Lol translation we will continue to start the game traditional game of 2.30pm. Personally I think the game time shouldn’t change. There has been nothing wrong with it from my perspective.
I don’t understand why there should be a change. The only thing that had to change was the grand final draw of 2010 of St Kilda V Collingwood in which they had to replay the next week. They changed the rules to avoid that issue again. Fail to see why the time should change for grand final.
Channel 7 is keen on the change to an evening GF as they believe it would deliver them better ratings.
It is a little incongruous that we’ve got the majority of the season played at twilight or night (often including the rest of the finals series), yet the final game of the year stays at a timeslot that is hardly used.
This announcement has become a yearly tradition and it doesn’t need to be - it’s clear that for all the chat that the commission might be interested, when it comes to making the decision they err with staying at the traditional timeslot. Just lock it in, it will be at 2:30 for the next 10 years.
Wow Sydney are getting a flogging by Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval tonight! Port held the Swans to one goal in the first half, and led 86-9 at half time.
If the Swans do lose, and either Brisbane or Fremantle win tomorrow, the gap between the top two teams will be reduced to just two points.
FWIW, the Sydney Swans have not lost a match by over 100 points since round 10, 1998 - that’s the longest “drought” by any active team. Hawthorn and Collingwood have both not suffered century losses since 2005.
Shows you just how bad Hawthorn and Collingwood were in '05… And how good interstaters the Sydney Swans and West Coast Eagles were, going on to play and each win back-to-back GFs, in record fashion. We will never ever see an era like the mid-2000s again.
Hawthorn were in the first year of a long-term rebuild under Alastair Clarkson that year, and had finished 15th the previous season. Collingwood suffered a fall from grace, going from back-to-back runners-up to only finishing above Carlton on the ladder.
Fun fact: despite winning the premiership, the Sydney Swans had the third-weakest attack in the competition; even wooden spooners Carlton scored more points than them (2016 to 1974). They did, however, have the second-best defence in the competition.
Meanwhile at the MCG, Collingwood celebrated Scott Pendlebury’s 400th game with a three point win over Carlton. The Pies led by 25 points at three quarter time, before the Blues fought back with five goals to one in the final term, and had a shot after the final siren to win, but Mitch McGovern’s kick went out of bounds on the full.
It is the Sydney Swans’ heaviest defeat in a premiership match since 1998 (when they lost to St Kilda by 101 points at the SCG).
I believe Hawthorn now have the longest “drought” of having not lost a match by over 100 points since round 13, 2005 (a 117-point loss to Port Adelaide on a Friday night). Collingwood is next (110 point loss to the Adelaide Crows in round 21 that season). Both of these losses occurred at the since-demolished Football Park.
Port have really found some form again. They have beaten the Bulldogs, Carlton and Sydney in the last month. That Brisbane loss will always be in the back of my mind though. Still feel port need to win one more game to solidify top 8.
As I predicted last night, Brisbane is now two points behind Sydney on second place on the ladder, after thrashing St Kilda by 85 points this evening. The Lions are on a nine game winning streak, and destined for a top four finish.
