My parents’ 2015 Subaru Forester car radio can pick up distant stations that are 200kHz away from local stations. I’m pretty sure when VOI 91.6 was on-air in the middle of last year, I’ve managed to pick up 91.5 ABC NewsRadio from Mt Ulandra (near Cootamundra) quite clearly near my home location, despite VOI being right next door.
I agree. January was generally quite a flat month for tropo, so it would be quite nice to see some more over the next few weeks.
Anyway, those are some fantastic catches Radiohead, tvcl and TV-Expert!
Tropo is still up this morning at 6:30am - my catches:
107.1 - ABC Local Radio Western Plains (dominating Highland Radio)

All received on car stereo and on a portable radio. It was probably the strongest signals I’ve ever received!! Excellent skip across the Great Australian Bight works in our favour.
Went up the hill to the water tower at Accacia Gardens.
On the car stereo News Radio Cooma / Bega was completing overpowering the Sydney community station on 89.7
100.1 was a mash of JJJ Cooma / Bega and Hornsby community radio.
Cooma / Bega is a first time for me at this location.
Also receivable were the Canberra Nationals. Eagle fm, Zoo and Real fm Mudgee.
That’s a good effort to get Rhema Dubbo!
Wow, yes, I’ve heard there’s some great skipping that can go on across the Bight at times.
The reverse direction CAN apply too, I believe.
Just wonder guys now analog tv is off does anyone try dxing with the tv.
I try the odd bit of digital TV DXing when conditions are REALLY good, but I don’t do anything with analogue anymore.
Yeah I think now that analog tv is off in nz. Might be difficult in the southern states. Not sure of the status in asia.
I’d have to check but if I’m not mistaken, analogue TV was switched off completely in New Zealand in Late 2013…around the time that Sydney switched (maybe just before it?) I think.
I’m sure that Digital TV DXing is quite possible when tropo on FM is good-excellent, but unfortunately there’s not many spare frequencies left for TV DXing around these parts.
Tropo is more of a hinderens for digital tv thanks to the genenius who put Newcastle and the Illawarra on the same frequency. As we all know the two signals mushing together cancel each other out.
Is it possible to get tropo reception of Bowral / Mittagong digital tv translator into Sydney or Central Coast regionals into the northern beaches.
I wonder what the opportunities Dab+ tropo will bring if and when Newcastle / Central Coast / Illawarra get Dab+ up and running?
For me, long distance TV is pretty much restricted to the few vacant channels in the SEQ area. Probably the most promising channel to check is the old channel 10 frequency as one of the few Band III frequencies that are vacant in metro areas. That has the potential to be propagated the easiest during tropo openings as some regional areas use Channel 10.
A bit of activity about right now…
It’s a rarity in that BOTH Sydney and Wollongong ABC/Commercial high power stations are all in at around 50db or better.
A rare appearance from 2RSR 88.9 (at much lower levels) which is one of my most difficult ones to get.
Middle Brother ABCs also in at much better levels than normal too.
Faint ABCs from South Coast (Mt Wandera) too, so this duct is covering a fair part of the NSW Coastline.
Not much to report from inland yet.
Reception from Northern NSW this evening into Brisbane with 104.7 and 2GF from Grafton/McLean and 2ZZZ from Lismore plus Richmond Valley Radio on 89.9. These are always a challenge for me at my location. ZZZ in particular is usually no change against ABC at Wide Bay on 100.9
Some DX around tonight it seems in Brisbane. Getting 101.9, 103.5 and 105.1 from Maryborough at the moment, and had good reception of 2ZZZ and Bay FM Byron as well. Some new catches for me at this location, especially 103.5 which is right next to the local blowtorch on 103.7
The Hepburn maps look good for some coastal tropo from Northern NSW right up the Qld coast, so it could be worth checking the dials into the night
Good catches, I find 105.1 harder to get than 103.5. thanks to Hit 105. Looking forward to some good catches tonight.
Yeah funny how that works. I don’t have so many problems with hit105 but 4MBS and SBS are the two that give me most grief. Here in Brisbane’s inner west I find 103.5 and 103.9 generally unusable, but I guess that’s expected given I’m only 3-4km from the stacks on Coot-tha
Also hearing a faint signal on 95.5 from Bundy - that’s a first from this location, don’t normally get the north coast signals here at all
Yes SBS is a pain for me too but conditions are so good tonight I am getting 93.1 SEA from Bundaberg.
