AFL broadcast rights 2025-2031

Seven need to move away from the deal with Foxtel. They need to hold exclusive broadcast rights for each game they show.

Prediction 4 games on Seven / 4 games on Ten. 10 will most likely put two games on Paramount +.

you’re right but I only expect Stan and paramounts executives to just bid on the streaming rights to those Saturday to Sunday AFL Games and that’s it that Foxtel and Amazon tie up I mentioned once Fox retain the pay tv rights to all AFL Games that Amazon MAY simulcast some Saturday to Sunday AFL Games that Foxtel airs on Fox Footy I apologize I didn’t phrase last message correctly

Someone PM a mod when there’s another news update on this.

Until then. :lock:

The Age reporting that Ten and Paramount will bid for all nine games, splitting the games between Ten’s FTA channel and Paramount Plus for streaming.

Great news.

It says that the 10 games will work in a way similar to how 7 does it, with 3-4 games on 10 and the rest on Paramount+. It could REALLY turn up the heat on Friday and Saturday nights. It also says international rights could go to CBS and AFLW on 10 Bold.

Overall, I would prefer Nine/Stan Sport to get the rights, but having 10/Paramount AFL would still be good, better than a Seven/Foxtel and Amazon deal.

You can feel Foxtel sweating at this news. Big stuff.

I wonder what Paramount’s distribution plans to get into pubs would be though. They’d need to provide a satellite service right? They’d have to strike a deal with Optus or Sky?

The Paramount bid (10 and P+) is huge if confirmed.

Obviously delivery of matches to pubs and clubs (especially those in regional areas) will be crucial. I think it will be a mix of IP and satellite. Paramount will also have to offer discounts and/or packages to entice pubs and clubs to sign up.

Cmon guys, it would be a surprise if they didn’t want it. Doesn’t mean they will get it. Remember Cricket Australia didn’t want anything to do with them last time out.

What it means when you have the one company with all the rights is you can dictate what games are on FTA and pretty much dictate the whole fixture.

10 didn’t get the cricket rights because (in my view) CA desperately wanted Foxtel to come on board with the promise of no ads during live play, and personal interest got in the way of decision making.
(it is interesting to note that one of the people involved in the cricket rights negotiations, Ben Amarfio, is now CEO at AFL club North Melbourne)

Will be huge for 10 and P+ if they get it. They’re well placed to be contenders and their history with the sport suggests they should do it justice (also a good excuse to be rid of their awful soccer deal).

Nine are tied up with the NRL so they’re probably less interested whilst Seven are disadvantaged on the fact that they’re still stuck with Fox.

Out of curiosity, why?

I think it would be more to enhance their A-League deal, so they have something 52/365 on their platform as opposed to now where in a few weeks (late May/early June) they’ll have no sports properties at all until October.

Will be good. 10 were fantastic the last time they aired footy and were popular with fans during their heyday from 2002-11

If The Age’s reporting is correct, the AFL will be rubbing their hands in glee because they’ll have a bidding war on their hands with 10/Paramount+ wanting everything, Seven and Fox trying to maintain what they have and potentially other players getting involved too.

One of the major concerns though with Paramount+ being involved is their streaming infrastructure/experience (as A-League fans can attest to) is close to being a dumpster fire. Between streaming issues, no PVR functionality and a significant delay in replays being available, it’s just not a great user experience. If they do get full AFL rights and things don’t improve by 2025, there’s going to be a lot of complaints about it.
