Compass has an exclusive story on the spate of mental health crises amongst Australia’s high-end chefs, with depression and suicides becoming all too common. But we feature four high profile chefs who have devised strategies to ensure the wellbeing of their staff and their own mental health.

High costs, risk and long hours have always put chefs under enormous pressure, but it’s the advent of social media, and the constant reviews, many unfair, that have made them more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.
Compass gives the audience a rare glimpse into some of the best kitchens in Australia, following four distinguished chefs.

Neil Perry – a national icon who recently opened a 250 seat Chinese restaurant in Sydney called SONGBIRD. Compass has been granted exclusive access to SONGBIRD in the lead up to its opening.

Two renowned chefs from Melbourne - Jacqui Challinor, Executive Chef of the NOMAD group and Ben Shewry, the owner of the award-winning ATTICA restaurant in Melbourne.

Compass also travels to Bali to meet Tim Stapleforth - a young chef who gave up a lucrative career in Melbourne, and now works to incorporate Balinese values of community and spirituality into his cooking.

Saturday 12 October 7.30pm

Alphy is invited to a party at a country manor, where he hopes to raise funds for the ailing church. The evening’s frivolities are cut short when a body is found in the basement.

Alphy receives a mysterious letter in the post one day: a torn-out page of the Bible with a quote circled on it. Not only that, but this is the second time he’s received post of its kind. The meaning behind both letters entirely escapes him. But Alphy doesn’t have long to dwell on this because he has been invited to Marwood Manor for dinner and a party. Alphy plans to use this opportunity to drum up funds for the ailing church, which is currently suffering from rising damp.

But before she agrees to anything officially, Lady Marwood announces that it’s time to play hide and seek. Alphy finds himself in the basement, where he bumps into a shifty Lord Marwood. As Alphy opens a cupboard, looking for a suitable hiding spot, he is shocked to discover a dead body inside.

The body is that of Dennis, the Marwoods’ gardener, who had apparently left the manor only a day before without a word. They find a blackmail letter on him but it’s not immediately clear whether the letter is addressed to Dennis or if he’d written it for someone else. As Alphy and Geordie continue to investigate the murky world of the manor, they begin to uncover strange secrets and illicit desires amongst the residents and staff.

Things are more fraught than ever at the Keatings, with Cathy and Esme still constantly fighting. Now at her wit’s end, Cathy urges Geordie to sit down with Esme and talk to her about her recent behaviour.
The next evening, Geordie comes home ready to have the talk but Esme blindsides Geordie and Cathy by telling them that she’s moving out – she’s going to move into digs with her friend from work.
In a sudden uncontrollable rage, Cathy tells Esme that she hates her. Esme storms out of the room, tears stinging her eyes, whilst Geordie looks on concerned.

The next morning, Esme leaves with her suitcase but Cathy refuses to come to the door to say goodbye.

Saturday 19 October 7.30pm

A murder at Esme’s office sends shockwaves through the Keating family. Alphy’s meeting with the bishop fails to go as planned.

Now living away from home, Esme visits the Keatings one morning with her friend Mae, to bring some washing round. Geordie is happy to see Esme and tries to put a positive spin on things but Cathy is not best pleased.

Later that morning, Geordie and Cathy are confronted by their worst fears when they hear of a young woman’s death at Esme’s office. It turns out to be Esme’s friend, Mae, who has died from anaphylaxis following an allergic reaction. Medical results reveal that Mae had an allergy to almonds.

It had been Mae’s birthday that day and Geordie speculates that it could’ve been her birthday cake that was the cause of the allergic reaction. But when the test results show up negative, a mystery emerges around how Mae ingested almonds. It becomes apparent that someone had done this purposefully, with the intention of murdering Mae. But why would someone want to kill a young woman like this?

Meanwhile, Alphy is eager to update the bishop on the hard work he’s been doing to repair the church. But he is thrown when the bishop tells him that the parishes of Grantchester and Newnham are to be merged, thereby closing down Alphy’s parish. He’s going to be out of a job almost as soon as it has begun. Alphy is devastated by the news and takes to the whiskey bottle.

