AFL broadcast rights 2025-2031

Correct. Seven’s pre and post coverage on match day is extensive. Not to mention the coverage footy gets on news and sunrise.

Kelli Underwood needs a lot more coaching and training. Some of her commentary is embarrassing to listen to. What was it the other week? Calling GWS as the orange team.

I just dont think Ten / Paramount should b3 biding on the afl. Ten is in a shit hole financially is it not ?

If Seven and afl allow some home games be broadcast live on the web on the FTA it would be a good thing for its qudience who stream more thrn watching FTA.

Wathing delayed gqmes is so 1980s.

Umm… Ten is owned by Paramount so I don’t think there are any worries about finances there… I would actually like to see Ten get the rights as sometimes there needs to be change and as someone who lives in Sydney Ch7 certainly doesn’t do much to promote the AFL. Here and we have 2 teams.

5 years late. They aren’t in a bad financial situation anymore.

Welcome back from 2017!

No… it’s in a very good position financially. Especially with its parent company Paramount backing the network.

Been out off the country too long.

It’s programming schedule doesn’t reflect that though. All cheap stuff. Looking forward to NCIS Sydney though. At least that should have some money thrown at it.

Their reality licensing fees would be huge for survivor, amazing race and bachelor. They’d have some quite expensive programming on the books.

Their cheapness comes from a lack of a news department.

Better than nothing, Seven cut ‘Talking Footy’ and ‘AFL Game Day’ from their line up during 2020 due to Covid, surely now if they were to require the rights, they’d put some more effort into programming. The Front Bar, as good as it is, doesn’t cut it for analysis of matches.

The network is now in a more healthier position than it was 2 years ago…. So I don’t see why this couldn’t be on the cards in the years ahead.

I love how people think paramount would be willing to throw an empty cheque book 10s way. I would have little doubt that their current budgets are smaller than the ones they had before the takeover.

There’s a reason why paramount is successful and it’s not because they spend endless amounts of money.

What does the guy mean by “there’s no games on Saturday”? 0:33
Mark McGowan suggesting games would become Pay-Per-View is fearmongering at it’s finest. 3:46
And calling VAFA (an essentially private league for those from private schools) grassroots is just funny.

He said no FTA games on Saturday. I think he’s referring to Fox wanting ‘Super Saturday’

He’s talking about the present.

“The fact that there’s no FTA games on a Saturday…”

It’s an absolute beat up is what it is. There will still be FTA footy nationally, and in WA and SA.

Small tidbits in there on the deal but nothing new. Negotiations still ongoing.

Good to see the government intervening to ensure free to air remains relevant. Would like to see the anti-siphoning rules strengthened to minimize the involvement of fox in deals.

Not in this way it isn’t, this just feels like potential overreach - if the Government is concerned, then bring the changes to the anti-siphoning list (and its operation) that they’ve made noise about to parliament and get it implemented.

Intervening in this way could be construed as a threat that if the AFL sign a deal that the Government doesn’t like (but is within the current rules) they may force it to change.

Of course you would - its time to stop this rent-seeking nonsense, if a sport wants to put its content completely behind the paywall (regardless of who it is) and have to face the consequences of doing so then let them.

Just on this, is it realistic to expect a new government to have genuinely consulted, reviewed and determined what exactly to change in the anti-siphoning list in the 3 months since the election?

If it is, and to me it’s clearly not, it can only be legislated on parliament sitting days which make the timeframe even shorter.

I think Rowland’s comments would have been better served being delivered behind closed doors (and perhaps they were), but it’s one of the only proactive levers she could’ve currently pulled to articulate the government’s concern.
