AM and FM DX

I have done the drive across the Hay Plains back in July 2013. Mildura FM can be just heard in Hay, although the next morning heading west just out of town, reception was far better but I suspect there was some tropo enhancement. Griffith FM and AM went a long way with the FM getting to near Balranald, again possibly tropo enhanced.

Yes, 963 from Griifith gets out a long way. I received it at Ouyen yesterday.

And conversely, I had 5RM clearly in Griffith 1pm today.

Relatively flat terrain also helps. 2BH has been heard in Griffith during the day before, not sure if it still can be.

Yes, I remember getting it at Junee in the afternoon once too.

I think I received 2BH when I was at Griffith earlier today too. I will check my notes later.

@Radiohead who else is in the car with you on this trip, they must be getting the shits with you changing the radio station all the time.

And that right there is why many DXers are bachelors.

Nope, just me… and I would be the same if it someone else changing the dial on me every 2 minutes!! (literally)… I only leave the radio on the same frequency for more than 2 minutes if there a great song, or some intelligent topic on (which is rare).

I have a girlfriend and i DX… tho me changing tnt channel all the time eventually drives my girl up be wall and she ends up listening to music on her phone haha

It helps to have an understanding wife, as I do.

My lovely lady generally wants to put her Spotify playlist on in the car, so I have to drive alone if I want to play with the dial. Although to be fair she is fairly understanding of my weird habits most of the time, like when on a summer’s day I sit alone in the bedroom ignoring her just so I can listen to crap music coming in from a far away location

I get into trouble too. When going on Family outing I always sneak my radio on my pocket. On the weekend I went to Maroubra and sneaked a radio in my pocket but nothing worth reporting here. My Mrs is fairly understanding with my radio habits and accepts it. As with @gordo92 its great these days they have their iphones. So I have more freedom as a result. It does make it challenge when I am only interested in getting a radio or earbuds for my birthday. My requests are rejected often..

One of my mates sometimes sits in the car, I get annoyed when he wants to switch off the radio. We are a strange breed. Most people probably don’t care.

I think I posted a list on what makes me a radio nerd, I use to plan when I was a kid for holidays around my radio DXing (selfish) needs. Lately its been hard to get away like @Radiohead did. I am a bit jealous to be honest .

Ahh yes DXing something I did a fair bit before moving to Moree NSW. Sadly in this town it’s very hard to do due to the fact the towns electricity supply is that dirty that it spews noise across the entire spectrum and unless it’s a strong signal it won’t be audable over the very high noise floor

I did manage to get the following FM catches on elevated spots away from Willans Hill in Wagga today.

News Radio Wollongong 90.9
Weak Bendigos on 90.3, 91.1 and 92.7
Weak Canberras on 91.9, 101.5, 102.3, 103.9 and 105.5
Eagle FM 93.5 with RDS
Weak 2TVR Adelong on 94.1
2TVR Tumut on 96.3
Still UnID station on 95.7 (wasn’t Classic Wollongong, sounded like the one I got at Griffith).

On AM, noted that daytime reception of Melbourne ABCs (fair) were better than Sydney’s (very weak).

From all @Radiohead reports, I am happy 549 am blowtorch should cover at least the northern part of Victoria for my NRL fix during the day on the weekend. Should I end up traveling for some unknown reason in the future. I did use to drive to Brisbane and Melbourne to watch the Parra eels when I was single back in the late 90s and early noughties.

Yes, I didn’t go further south than Swan Hill, where it was very weak, and from previous experience it is weak in Albury too, though its quite good here in Wagga.

Not sure that it’s going to be good enough or reliable enough to listen to full NRL games on though. Streaming would be better if you’ve got the data and mobile coverage.

Your 95.7 may have been the (s)hit translator from Mount Elliot/Corryong? It has been logged by VK2KRR at The Rock and his LOS to that direction isn’t all that good.

Thanks, I don’t think that was it. When I received it yesterday in Griffith, it was playing country music. Sounded like the same station today, had a community radio feel to it.

Not a spur of 2MIA (95.1)? In any case, I might be able to see for myself as I should be going on a mini DXpedition to Hay at the end of the month.
