it is because the afl doesnt allow the games to be streamed and iam guessing it would cost to much to get two streams and i would guess ace and the like wouldnt allow it anways
In doing so they wouldn’t be simulcasting the terrestrial broadcast and would be required to pay music royalties at the higher ‘internet stream’ rate.
The other work around would be to simulcast another station, perhaps 3MP? As an example, Triple M’s online streams generally point to Triple M 90s or Classic Rock during AFL coverage.
what is edge fm supposed 2 be??? i know its part of ace radio but is it under a differnt umberalla??? i heard it for the 1st time over the weekend in echuca and it sounded awful. the only good show was the random 30 which i listen to here in ballarat on power fm . edge fm isnt that good and neither is hit fm from sheparton. i fell sorry for people in the broadcasting area of edge fm
Brief history is Edge/2QN/3NE were acquired from North East Broadcasters. The assimilation into Ace Radio for all 4 stations has been less than impressive.
Nope - almost all of the ACE ‘hit music’/FM stations share the same music format, same music log, and same networked breakfast show (Mixx FM Colac is the exception to the rule I’m fairly sure).
I Find the Northern Victoria and Southern Riverina area in Radio is boring as I live in the Area.
You have two LAP in Shepparton and Deniliquin that have Commercial radio station own by the one company. I still think Deniliquin LAP should extend the range in the Greater Shepparton Area as it will provide competition to SCA Triple M and Hit FM.
I still even see the Ace Radio sales car in Shepparton very often.
I was up in Deniliquin Today for a drive and I surprise that ACE Radio is spending money on 2 Radio Antenna site within less that 5km of each other. One had a hill or slight rise on the Southern side of it (I thought that was was the 2QN tower and the other one on top of the hill which was a Higher Tower and I think that is Edge FM but not sure).
i felt the same when i was at kotupna . i was staying at a camping , caravan park there . it can both recieve edge fm echuca and hit and triple m sheparton. both boring as hell radio stations
I obviously don’t live in either market, but everything I’ve heard over the past few years would suggest that 2QN/3NE and Edge FM aren’t particularly interesting or exciting radio stations?
Sure it’s good the commercial radio stations in Deniliquin and Wangaratta aren’t owned by SCA, but that isn’t saying much!
Given Shepparton has 3 licensed radio stations (albeit 3SR is used as a relay of RSN927), I suspect a merger of LAPs is unlikely, as that would lead to a 5 station market (which would be more appropriate for Gold Coast and Canberra).
I suspect Deniliquin is hardly a rivers of gold market place for a radio station (at 8,000 people). As I understand, in the 1940s the owners of 2QN wanted to relocate the station to Wangaratta (3NE was licensed in the 1950s), indicating it’s always been tough. So I am not surprised with the bare bones approach.
With Echuca already in the LAP and I believe the only other major town in the LAP at 15,000 people, I would probably relocate and focus the stations there (Gold 1521? to avoid state bias perceptions of having a 3xx name, based on ACE’s Gippsland station), although I note that Echuca is also included in both the Bendigo and Shepparton LAPs (so in theory a lot of stations, but probably a bit “who cares” from an SCA perspective!) Not sure this would “solve” the music given pretty much every playlist apart from 3MP is set at a network level by ACE, but hey more profit in theory leads to more local content.
I had always thought that 2QN and Edge FM were at the same site on the Cobb Hwy about 15km south of Deniliquin, which would make sense to give coverage to both Deni and Echuca.
It’s very flat around there, there aren’t any real hills to put a TX on to help with FM coverage.
I’m from Melbourne. Back in the day (20 years ago) I used to love heading up the Murray and listening to all the radio choices which back them was fantastic. My favourite was Sun FM (now hit). FM102.5 (Now Edge) always had a great playlist and SRFM (Now Triple M) was also a good listen.
102.5 used to have its own breakfast till 10:00. Then Edge Wangaratta and 102.5 would share the same announcer (voice tracking) between 10:00 to 14:00, then there breakfast announcers would do drive on the opposing station.
Sun FM was fantastic, live announcers in all shifts including nights and a playlist that left Melbourne stations for dead. Announcers Vinnie Shannon, Brendan Barnes, Daniel Gunn, Dave Williams. Memories
Well 2QN is at 99m ASL at 107m Tower (206m total) while Edge is 104m ASL and 137m Tower(241m Total). The 2QN tower is being blocked by the Hill or Rise that Edge FM tower is on. Google Maps does not give the rise justice
That the Thing. FM coverage is really good with the EDGE. I was listening to it all the way home(Tatura 20km West of Shepparton) and had no flutter at all in the car.
Well Finley and Berrigan share the Shepparton RA1 and Deniliquin RA1.
I think the Deniliquin Should include Shepparton, Numurkah (Pretty much a Triangle from Cobram to Shepparton to Echuca and anything in that should be included.