Cathy struggles to deal with her volatile emotions and grows increasingly concerned that she is becoming like her mother, who was committed to a psychiatric hospital. Cathy visits a doctor who prescribes her some mood stabilisers to help with her temper. Later, over a glass of sherry, Mrs C seeks to reassure Cathy that she isn’t going mad – she is simply a woman trying to get by in a world that isn’t made for them.

Friday 18 October 8.30pm

A legend in her own lifetime, Noele Gordon is the pioneer of daytime programming in the UK, the first woman in the world to appear on colour TV. She even has an entire soap opera, Crossroads , built around her. For nearly two decades, on ITV’s flagship drama, Nolly is the star…

Then in 1981, at the height of the show’s success and the peak of Nolly’s fame, she is axed without ceremony, without warning and with no explanation. As the boss’s final words “All good things must come to an end” ring in her ears, Noele Gordon is thrown out of the show that was her life. Never knowing why.

Nolly reveals the truth, the consequences, and the legacy of that terrible day. In a heartbeat, Noele goes from star to has-been. The ruthless 80s TV machine swings into action, as Nolly goes face-to-face with the men who cast her out – desperate to preserve her dignity and prove her talent to the world all over again.

At the series’ heart are Nolly’s friendships with fellow actors, such as Crossroads’ Tony Adams. It’s a family she created for herself, having squandered her love on a married TV executive, devoting her life instead to a TV soap.

Returning to the stage, Nolly makes her comeback in one of the hardest parts in musical theatre. Something that tests her ability, and resolve – but is it too late? Times are changing, has the world left her behind?

All of this builds towards Nolly’s glorious and defiant return to Crossroads . And at last, we can answer the biggest question of all – why was Noele Gordon sacked?

EPISODE ONE Friday 19 October 8.30pm

Noele Gordon is at the height of her success, with her famous soap opera Crossroads riding high in the ratings. Then she’s suddenly sacked overnight - but why?

For nearly two decades, the iconic Noele Gordon has been the star of ITV’s flagship drama, Crossroads , as motel owner Meg Mortimer. Then in 1981, at the height of the show’s success and peak of Nolly’s fame, she is axed without ceremony, warning or explanation.

As the boss’ words “all good things must come to an end” ring in her ears, Noele faces tough questions about who she is and what she will do without her show.

After trying to control the narrative around her exit, Nolly finds herself at the centre of a media storm, with everyone demanding to know the answer to a single, vital question: why was she sacked? And yet she’s never been told.

Friends in the cast rally round, and Nolly must face a final confrontation with producer, Jack Barton. If she must leave the show, does Meg have to die? Can Nolly save her alter ego’s life, or is it too late?

Nolly already screened in New Zealand April last year on TVNZ. Crossroads have aired on Seven in Australia and TVNZ in New Zealand back in the old times of 1970s and 1980s and Nolly drama was very good but have some inaccuracies.

Her exit from Crossroads looming, Nolly is desperate to know how she is going to be killed off – dreading that her character, Meg, might die.

The whole cast pitch in to help, scouring through scripts for clues to Meg’s fate. But the further they look, the more it seems that her death will be brutal. Murder, maybe even a fire!

Saturday 26 October 7.30pm

Alphy and Geordie’s investigation into the murder of an archaeologist uncovers a tangled web of betrayal and deceit.

Geordie and Larry are called out to Marcus Blakely’s farm one morning, following the discovery of a skeleton in his field. The skeleton turns out to be that of a Roman soldier. Soon after, a team of archaeologists arrive to set up a dig site, causing quite a stir in the village. Mrs C hears the news and convinces Alphy and Jack to walk down and take a look. That night, the archaeologists host a talk at the village hall, showcasing their findings and further plans for the dig.

The next morning, Henry is found dead, eerily lying in the same spot in which the skeleton was discovered. As Alphy and Geordie investigate Henry and his fellow archaeologists further, they uncover a tangled web of betrayal and deceit, in which no-one is quite who they say they are.

