ACE Radio (Regional)

In WA, outside the Southwest, there are only 3 voices. In fact in Albany, the number of voices has dropped from 5 to 3. The Great Southern Weekender wound up and GWN7 and the Albany Advertiser newspaper are now under the same ownership.

Previous voices.

Radio - SCA
Television - Prime
Television - WIN
Newspaper - Great Southern Weekender
Newspaper - SevenWest

Current voices

Radio - SCA
Television - SevenWest
Television - WIN
Newspaper - SevenWest

Of course I left out the JV Ten as it is owned by aforementioned companies.

NB: Gold MX left out as they are an S39 licence and don’t participate in audience surveys.

Without reading the whole document…are newspapers counted in the voices rules?? Thought it was just electronic media…

Just those that are published at least 4 days a week.

Here’s the Associated Newspaper Register list, which lists those that are counted towards the number of media voices in a commercial radio licence area: https://www.acma.gov.au/sites/default/files/2021-07/Associated%20Newpaper%20Register.pdf

And does not include freebie newspapers; defined as less than half of the circulation being actually “sold”. (The Associated Newspaper Register quote of that definition leaves out a big “not” in that part of the definition… :grimacing:).

So in the case of @Bergoine’s example, neither of the newspapers (Albany Advertiser is only two days a week) wouldn’t have counted as a point anyway - and is also probably why 7W didn’t face issues in acquiring GWN there, as it wouldn’t have been a trigger event for testing that 4 voices rule.

With Hit Network shows starting on Ace’s FM network next week, Edge Wangaratta goes back to a music shift for drive.

so looking at ace radio’s regional website: TR Fm (Traralgon, Latrobe valley and east Gippsland) Mixx FM ( Swan hill, Horsham, Hamilton, Colac and coast FM (Warrnambool) from Monday, Jan 16th :
**the Carrie & Tommy Drive show from 3 pm to 6 pm weeknights
2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin catch up show from 6-7pm , Weeknights
Hot Nights with Abbie Chatfield from 7-9pm , weeknights

Jimmy and Nath from 9-11pm, Weeknights

expect the Hughesy, ed, and Erin catch-up show, it will all be live hit programming

This is brilliant. Well done and I wish more regionals would have local drive 3-7pm.

Agree, look at how smooth and gold rate in drive. People flick to Spotify if there is too much talk. Then again thinking about it if ACE are taking SCA programs EDGE Wang would clash with Hit Border and GV. Deni will be interesting

Edge Deni is also not taking SCA programs. Remains to be seen if drive is hosted based on their website.

They do have a new daytime announcer starting:

We should all pray (or whatever floats your boat) for Josh Nelson, seems a nice bloke who will probably be terribly taken advantage of in his first radio job at Ace Deni.

I know we have a few people here who have survived, moved on and thrived beyond Ace Deni.

We can only wish the same for Josh, and the tip to keep emailing job applications as if you’re in need of a job (because you are Josh).

Edge Deni wouldnt be taking SCA shows due to the overlap in Echuca with Hit Bendigo

And Edge Wangaratta has overlap with Hit Shepparton and Albury/Wodonga I’m guessing?

TRFM is lucky that Hit Gippsland flipped to Triple M 3 years ago, otherwise they’d be in a similar predicament.

I’m sure TR’s listener’s would prefer music and 1 announcer for drive instead of 4 hours or dribble and 5 songs an hour

looks like edge Wangaratta does have an overlap with Hit Shepparton and hit the border( Albury /Wodonga)

Gave both Edge drives a listen this arvo. Tyson 15:00 to 19:00 on Wangaratta. Sounded very local and AJ was on Deni till 18:00 also sounding very local. Music was 80s to now Music that makes you feel good. Not sure what’s on at night yet. Great to hear a regional station doing this in drive like old days and a music based local drive show

I’m very much looking forward to the next local survey for these markets.

To me it’s a no brainer. So many people are drifting to Spotify because they can get pure music. That’s what radio use to be

I just had a look at Lava, except for midday to 1pm, they don’t play any music older then 2010. The music looks very SCA Hit FM. Since Hit and Triple M booms into Deni and Wang, I would of thought they would of differ the music a bit.

I guess they have there am brands on 2QN & 3NE that are classic hits. You really appreciate the old FM 102.5 now days. Remember they would share breakfast announcers to drive

Len Johns in doing afternoons on both 3SH & 2QN. Same songs same announcer, I certainly do miss variety that the Deni stations use to give us
