I agree about Smooth. They are so robotic it might as well be voice tracked.
I occasionally listen to Smooth in the UK, and Greatest Hits Radio and Magic there. Even though their announcers are very low key they manage to project some warmth and not sound so robotic. The early breakfast guy on Magic is particularly good at being engaging yet low key.
Yeah to be honest I’d rather listen to 2UE than Smooth without voice tracking for most of the day. I must confess though I never listened to smooth breakfast (it might be great) and also given it rates ok why change also? Although as a radio nerd it would be great all stations had live announcers but that isn’t realistic for music radio.
I have listened to 2CA/2GN etc and that it would be great to have a similar approach for the new 2UE in the new year.
Yet to hear if Matty is kept on, folded into the new venture.
Remember that Graham Mott is advising Ace re 3MP and he was the boss of these music stations prior to ‘retiring’ in the Fairfax era, around 2012. So he knows all about them and I’m sure with a handshake and more cash, he will expand his role to facilitate this.
Spot on @Brianc68, the Smooth liners are prepared in advance by programming staff, a Peter Clay style person there for the on air talent.
Down to the topics for the throws in/out of newsreaders.
It’s why I’ve never been impressed with Nova’s implementation of the Smooth concept.
Looks like 2AY in Albury will have as of tomorrow have both the mayors of Albury (Kylie King assuming she is voted in tonight) and Wodonga (Kev Poulton) as co-hosts on the breakfast program.
I know there’s been cases of one mayor or councillor hosting a radio program, but would this be the first case where both co-hosts of a program are councillors/mayors (and in different jurisdictions no less)?
Given all the successful comments for Ace’s new baby boomers network, does anyone have an update on the other Ace stations Edge and what was Classic Rock?
Are they still a mess with music all over the place? If so, amazing that such a network could create such a listenable set of stations at the same time.
