The Space Shuttle That Fell To Earth

Monday 11 November 8.30pm

In 2003, Space Shuttle Columbia breaks apart in the skies above America. Astronauts’ families and NASA staff share personal stories of the launch, unfolding disaster and fallout.

This three-part series combines first-hand testimony alongside previously unseen archive footage to chart the in-depth story of the Columbia space shuttle tragedy. Those people who lived through it all – the astronauts’ wives, husbands and children and the staff at NASA, some of whom have never spoken before - reveal in unprecedented detail, how and why the disaster happened.

At the heart of this story are the seven astronauts. Extensive self-shot video footage taken during preparation for the 16-day mission and filmed whilst the astronauts are in space - including tape miraculously rescued from the shuttle debris - bring to life an era that seemed to herald a routine human presence in space.

This series tells the story of one of America’s most iconic institutions, examining the collective decisions made at NASA before Columbia’s launch, during the mission and after the disaster.

Space travel pushes the very limits of human endeavour and in the wake of the tragedy, the series pulls into sharp focus the inherent risks and rewards of human space flight.

Episode 1

As NASA prepares Space Shuttle Columbia for its 28th mission, excitement and trepidation build amongst the astronauts and their families as they count down to launch. We hear from the seven astronauts - a mixture of veterans and rookies - and their families, as they train for an awe-inspiring journey of a lifetime. During preparations for the mission, NASA grounds its entire shuttle fleet when cracks are found in the fuel lines. It is a nerve-wracking time for the families, bringing back memories of the Challenger disaster in 1986, and the risks versus the rewards of human space travel.

As the new launch date approaches, there are mounting concerns about a terrorist threat to the shuttle in the wake of 9/11. When the big day - January 16th, 2003 - eventually dawns, the crew go through their final preparations and crowds gather for the launch. As Columbia roars into orbit with a perfect launch, Mission Control and the astronaut crew breathe a collective sigh of relief. But footage taken just over a minute into launch, reveals a piece of debris breaking off and hitting the orbiter. How serious a problem is this going to be?

The Space Shuttle That Fell To Earth

Episode 2

Monday 18 November 8.30pm

NASA engineers analyse film footage of a piece of debris striking the shuttle Columbia 81 seconds after launch. The images show foam hitting the left wing of the shuttle. What no-one yet knows is whether the lightweight material has caused any serious damage to the vehicle or the tiles which protect the vehicle against the intense heat of re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. Engineers and managers debate how they can best assess the impact of the foam strike. But calls for photographs to be taken of the shuttle using satellites go unheeded.

A debris analysis team is formed and they conclude that the foam strike does not represent a safety risk to the mission. In space, the crew continue their mission unaware of any concerns inside NASA. Their 16 day orbit is filled with science experiments and emotional video conferences with their families.

On February 1st, 2003, Columbia re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere. Everything is going according to plan but then shortly before the shuttle is due to land, technical anomalies start being reported in Mission Control. When a live television report broadcasts debris falling from the sky, everyone in Mission Control fears the worst.

Solar System with Brian Cox

Tuesday 19 November 8.50pm

Today over 40 spacecraft are exploring the Solar System, allowing us to see what’s happening on the surface of our sister worlds in astonishing new detail. They’ve glimpsed lightning storms that rage across Jupiter, ice mountains that tower over Pluto’s surface and giant dust devils on Mars.

Getting to know the eclectic and diverse worlds of our Solar System will transform how you understand your place in the universe.

In tonight’s episode, join Professor Brian Cox on a journey to the volcano worlds of our solar system and explore alien landscapes bursting with fire and ice. See planets and moons covered in volcanoes, with eruptions so violent they reach into space. Understanding what makes these worlds active is critical in the search for life beyond Earth.

Shetland Series 8, Episode 3

Friday 22 November 8.30pm

Tosh is surprised to see Calder at her morning briefing, but welcomes the support on an increasingly sinister case.

A strange votive offering at the crime scene takes them to the house of Tom Knox, a nervous and reclusive figure whose family have a longstanding feud with the Bains. Tom is a little too guarded on his relationship with Ellen.

Sandy visits a mental health facility where Ellen briefly stayed before moving to London. She was admitted by her cousin Heather and looked after by Dr Azir Sadat. Both blame Ellen’s breakdown on her hard partying lifestyle, but there is something beneath the surface of Heather and Azir’s relationship.

Calder confronts Amma about the cigarettes, but she denies any connection to Ellen. Calder remains unconvinced and has her London team run a background check, keeping it secret from Tosh.

The team wake to a call from the mortuary and a horrifying development in the case. By the time they’ve identified Tom Knox as the main suspect, the news is out and they must race to find him. In the interview room, Tom is horrified by the accusation and comes clean about his relationship with Ellen.

