Kevin should check his sources then as it appears Nine did meet today. Even 7 saying they did.
Imagine the branding outcomes for ch9. Both major sporting codes in NRL and AFL on the one networkđ
So the AFL is simply going for the highest monetary value?
it has happened before although I think nine did share with Ch10. I would like to see the rights go to paramount honestly and failing that nine though they would have to have a lot of resources financially and otherwise to manage AFL plus Tennis, NRL and Union
There have been warnings for sometime that the final number wonât be a dramatic increase on previous deals - the days of bidding really big are over.
10s last minute bid did fuck all⊠clearly itâs US owners are not serious. Why did they even bother?
Well, there was this point as stated above:
Paramountâs initial bid was not high enough but was asked for $600m per year and their final deal is now being finalised.
So maybe they may reconsider? It doesnât help though that it appears Paramount Global isnât considering of going higher than what is reported.
If paramount global were even remotely serious about this market they wouldâve bid 650m and got it over done with. Theyâre too conservative and donât understand what is at stake. Paramount and 10 will continue to remain minnows.
But fans of Lions/Suns/Swans/Giants may complain that if their team play on a Thursday or Friday night, those matches will never be shown on the main channel because the NRL takes priority (Nineâs NRL rights expire at the end of 2027, so if the network gets the AFL too, there will be a three season overlap).
There are also a few points to consider:
*does the new rights include AFLW? When does the AFLW rights deal with Seven and Foxtel expire? If the two parties lose the rights to menâs competition, will they be keen to renew the rights to womenâs competition, or just cede them to Nine/Stan without a fight?
*If Seven loses the FTA rights to menâs competition, will it also quit state competitions (VFL/SANFL/WAFL) altogether allowing Nine/Stan to pick them up for a small fee, thus putting the matches behind the paywall like Shute Shield (NSW) and Hospital Cup (QLD) rugby union competitions?
*How will Nine promote the AFL through its own radio stations 2GB and 4BC, as I am not sure if they own commercial radio rights to AFL in Sydney and Brisbane respectively?
Or they know exactly what is at stake and donât think its worth the asking price. There is a reason why they are a successful global company and it doesnât involve throwing 650m at a deal to get it âover and done withâ.
Letâs hope it doesnât end up like the last cricket rights where Seven was pushed to pay more that it should have and is now complaining about the quality of the competition and has taken the governing body to court.
Theyâll only have themselves to blame if they buckle to Nineâs bid and the deal with Foxtel turns pear shaped.
Iâm hoping for exactly this at the very least. It will teach sporting bodies not to go with 7/fox. Theyâre terrible media companies. Will serve them right for not innovating and moving on for a refresh.
Nine did not mention the deal at all today in Melbourne surprisingly.
It seems funny that TV Blackbox are essentially echoing The Australianâs article about the rights. I wonder who is Kevinâs source?
Donât know what to believe today lol
Please be wrong. Please be wrong. Please be wrong. Please be wrong. Please be wrong. Please be wrong. Please be wrong.
No no no no Nono.
I seriously donât get all the hate for 7 and Kayo. I hated when Nine had the coverage, Tenâs was far superior but I donât see that 7 has been as bad as everyone makes out. As Iâve said before I actually prefer their coverage for the cricket and the AFL over Foxtel/Kayo.
Some people just seem really biased for no real reason at all and to the point where theyâd rather see major companies go bust over things putting thousands of people out of work. Weird.
