AFL broadcast rights 2025-2031

Well that’s really impossible to tell as we don’t know the price a new TV partner will charge.

I think a decade is about as long as any FTA broadcaster can have a mainstream sport without a bit of staleness becoming apparent.

Seven are well past this in the AFL and 9 even more so with the NRL and both could do with a change.

Personally, Amazon buying a slot like Thursday Night Football is genuinely intriguing and a chance for real innovation. I don’t hold out much hope for that with any other broadcaster mentioned.

Hopefully, with that Amazon possibility excepted, the pay tv component is all in one place, wherever that is. I’d rather it remain wholly on Fox rather than split in some form between Fox/ P+/ Stan etc.

Do the Crows and Eagles (also Port and Freo to a lesser extent) end up getting covered like the Broncos on 9 in this situation?

Of course.

But there will be a minimum number the subscription provider will mandate. Maybe 6-8 exclusive matches out of 22 and one of the 2 derbies per year.

Why would anyone not be watching it in 4K Ultra HD on Foxtel?

People who don’t have Foxtel would come to mind here?

If Amazon and P+ are genuinely interested, I reckon the AFL can add the international rights to the negotiating table.
Isn’t AppleTV+'s current deal with Major League Baseball to broadcast one Friday night match for the entire world?

Why pay the extra money for Foxtel, when I have Kayo for $15 a month and HD does me fine.

It’s a weekly Friday night doubleheader in selected countries:

“Friday Night Baseball” will be available on Apple TV+ in the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, and will expand to additional countries at a later date.

Using the same analogy, Amazon or P+ can broadcast AFL match(es) in Australia as well as a number of overseas countries under a single contract.

Good to see the big guns at paramount able to put their case forward. They’re the third biggest media company in the world so surely the AFL would like to leverage some of that and what they can offer.

What can they offer in Australia though.
It’ll need to be a hell of a sales job from Paramount.

Streaming and free to air all in one place and some international coverage if they package that up as well. It’s a one stop shop.

I’d be asking for some guarantee that their streaming platform will be up to scratch (and widely available, like in pubs/clubs) too - the unresolved complaints from A-League fans about some of the more simple elements of the service should be of concern

I wonder what the Australian Professional Leagues have to say about their first year with Ten/P+

I do not reckon AFL will be on Paramount+ only, at least here in Australia. I expect 10 to also get rights if they do sign with Paramount.

Well of course. They’re the same parent company. It would be a joint deal.

You’d think this would be an entirely different proposition given the huge outlay that would be in the billions. There would be significant investment in the platform and the offering. It would make business sense to go down this road.

10 were very successful with the AFL in the past. They know what they’re doing in that space.

But this isn’t the same 10 as the 00’s.

Any sport would be crazy to sign on with them without seeing the detail of what this entails - especially in an environment where the vast majority of your content is going to be only accessible via this medium. P+ has a poor reputation across the board, that can’t be ignored.

None of the well vaunted international credentials seem to have had a significant impact on improving the situation for the A-League which still suffers from P+ having some fairly considerable platform issues.