The team are back to square one and the clock is ticking. Sandy recognises someone on the hospital CCTV. A resident who lives near to the crime scene with a previous conviction for animal cruelty.

Tosh and Calder race to a remote, eerie croft to find it empty, before a fire on the distant hillside reveals the horror of the situation.

A rattled and exhausted Calder returns to the hotel to find an unwelcome figure from her childhood waiting with a shocking announcement, as the past and present collide.

The Space Shuttle That Fell to Earth Episode 3 Final

Monday 25 November 8.30pm

Sixteen minutes from landing, Mission Control lose contact with the crew of Columbia. On the shuttle landing strip, families waiting to welcome their loved ones back home are swiftly ushered away. In the skies over Texas, locals hear a loud explosion and debris strikes the ground in multiple locations. The fears of some NASA engineers are coming true. Columbia is lost and there are no survivors.

Following the disaster, NASA comes under increasing pressure from the media to provide answers. During the investigation that follows, managers make the case that foam damaging the heat protection tiles was not considered to be a threat to the shuttle or the crew. But when a test shows that foam moving at high speed can puncture the heat protection system, NASA faces criticism for its flawed safety culture and management failures. And as astronauts’ families remember their loved ones, the future of the entire shuttle programme is suddenly called into question.

Shetland - Season 8 Episode 4

Friday 29 November 8.30pm

A Met detective returns to Shetland on the trail of a vulnerable witness. DI Ruth Calder teams up with Tosh on a case that will test their fragile, new partnership.

In the interview room, the main suspect for the murder of Ellen Quinn talks of his special connection with the dead girl. He seems to follow some form of ancient religion, but were his funeral rites an act of love, or an attempt to destroy evidence? Tosh orders the team to find enough evidence to charge.

While Grace Bain berates Calder and Tosh over the loss of the body, Stella is caught by the news of Ellen’s friendship with Tom Knox. She visits Tom and, discovering a new side to her daughter, begins to reconsider the role of her own family in their feud.

Calder stews on Jean’s revelation about her father, but is forced to face Tosh when her secret background check on Amma returns a surprising link to Ellen’s life in London.

Upset that Calder is letting her personal life impact the case, Tosh deals with Amma alone before asking Calder if there is anything else she is keeping hidden. Calder says no.

Secret letters signed with the mysterious symbol are found at the suspect’s house. The team wonder if this pen pal was an accomplice in Ellen’s murder. At the same time, hospital security records bring someone new into the frame. The team track them to the remote holiday cottage, only to find a sinister figure, holding a knife, dripping with blood.

Tosh and Calder finally have their culprit for the recent animal killings. They learn that Ellen was anointed with the tattoo to release her from a crippling guilt. The reason for Ellen’s guilt is unknown but Tosh recognises the date of this strange ritual.

Calder asks Cal about Jean’s accusation against her father. Cal knows nothing but, keen to help, he hatches a plan and sets up a meeting with Bobby Bain under false pretences. They reminisce over drinks until Cal oversteps the mark and the night comes to an abrupt end.

Desperate for answers, Calder commissions a DNA test from the lab. Aware that their fragile partnership cannot handle another lie, she keeps it secret from Tosh.

The next morning, the sun rises over a remote moorland to reveal a devastating sight.

Douglas Is Cancelled

Episode 1

Sunday 1 December 8.00pm

TV presenter Douglas faces the backlash of a sexist joke made at a wedding, as his co-host Madeline accidentally amplifies the situation. But was it an accident?

Douglas Is Cancelled introduces us to middle aged, and greying, current affairs news anchor, Douglas Bellowes, a respected broadcaster and raconteur who loves the life he’s created with his newspaper editor wife, Sheila.
Whilst an experienced broadcaster for Live At Six, behind the scenes Douglas surprisingly needs constant reassurance from his sharper, younger, tech savvy, social media aware co-anchor, Madeline, who appears to be able to wrap him around her little finger.

His life is privileged as he’s regarded as a national treasure and apparently, can do no wrong, until he makes an ill-advised joke at his cousin’s wedding, which is overheard by a fellow guest, who threatens to expose his comments on social media.

Speculation is rife and during the on-going hysteria and digital storm, Douglas’s alleged indiscretion is dissected, analysed and blown out of all proportion. Everyone appears to have an opinion and Douglas is struggling to escape the controversy. It’s a chaotic and unmanageable situation, but can Douglas count on the support of his agent and colleagues? What will Douglas do next?

Is he a casualty of ‘cancel culture’? With 2 million followers, what is Madeline’s motivation to social post on Douglas’s behalf? Friend or foe? That is the question.

