ACE Radio (Regional)

Any idea on a conversion date? I see that it’s all been allocated on the ACMA database.

Mmm…perfect description.
I’m left unmoved & uninspired by the new Star 92.1 logo :face_with_diagonal_mouth:
What’s the significance of the dot after the ‘r’ in Star?
One usually associates the label of ‘Star’ as something bright & vibrant which the logo isn’t.
And finally surely of all the possible station names out there why recycle the Star name?
I know it’s easy to be mildly critical, but just thinking some more thought could have been applied.
The Mixx/Edge & heritage station ACE logos still look fresh, would be disappointing to see most of the stations adopting the new coffee cup stain logo in place which I’d probably think would perhaps be more suitable for a chilled/relaxed program format radio station.

The new logo is probably just part of their FM conversion marketing strategy so I suspect they won’t roll out the logo network wide just yet.

There’s a number of other FM conversions potentially happening across the network including Gold 1242, so their strategy is to market these new converted FM stations well so they can try to gain existing FM-only listeners who probably didn’t even know the station existed already on AM!

The Star name would also work for Gold 1242 in Gippsland where the current Triple M Gippsland was previously Star FM about 9-10 years ago. They could re-gain some listeners from the previous Star FM Gippsland station that are now a bit older.

The Star logo should feature a star. Not a circle.

I know I’m old skool but how good would be it if they called in SUN :sun: fm. It should beam into the Goulburn Valley. The once iconic 96.9

Depends if SCA still own the trademark.

I’m really not sure the Sun name would (or even could) be trademarked, especially if they’re not using it and haven’t in years. Let’s face it, we have Star FM stations owned by 3 different operators in Australia now. And actually SCA was the one who bought the old Star FMs from DMG so you’d think if that was a problem it would have come up with the Star name as well.

And there are at least a couple of community Star FMs as well (Inverell NSW and St Helens TAS).

My only concern with ACE’s new Star92.1 is that it overlaps part of the market who’d recall DMG/SCA’s previous StarFM (now Hit).

It’s like if 2DayFM rebranded to Mix104.1… surely some listeners would be a little confused at this … It hasn’t been that long.

I don’t think it’s that big an issue.

Triple M in Adelaide used to be a community station, until Hoyts bought the callsign/ID from them and rebranded their KAFM as Triple M. The community station changed to 5DDD (3D Radio).

But why would they be confused? As I mentioned it’s probably even a strategy by ACE to get some of those older listeners who remember Star from the old days as a hit music station. They’ve aged and would now be looking for an older skewing station. Having fond memories of the old Star will actually attract them to the new Star, as it will be presumably be playing a lot of similar music to what they remember on the old Star. Many listeners will probably just think “Oh great, Star FM is back!”.

Goes to air Monday 30th June.

Great news and timing! As I’ll be passing through the area in the 1st week of July, so will definitely give it a listen and see what the coverage is like compared to Edge (assuming 102.1 is still at Mt Stanley, though it’s supposed to be moving to the new Star site at some point).

In the final LAP vararion, Edge/3NNN isn’t moving after all.

There’s an amusingly frantic email from the Ace crew in the public submissions about this - see the link at the bottom.

So why has 3NE decided to place the tx at Mount Warby? Are they not happy with the coverage from Mt Stanley?

It seems odd to not co-locate the stations.

Why have 3NE chosen to create a totally new Facebook page rather than just change the name of their current one?

I recall someone saying somewhere that it’s extremely difficult to get Facebook admin to change it (apparently you can’t do it yourself) - unless you are a big business.

Test transmissions seem to be on the air this afternoon on 92.1 - was playing Rick Astley “Never Gonna Give You Up”.

First time I’ve ever been rickrolled by a test transmission I must say

So odd indeed. Supposedly the same license area for both Edge and Star but they have completely different main transmitter sites. The translator sites are very inconsistent too.

The only thing I can think of is that the specs on Mt Stanley for Edge FM wouldn’t be approved these days as there is big overspill into neighboring licence areas.

There is an obsession it seems these days with trying to avoid overspill on the part of ACMA and CRA when planning these AM-FM conversions, regardless of the specs of the existing FM sister stations. Seems they would prefer poorer coverage within the licence area and a heap of translators on the fringes over stronger coverage from one transmitter with a bit of overspill. I call it inefficient and a waste of spectrum.

Driving around Albury this afternoon listening to the 92.1 test transmission (seems to be mostly 80s they are playing so far)- the signal is just about strong enough to be considered reliable while driving (a bit of fluttering interference here and there). In home however most people would struggle except on high quality equipment (even my TEF was struggling indoors with the signal and I’ve got good line of sight in that direction).

Will be interesting to see how the 93.7 Wodonga translator fares coverage wise once it is up and running.

From my observations today, I can totally understand the panic at Ace Radio when the original consultation paper came out, having Edge co-located at Warby Ranges without the benefit of a heap of fringe translators like 3NE is getting would have been a massive downgrade for them in terms of coverage area.
