ACE Radio (Regional)

They probably could have gotten translators for Edge at all those new 3NE sites eg. Yarrawonga, Wodonga etc too if they wanted them?

From what it looks like on Star website they are practically blowing up 3NE and starting a a total fresh, dropping all network programming from the 2AY breakfast show, from 3AW morning and evening talkback to Ace radio produced stuff like Country Today, Sunday Country, Classic Hits Countdown, ect. I wonder if 3NE/Star will be advertising 1494 2AY to show locals where they can find the 3AW talkback

I am surprised to see Wayne “Flowman” Phillips writing in complaining about ACE getting special treatment but no Albury stations complaining about 3NE/Star starting up on 93.7 in Wodonga

Is it the same playlist they stream online on stations that take AFL

Albury is 2/3rds SCA, who already sell national advertising on behalf of Ace (and Ace stations are on LiSTNR etc.)

The other third are Ace themselves… and since getting a 2AY conversion would effectively give them three FM stations in the one licence area (Edge/Star/2AY), I can’t see them complaining.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the new format is received by listeners (especially once they realise that this actually isn’t a ‘new’ station but the end of 3NE.
I just hope they don’t try and skew too young as that market is already served by Edge and Hit. Ideally 70s to 90s would be the core focus.

Don’t think so, I’ve just tuned in to check against the streaming playlist and it’s completely different to that.

Turns out it’s the exact same set of songs in the same sequence that I heard in the car a couple of hours earlier. Suspect it’s just a playlist on a continuous loop of either 1 or 2 hours at the moment (interspersed with the test transmission messages). I’ll check back in at 6:22pm to see if I get Rick Astley again. :stuck_out_tongue: (edit: the playlist loop seems to be about 1 hr 3 mins in total)

That was quite an interesting submission- I do think he’s got a good point (and can see how he would feel he’s gotten the short end of the stick a bit). Mind you even if Flow’s signal did make it into places like Albury I don’t think they’d be much of a threat to the incumbents given their rather eclectic format (for lack of a better term).

Extra choice is always a good thing though in my view so I’m happy if it ends up being a de facto 4th/5th commercial radio option here.

I know this is a factor, but I assumed another one was frequency selection - without a fairly wide ranging reshuffle, lots of these conversion markets don’t really have amazing options for a high power service on the same spec as the original FM.

I’m sure it was discussed that it was to limit overspill in one of the explanatory papers for the conversion. The same with some other conversions - 2ST comes to mind - the AM conversion runs on lower specs than the existing FM.

And is also at a different site.

2BS Bathurst is another that has different specs to B-Rock but is at the same site.

Interesting that 3NE celebrated 70 years earlier this year and now will be dead and buried. But I get am radio is living beyond its years. Star fm will be great if they get the music mix right. Matt Hobbs and Karen Pratter will be great talents. Hopefully they keep it local and has potential of being a great station. Do music from 70s to now and will be on a winner

Going by their Facebook page, they are going to play a bit of Adele and Ed Sheeran.

I could be wrong, but I believe this will be the format. A female skewed music format from the 70’s to now. The same as the old Edge FM.

As long as they mix it up with some chisel and AC/DC that’s ok. I believe variety is the key

The old Edge FM music log was a train wreck.

Best bet for them is to copy the Smooth FM format song for song.

Yes I rememberer that. It was not very popular in Deni.

ACE radio has posted that on the 3ne site. Nothing about star 92.1fm though

I agree, the obsession with limiting overspill is just over the top. And it smacks of a regulator that has been captured by the incumbents of the industry it’s supposed to regulate. I much preferred their approach in the 70s whereby overspill was ignored provided they adequately served their licence area (eg. 4IP).

When an industry is under pressure from platforms that are global, obsessively trying to prevent terrestrial overspill is a complete joke. And is actually counterproductive in protecting the industry in the long term. The fewer choices listeners have on terrestrial broadcasts, the MORE LIKELY they are to stream global content or Spotify. Allowing more choice on terrestrial radio actually protects the industry as a whole.

Can’t say I’m overly enthused by the names they’ve teased as having their songs featured (Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, Adele).

Skews a bit too young for my liking and for what the gap in the market is.

3NE’s current music format is probably considered “too old” for FM but there is a happy medium to be found.

Looks like Ace techs fired up the RDS this afternoon -

PS: Star FM

RT: Star FM, Coming Monday….
RT: Thursday - Partly Cloudy. Cool. 12

I must say, a little nostalgic seeing that flash up driving through the Shepparton CBD (where I still occasionally hear locals refer to 96.9 as their former name).

I think Ace Radio is doing a bad job telling the audience who listen to 3ne about the conversion about star 91.5fm

Does not make any mention about star 92.5 whcih starts this Sunday

They need to make a news artcile about 3ne beoming star 92.5fm on 3ne site

3NE has been limping along since Paul Konik left. It’s no loss.

Sun FM rocks hot!
