AM and FM DX

Given I got it in both Wagga and Griffith, I didn’t think it was that.

Spurs don’t normally travel that far, but those awful NEW FM spurs that thankfully are now long gone might say it’s possible.

Back in Sydney now (short hop home to Newcastle tomorrow).

Today’s report comes from the Crookwell Wind Farm Lookout (10 kms south of town) at 1pm today.

SW Slopes ABCs 88.3, 89.1 89.9, 90.7, 91.5 good. Nothing from Hit93.1 Wagga though.
88.9 Braidwood BRW FM picked up on auto seek. Looks like no RDS at the moment though.
All Wollongong ABCs picked up on auto seek. Power FM strong with Power-FM RDS. Wave and i98 weaker with no RDS.
89.7 News Radio Bega fair, 100.1 JJJ weak (other freqs blocked).
All Canberra community, commercials, ABCs on auto seek with RDS where available. No surprise there given the great take off to the south. See 102.3 still has their Dynamic ABC / Classic / FM RDS (yuk yuk).
92.5 2WYR with musicFM RDS.
All Sydney commercials 95.3, 96.9, 101.7, 104.1, 104.9 and 106.5 were fairly weak.
95.1 2BS FM RDS. 99.3 B-Rock fair too, but no RDS (have they ever had it)?. SKY Sports 100.9 from Bathurst received too.
96.1 with XLFM96.1 RDS. No RDS from Snow though, which surprised me, given that’s supposed to be slightly stronger than XL.
96.7 QBN FM Queanbeyan with RDS. Also got 95.9 JJJ and 99.1 Classic from Tuggeranong too, only fair though.
100.3 Yass FM good.
Orange ABCs good 101.9, 102.7, 104.3 (last one on auto seek). Other Orange stations on 103.5, 105.1, 105.9 and 106.7 received too - all fair, but no RDS here.
102.9 2ST with RDS and song info. Strong
This one surprised me, SKY Sports Nowra 103.7 over Eagle FM Crookwell, despite being only 10 kms out of town.
104.5 2UUU Nowra no RDS
105.7 Triple J Sydney. This seemed to come in the best of all the Sydney stations, which surprised me. It’s usually the weakest of the ABCs at home for me.
107.1 2WKT Bowral, good
106.9 and 107.7 Crookwell nationals only fair. The latter hasn’t moved to 104.5 though.

AM

549 2CR good, auto seek
576 and 702 Sydney good. Though 630 only fair. All still auto seek though.
603 RN Nowra weak
Canberra 666 and 846, both good, received on auto seek.
One surprise is that 1125 1RPH Canberra was clearer than 2CA and 2CC.
It auto seeked, but CA and CC didn’t. Nothing on 1323 at all (or is that off air?).
765 2EC Bega weak.
900 2LT Lithgow weak.
999 2ST Nowra weak
1152 Triple M Wagga weak.
1215 HPON Bowral weak
Nothing on 1224 from Sydney. That surprised me.
1350 2LF Young was fair, but suffered from 2GN splatter.
1494 2AY Albury fair
Fair reception on 1566. Wasn’t sure if this was 3NE. Was stronger than 2AY.

Nice logs. Thanks for great reports.
Been like following a radio excursion with the Leyland Brothers

Yes B-Rock Bathurst has RDS. Maybe it’s one of those stations you can’t receive the RDS on due to PI code commencing with zero. Sorry I don’t know their PI code.

I guess before XLFM it would be The Edge 96.1.

Both 2BRW and Snow FM definitely have RDS. Not sure what their PI codes are?

Crookwell Wind Farm is a favourite spot of mine, definitely favouring the south as you noted. The Nowra services come in well there also. You can also often hear Albury via As over the top of Sydney.

Looking at the Radiation Pattern Details of each of the above Canberra AM stations, in the direction of the Crookwell Wind Farm, 2CA has a CMF of around 157-178V, whilst 2CC has a (night-time) CMF of around 90-280V. By comparison, 1RPH has a CMF of 530V in that direction.

These figures back up on why 1RPH came in clearer than both 2CA & 2CC at that location.

I can hear 5MU mixing with 1RPH here in Bungendore at night, as well as 2GF mixing with 2CC. 1RPH is almost unlistenable at times.

2CC has always struggled on that freq. I wonder if they should change it to be 2XL’s old frequency 918 AM. It would make it closer to ABC local radio / RN if that matters these days.

Perhaps it’s limited to the north by 2GF Grafton? 2CA may also similarly limited by the HPON in Brisbane.

918 is probably a better choice I reckon too. Only really has Charleville to the north west and is further away.

the problem is - you can’t just use frequencies willy nilly - it has the potential to cause interference to other services (esp on AM skywave). I don’t know the equations but 846 + 918 (or 918 + 1053) as eg. Where does those harmonics fall? (and no its not just addition). eg 96.9 + 100.1 = 98.5 - so we get IMD on 98.5Mhz. RF Burns would know - he could explain it better

Correct on both, when planning AM allocations, co-channel and adjacent above/below all limit the signal.

On the east coast, NZ, PNG and Pacific Islands also considered.

WA/NT, Asian countries are considered.

2CC on 1206 is limited by Bowral, Grafton, Moranbah and community radio in Brisbane and Adel off the top of my head. Perth has a 1206 too. ABA planning docs in that era where LAPs were reviewed is where I’ve gleaned information, from accompanying explanatory papers that mention the co and adjacent allocations and how they influence planning.

@dxer2_2000 makes good points and I look forward to @RFBurns’ contribution and anyone else to share engineering experience.

River 1467 keeps coming in and out, in and out. Technical problems it seems. Blank carrier remains when it’s going out. And the songs keep switching very fast too.

Edit: my audio sounds atrocious, but you’ll get the gist.

MW from NZ quite good tonight. Heard Newstalk ZB ID on 558- a first time catch. This is probably the ex Radio Sport tx at Invercargill.

Another mini road trip, this time just up to Port Macquarie… stopped in at Forster and did a bit of DXing at Cape Hawke Lookout as I had the lookout tower all to myself. I took the Teccy up with me and got these (peak) results, though I didn’t do a full scan.

91.5, 97.9, 99.5 ABC Coffs 27db. Didn’t check for 90.7 and 92 3
92.9 ABC Classic Sydney 17db. Sydney commercials the same.
98.7, 97.1, 96.3 ABCs Middle Brother 61db. Should have checked for 94.7 and 95.5.
100.3 2RE Forster 53db
100.7 and 102.3 Port Macquarie 44db
Newcastle ABCs 102.1 and 106.1 37db, commercials only just fractionally weaker at 36db.
104.7 2BOB Taree 49db
105.1 and 106.7 Kempsey 27db
107.3 Max FM Taree 54db

And the view…

@Radiohead- you should go up North Brother, probably the best DX site up that way. Surprisingly the overload from Middle Brother isn’t too bad.

what great view @Radiohead!

Thanks! Yes, I will give that a go too. I have been there before, but haven’t made any DX notes from it. I will this time, it’s on my way home, so Wed or Thurs.

The Lismore ABCs are usually pretty strong up on the ‘Bro and with any luck the Zeds will be in too.

Would love to go up there when intense tropo is predicted to Lord Howe Island. It’s about the only place you might have a shot at the very low powered tx on 100.1. I don’t think the coastal headlands would cut it; sea paths are greatly enhanced with a bit of elevation. New Caledonia, Norfolk Island and of course NZ tropo would also be possible.
