Wouldn’t have thought so. CEO of a club would possibly mean he wasn’t involved anymore and a potentially dead bid, but not president.
My money is on Seven/Foxtel. The AFL are just using Paramount to push the bid to higher price.
Who ever gets it, the FTA games will either stay the same or decrease. Don’t see it going to 4 even if Thursday is every round
I think it will be 3.
With the introduction of Thursday Nights, will we lose Saturday Nights or Sunday Afternoons?
I’m sure it will be Saturday nights that go.
Fox will be going hard for ‘Super Saturday’, and Seven prefer Sundays because of the lead-ins to the 6pm news and 7pm reality programming.
It has been speculated here that Foxtel wants all Saturday games. If that does happen, it would be most likely Seven would get all Thursday games, especially if they are becoming full time.
Hopefully Seven (or 10) can obtain four games on free to air… losing Saturday Night football could bite the AFL (in the arse) in the long run.
If there’s less free to air then it’s a disaster of a deal. The AFL are shooting themselves in the foot. Foxtel is old news. They need to move on and go for a one broadcaster deal. It’s better for the fans and the product.
We know that you are vehmently opposed to Foxtel, but to say that Foxtel are old news is totally false. They have a dedicated AFL channel producing multiple football shows and analysis each week with a great team of commentators and experts. We can’t live in a free-to-air world forever. We have to evolve, and IMO Kayo and Fox Footy provide content above and beyond the standard that Seven produce - it’s a win for the fans. Where are the football analysis and discussion shows on Seven?
We honestly can’t expect that Ten could do any better than Seven if they get the rights. What money will they have to spend on their coverage when they use it all on the bid if successful? Going forward, I think Foxtel with either Seven or Nine as the FTA partner is the best option.
I think you need to start accepting that streaming is the future and in roughly 10 years any decent content will only be found there - including premium sports.
FTA will only have cheap, repeat programming. Multi channels will close and content will merge into smaller channels.
If Seven can obtain the following package I think this will be a huge win for free to air, but I think it’s looking doubtful.
Four Live Games (per round) Thursday / Friday / Saturday /Sunday
Shared Streaming Rights for Seven’s Games (on 7+)
All Finals Football
Exclusive Grand Final Coverage
Except from a financial perspective I don’t think this is realistic. If Seven really wants the AFL they really have to show it and invest in more of it. And by that I don’t mean Hamish McLachlan being left right and centre.
Hence why 10/p+ And 9/Stan is better than any of the other prospects.
Here is another ideal package:
- All 198 H&A Matches produced by Seven and also simulcasted on Fox as well as on 7Mate and streamed on 7Plus and Kayo as well.
- Finals remain the same as current deal.
- Brownlow Medal Night simulcasted on Seven and Fox and also streamed on 7Plus and Kayo.
I don’t think there’s any chance Seven would be able to put up that kind of money to make that happen in this day and age.
0% chance sorry. NO chance of Seven getting all games.
Unfortunately, that’s never going to happen. Seven would go bankrupt… along with Nine or 10 as alternative free to air options… It’s just not financially viable in 2022.
We would most likely see the same set up as the Seven/Fox deal. 10/p+ And 9/Stan would most likely only broadcast 3 games on free to air. Everything else would be behind a streaming paywall.
You forgetting Kayo?

Owned by foxtel. Not interested. The less rights Murdoch owns the better.
