And they used to be reasonably successful with news in the past as well, look where that got them…
10 going back to broadcast footy will be popular with fans
10 need AFL to restructure their complete schedule and become a competitor again.
My thoughts re the upcoming rights deal:
Right here right now, Ch7 needs Foxtel and Foxtel need CH7 for the cost spread so I agree the most plausible outcome will be an extension to the current deal with some minor tweaks. They will both be paying ‘OVERS’ though !
In terms of possible streaming platforms, us footy supporters do not want to see games spread over 2 or 3 different paid streaming platforms – I doubt the AFL (or NRL) would want that either but money talks and if players want more money, than this maybe what the future looks like
On a side note, thinking outside the box, if I was a strategist of the 3 FTA networks and in particular 9/stan & 10/P+, they have an opportunity to kill Foxtel. If the AFL and NRL rights get taken away from Foxtel, then Foxtel will cease to exist. Cricket and F1 won’t save Foxtel, so the FTA networks with their paid streaming offshoots have a unique opportunity to shake things up – would be a ballsy play but they could change the TV sports landscape for ever.
Doubt Foxtel cares who the FTA partner is as long as they either retain what they currently have or build upon it. The alternatives (ie; getting less games or being locked out altogether) would be problematic scenarios in their own different ways.
They should take F1, Olympics and Cricket away from Seven and Foxtel so:
Nine has NRL, Olympics, Tennis,
10 has A-League, AFL, F1, Supercars and Cricket
And Seven and Foxtel have nothing!
Seven have been airing the AFL/VFL pretty much non-stop since Australian TV’s earliest days, late 50s - 2001 and 2007 to present.
And agree, it’s ridiculously way too long.
And would you like one less network to exist in Australia?
I have plenty of problems with Seven’s sports coverage but then again I think they can do good aports coverage…with the right people. I don’t think they deserve nothing like the Nine and 10 fanboys seemingly want (and before anyone says anything, I might have a 7 in my name but there’s so much to write about the flaws of Seven’s AFL coverage that we need a whole new topic for it).
If Seven can bid for it financially then they will and should be included in the bidding. No reason to exclude them until someone wins the rights.
Sorry, it was just a joke
I know and I was exaggerating a bit as well. Realistically Seven will definitely be in contention, most likely with Fox but that’s a terrible outcome if Fox gets the lionshare again due to their financial capabities. Best scenarios would be:
Nine and Stan
10 and P+
Seven and Amazon Prime (hypothetically, they could work together even though it’s a slim chance)
9 and 10 probably won’t sign a deal with Foxtel because they have their own paid service in Stan and Paramount+ respectively, so in a sense Foxtel need channel 7
Most realistically I don’t see 9/Stan or 10/Paramount+ wanting to partner with Fox and Fox wanting to partner with them because they have their own paid streaming platform.
So I think Fox will only partner with 7.
I think 9 & 10 will most likely bid alone with their paid streaming being included. I don’t see 9 & 10 partnering
Alright so a quick couple of points here just looking at the Pay TV and streaming side of things here look for Stan’s executives. Along with paramount to bid very aggressively on the streaming rights to Saturday to Sunday afternoon AFL Games. But expect Fox to retain pay tv rights to all AFL Games however and I think this might be a possibility. That Fox and Amazon may do a tie up meaning team up where Amazon might simulcast some Games. That Foxtel will air on Fox Footy.
Oops I forgot to mention in the last part of that comment games that are exclusive to fox
If they do get them, then I assume 10 get the rest of the games. Paramount would NOT do a joint deal with Amazon and Foxtel, they would only do it with 10 who they own. Same with Nine/Stan.
Absolutely if 9/Stan or 10/P+ are going for rights there’s nothing simulcasts with foxtel and there’s no sharing of rights. Both those organizations Re in the record saying they only want full rights to everything.
If the AFL wants the huge pay day they’ll want to sell the rights with levels of exclusivity. More of the same isn’t going to cut it.
What?? Your post doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.
Ok what I meant by tie up is team up I forgot to mention that
and what I meant by the other comment is that paramount and Stan will only bid for those games in question
They won’t be bidding on separate games. It’s a full suite of rights or nothing at all. I think you have the various scenarios confused.
