I think the current average of 3.5 games per week on FTA is too rigid. In the next broadcast deal, the average of 3.5 (or 2.5) games per week should be the minimum, not maximum, so all matches produced by Seven can be shown live on FTA nationwide.
I would love to see this happen.
it would be good to see Seven approaches it as having a certain number of games in every market across the season and could choose which ones to take (within reason) - if they want 4 games one weekend and 1 game the next, let them.
I couldnt see Seven or Foxtel agreeing to that though
My stabs on what 7/Fox might look like based on the above,
- Average 3 games a week nationally on Seven and streamed to 7+
- SA/WA team games shown on delay and on 7+ catch up, perhaps a select few live
- NSW/Qld games live, but blocked out on 7+
- Fox get their own commentary team
- Fox get to air the Grand Final but need to show Sevenâs post goal ads
Agree with the above but with one suggestion: Foxâs grand final broadcast with its own commentary cannot air until after Sevenâs live coverage finishes (similar to Fox Leagueâs coverage of NRL finals).
As much as Iâd love to see Seven get live streaming on 7+, I think itâs unlikely. News Corp and Murdoch will throw the chequebook at the AFL to ensure Kayo remains the provider of live streaming as Kayo would lose a significant portion of subscribers should 7+ get to show games live.
With 6 games still exclusively on Foxtel/Kayo I think theyâll be right.
7+ would only have the FTA matches produced by Seven, not the Foxtel games.
And in a time when so many people donât use an antenna for FTA anymore, it only seems fair for Seven to have their rights extended to 7+ for matches they produce.
These days that is the case, although going back to the late 2000s, Seven would replay their match at midnight here in Sydney, when the Swans match was broadcast on Sunday arvo (a Fox match).
Any chance of the deal just simply staying as is, mostly unchanged since 2012 and really for the past 20 years now?
I donât think Seven are wanting their games âexclusivelyâ on their streaming platform, but are requesting to have the capability to stream them on 7+. I would say Kayo would still be streaming all games.
Exactly - like 9now and Fox/Kayo do with the free to air NRL games
My Prediction for Free to Air Component for 71 Home and Away Matches on Ch 7.
South Australian and Western Australian teams minimum 13 out 42 Matches broadcast in each market including Showdownâs and Derbyâs. A further 8 Matches broadcast in each market on Sunday Twilight will be a Simulcast of a Foxtel Production.
All Finals, Grand Final & Brownlow Medal as per current arrangements.

very suss
Hmm very interesting. 10 are back in the race it seems
What pushed the 10/Paramount bid over the line? A giant cake.
Good PR job 10!
Their bid was actually just the cake.
Andy Maher believes Paramount, owners of the CBS Network in the United States, have rolled out the NFL big guns in order to impress the AFL.
âThe industry scuttlebutt for what itâs worth is this ⌠and it could be wrong,â Maher said on SENâs The Run Home.
âAnd do you know who they had as part of their pitch, their video pitch that was put to the AFL? Jim Nantz and Tony Romo were part of the video pitch ⌠âHi everyone over there in Australia. This is what we bring as a television sports broadcasting firmâ.â
A tad more info provided by Andy Maher, a video pitch was put together by Paramount for the AFL, which featured Jim Nantz and Tony Romo of CBS Sports.
Edit: I see I was out-posted lol:
I also this article from May.
The battle over AFL rights has taken a new turn, with sources claiming that AFL boss Gillon McLachlan, who spent last week courting Channel Ten owners in New York, telling CBS Viacom executives that the AFL is set to take over production of all games.
McLachlan has told interested parties that the move to take production of games in house was one of the reasons why rights negotiations for the 2025 season have been moved up.