The Kingdom: The World’s Most Powerful Prince

Episode 1 of 2

Monday 2 December 8.30pm

The story of the extraordinary rise to power of the man who runs Saudi Arabia and whose control of oil affects us all. How he outwitted hundreds of rivals to become Crown Prince.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia – known as MBS - is heir to the throne of the most powerful absolute monarchy in the world and the largest exporter of oil.

MBS’ aged father is ailing and rarely seen - the Crown Prince is effectively already in charge. His story and the decisions he makes are crucial for us all, yet he is just 38. Saudi Arabia’s influence over global oil and the Middle East mean MBS could impact our lives for fifty years. This two-part series tells the extraordinary story of MBS’ rise and rule.

The first episode of the series reveals how MBS went from being just one of hundreds of junior Princes in Saudi Arabia, to seizing power. It hears from friends and advisers, Western Spies and diplomats who have seen him up close, and from those who had been in the inner circles of the Saudi court.

It explores the tension between his desire to reform one of the most conservative countries in the world and his seeming willingness to suppress opposition mercilessly. Above all it reveals how MBS outwitted rivals with a combination of ambition, brains and ruthlessness to become the effective leader of the Kingdom.

Shetland - Season 8

Episode 5

Friday 6 December 8.30pm

A Met detective returns to Shetland on the trail of a vulnerable witness. DI Ruth Calder teams up with Tosh on a case that will test their fragile, new partnership.

Calder is packing her bags to leave when there is a knock from two officers at her hotel door. At the roadside, Sandy tries and fails to keep her from the horrifying sight.

Tosh asks the Sadats if Ellen’s struggles may have been related to Akmal’s death. They see no connection. Ellen barely knew Akmal and wasn’t present the day he drowned. But after Tosh leaves, Farida begins to unravel.

A voicemail from the night before places Calder’s suspicions firmly on Bobby. Tosh resists Calder’s demands to make an arrest and asks Sandy to look after her. But when Sandy finds evidence of drug dealing at the Innes house and James points the finger at Neil Bain, Calder is back on an investigative footing.

The Sadats’ lawyer accuses Tosh of harassment. A horrified Harry asks Tosh to back off, but the warning shot only deepens her suspicion. She combs through the case file and discovers evidence which challenges the official version of Akmal’s death. Harry and Donnie beg Tosh to tread carefully, but she has picked up the scent.

Calder persuades a reluctant Sandy to put the heat on Neil Bain. Under pressure, a panicking Neil squeals on Bobby’s interest in his drug dealing. When Calder and Sandy look further into Bobby’s life, they discover a recent trip to London. Calder wonders why Bobby would have kept such a trip secret, until shocking intelligence from her Met colleagues puts Bobby Bain in an entirely new light.
Tired of pretending, Farida admits the heart-breaking truth behind Akmal’s death. Tosh must put her sympathy on hold to investigate a compelling new motive for the murder of Ellen Quinn.

All Creatures Great and Small Season 4

Saturday 23 November 7:30 PM

All Creatures Great and Small, the critically acclaimed adaptation based on best-selling author James Herriot’s cherished and iconic collection of stories returns for its highly awaited fourth series.

It is Spring 1940 and change is on the horizon for everyone in Skeldale House. James and Helen wonder when the right time might be to start a family, not knowing whether or not James will be called up to serve in the RAF. Tristan’s absence is felt by all, but no one more than Siegfried who attempts to hold the growing household, and himself, together as he braves this new world. Mrs Hall and Helen’s friendship blossoms as they look to the future and new trainee veterinary student Richard Carmody arrives, causing complications in the house.

Episode 1: ‘Broodiness’ – Saturday 23 November

It is Easter 1940 and, without Tristan, Skeldale House is busier than ever. The war hasn’t come to much and James and Helen dream about the future, hoping that James won’t be called up.

A chance encounter with young lad, Wesley Binks, leaves James worrying if his dog, Duke, is being mistreated. James wants to ‘put the animal first’ regardless of the consequences. Meanwhile Siegfried, who is missing Tristan, is repeatedly called out by experienced farmer, Clifford Slavens, and must learn that everyone needs support during hard times.

When Mrs Hall takes a leap of faith, Siegfried offers his support.

Episode 2: Carpe Diem – Saturday 30 November

Chaos reigns in Skeldale House. Siegfried has the bright idea of bringing in an experienced bookkeeper, Miss Harbottle, to bring method to their madness. She’s certainly efficient, but the cracks start to show and a sick ferret puts a spanner in the works.

Farmer Dakin is very attached to his injured, elderly cow, Blossom, but Siegfried advises letting her go. Having made a few rash decisions recently, he might have to put aside his pride as James presses him to see the truth of the situation he has created.

However misguided it might be, James and Helen take inspiration from Siegfried’s ‘Carpe Diem’ approach, and make a long-awaited decision.

This will get a FTA premiere in December
