ACE Radio (Regional)

Good news, hopefully the other ones will follow soon.

I’ll be interested to hear how the Wodonga ones go.

I’m guessing this page

which contains this section of text below hasn’t been updated in a long while, unless the frequency of 90.5MHz refers to a Edge FM transmission I’m not aware of.

General Enquiries

102.1, 90.5 & 93.3 EDGE FM was born in October 1996 and reaches on average over 11,000 motor vehicles per day traveling along the Hume Highway.

According to the ACMA’s current Radio & Television Broadcasting Stations (internet edition), 90.5 is 8SAT (Flow FM) on Mt Buller. However, in the past (e.g. in the 2008 edition) Mt Buller had relays of both Shepparton commercial FM stations and in the July 2013 to May 2015 editions (and possibly others), they had both.

I’m not aware of any Edge translator on 90.5. Certainly none are licenced. I’d guess they copied the paragraph from another station, missed changing the bit and it’s never been reviewed.

The Shepparton repeaters for Hit and Triple M are now located at Maindample. I’d guess they still cover Mt Buller, but there’s no local content for Mt Buller now like there once was on Sun FM.

90.5 was never a permanent repeater for Edge, but part of a scientific trial for emergency ‘break-in’ technology in 2013. Transmitter was at Eldorado.

Being granted a ‘scientific licence’ to conduct the demonstration by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), it meant we had to create our own dummy radio station, which transmitted on 90.5FM. However, Wangaratta radio station EDGE FM and the ABC Rural have been very supportive of the trial and EDGE FM even allowed 90.5 to rebroadcast their signal to ensure our station sounded just like a real radio broadcaster.

I think I recall reading in the winter, 93.7 operated at Mt Buller but in the summer it was switched over to Mansfield.

Quoting a post I made in 2018, that’s some next level MediaSpy work!

It’s an interesting exercise though, looking at old posts. A lot of our discussions are essentially circular, with a lot of questions being asked several times and the same information being relayed multiple times. I’ve been guilty of that as much as anyone though…I posted the same thing about 105.5 Coffs Harbour’s test transmissions several years ago.

But it’s still good to reinforce, rediscover or even reminisce, as some older members like me might forget! Or not remember… I’ve forgotten which.

Surprisingly enough, despite the 92.7 FM frequency in Lorne being off-air and Ace Radio launching a new brand identity, they still list the 92.7 FM frequency for Lorne on their website.

And yes, the whole website got a refresh, but they forgot to take off the 92.7 FM bit from their frequency list on Mixx FM in the Colac page?

Imagine if ace could get a FM licence in Melbourne? Magic 1278 would be an ideal station to convert to a Star :star:

Well to be fair they could rebrand now and become Star 1278/DAB+

Melbourne market is a bit more competitive than Wangaratta though.

Or Star Digital & 1278 AM.

Actually in Melbourne they have both Magic 1278 & 3MP. Could they change the format and rebrand 3MP as MIXX Digital or Edge Digital (&1377 AM)?

Sure they could, but they won’t. Melbourne is a far more competitive market than Wangaratta and doesn’t need another CHR (ala Edge) or AC (ala Star) station.

I think 3MP and Magic are programmed and branded just fine for Melbourne.

I agree with Melbourne doesn’t need another CHR. Melbourne is already saturated with CHR stations and as for Star, I think that AC format probably would work in Melbourne. It has a point of difference to the other AC stations and would take some listeners away from Smooth, Gold and some of the older listeners from the CHR stations.

Star would be a bad idea for Melbourne.

If anything, Melbourne could do with a stronger talk station take on 3AW. Even if it might not be a success, it could be a disruptor so long as they stay committed.

More and more people are switching off radio to go to other platforms. AM radio (especially music based) is going to die a natural death. The age demographic for Magic and MP are also aging. ACE obviously saw the writing on the wall with 3NE and made a good choice in my opinion. I believe if a music station is going to survive they need a point of difference and either be committed to music. Hence why Smooth & Gold rate well. Triple M you never know what your going by get and most of the time it’s talk now. Music is really only 9:00 to 14:00. If you want music on you might as well go to Spotify now days. Star have a great mix or variety from 80s to now, would love to see it in Melbourne but doubtful :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

1566 is off the air. Went off some time around 11:30pm.

Managed to capture audio of the final hour or so (not great quality as reception here isn’t great but still better than nothing), will upload tomorrow sometime.
