Also don’t forget they lost the 2022 Grand Final by 81 points, thus making for two Grand Final losses in three years by a combined margin of 141 points.
Geelong lost consecutive Grand Finals in 1994 and 1995 also by a combined margin of 141 points - lost to West Coast by 80 in the former year and to Carlton by 61 in the latter.
To be fair, while they did lose to Hawthorn by 63 points in 2014, the 2016 decider (lost to the Western Bulldogs by 22 points) was just a case of bad umpiring and bad luck with injuries.
Throw in GWS’ 2019 Grand Final loss (89 points vs Richmond) and the Sydney teams would’ve lost five Grand Finals by an average of 63 points. Ouch.
If this midweek competition reduces the length of the home and away season, I am all for it.
Supposed Tasmania Devils enter the AFL in 2028 as planned, that will make it a 19-team competition, allowing each team to play the other 18 teams once (nine home and nine away).
I don’t mind the in season competition idea. They need to change something. Considering half the competition is and was out of contention after round 14 you need to change something to keep people invested for longer. Crowds have been low and even FTA viewership has been down.
The wildcard round needs to come in next year at the very least. Last year was really exciting with so many clubs still vying for the final few spots but doesn’t occur often enough. If we still had 7,8,9 and 10 up for grabs we would still have about 12 clubs with something to really play for from Adelaide, Geelong, Hawthorn and the bulldogs to stay in the top 6. Fremantle, GWS, Gold Coast trying to sneak into the top 6 and Sydney - stkilda (on the ladder) trying to get that wildcard spot.
I wonder how they’d do it so it’s kind of meaningful? Would it run over say a month and each team plays 4 games each and the winner is determined based on the highest percentage?
Another idea is for this competition, they only play 2 quarters instead of 4, and you could run it as a tournament with multiple teams at the same venue on the same day and play 6 games with 6 teams playing two games each on that day and spread that around the country over 3 or 4 weekends. Have 12 teams play each weekend so 6 teams get a bye.
A Collingwood member who made a death threat against Carlton coach Michael Voss has been banned from all AFL and AFLW matches, as well as the MCG, for five years.
What a match between Gold Coast and Collingwood tonight.
The Suns held the Pies goalless until half way through the third quarter, before the ladder leader surged in the final term, scoring five goals in a row to get in front. The home side fought back with two goals and held on to win by six points.
If Collingwood can play that badly for a half and still manage to get back in front in the last quarter, that doesn’t diminish them in my eyes. Still absolutely the team to beat this year.
Of course, I am still absolutely hoping that this record remains in tact this season.
