also getting some of the Mt Dowe (Upper Namoi) stations, including 96.7 ABC Classic FM, 95.9 Sky Sports Radio & 97.5 2GGG.

After a very quiet few weeks, fingers crossed that the storms stay away and we get some more tropo to see out the summer.

Depends on how good your radio’s selectivity is, I guess. I’m using a Blaupunkt CD30. It can resolve 88.0 (Raw FM) and 88.1 (2RDJ) separately without issues as well.

That’s interesting, as I have a Tecsun PL-880, which is supposedly a dedicated DXing radio, but does have trouble with 100 kHz spacing on FM, and in some cases with 200 kHz spacing too. In the 200 kHz case, the signal is still listenable just not as clean as it could be, in comparison to my previous Tecsun PL-390 anyhow.