Still processing the news that he’s out of a job, Alphy looks for a sign from God about what he should do next. Should he give up and leave, or stay and fight? Feeling lost and out of sorts, Alphy seeks out a shady bar on the other side of town where he partakes in some backroom gambling. Whilst there,
he meets a beguiling young woman.

Following a flirtatious interaction, she takes Alphy back to her college room, where they spend the night together. When Alphy returns home the next morning, he is shocked to discover the vicarage has been broken into and ransacked. With no apparent items missing, Alphy wonders what they could have been looking for. Was this the sign from God that Alphy was looking for, telling him that it’s time to go?

Saturday 2 November 7.30pm

Alphy is stunned to discover that a woman he knows has gone missing. When her friend is later brutally murdered, Alphy and Geordie race to find the answers.

Geordie arrives at the vicarage to ask for Alphy’s help with the case of a missing woman. When Alphy
sees a picture of her, he is stunned to discover that it’s the woman he met in a bar recently, who introduced herself as Petra. It turns out that her real name is Caroline Stansham and her father says she’s been missing for weeks, meaning that Alphy could be one of the last people to have seen her.

When they visit her college room, Alphy is thrown to discover it bare, having been emptied weeks ago. Alphy admits that he was somewhat occupied the last time he was here, so didn’t take much notice of the minimal furnishings. They learn that Caroline had been writing for a student newspaper and track down the paper’s office. It turns out to be nothing more than a converted dorm room, occupied by two aspiring satirists, Innes and Nigel. They inform Alphy and Geordie that they haven’t
seen Caroline in weeks.

Realising they’ve hit a dead end, Geordie calls it a night – without a body, there’s not much else they
can do. But the next morning they are shocked to learn that Innes has been brutally murdered in his
room. How could this have happened? Does it have anything to do with Caroline’s disappearance?
Alphy and Geordie’s investigation leads them back to Sam and the halfway house, where they are thrown to find Caroline alive and well. It turns out that Caroline and Sam are now an item and that she’s dropped out of university to become a part of his group (now called The Way Finders).

Meanwhile, Geordie finds the pills that Cathy has been taking and confronts her about it. Cathy explains that the doctor prescribed them to control her moods. She suggests that this is what Geordie wanted, for Cathy to be calmer, but Geordie remains deeply troubled.

At a loss for what to do, Geordie seeks out Mrs C, asking if she’ll come back to the Keatings, to help out around the house. Mrs C agrees but when she later speaks with Cathy, she realises that Cathy has been wrongly prescribed these pills. That, in actual fact, the symptoms that Cathy has been displaying all point towards her going through ‘The Change’. On hearing this, Cathy is thrown but somewhat relieved to realise she is not going the way of her mother.

Shetland - Season 8

image

Friday 8 November 8.30pm

A Met detective returns to Shetland on the trail of a vulnerable witness. DI Ruth Calder teams up with Tosh on a case that will test their fragile, new partnership.

A Met detective returns to Shetland on the trail of Ellen Quinn, the vulnerable witness to a London gangland murder, when the popular Scottish crime drama returns for its 8th season.

Tosh pauses her investigation into a string of sinister animal killings to help DI Ruth Calder find Ellen before it’s too late. Their journey into the dark recesses of Shetland’s past and present will test this fragile, new partnership.

Ellen’s family are the influential Bains, led by dominant matriarch, Grace. Ellen left Shetland for London months ago. Her family have not seen her since and are surprised to hear that she is back.
Calder and Tosh speak to Ellen’s friends and trace the missing girl to a remote cottage. She evades their grasp and heads out into the moors on her own.

Two gangsters, the experienced Howell and volatile Nowak, arrive on the Isles in search of Ellen. After a covert visit to the Bain farm, they stumble upon her in a remote newsagent. Only an elderly shopkeeper stands in their way.

On top of the case, Calder is faced with figures from her past. She cringes through a chance encounter with deadbeat ex-boyfriend Cal Innes. Even worse is her visit to estranged younger brother Alan, now the minister of their father’s old kirk. It’s clear that the two siblings have starkly different views of their childhood.
Ellen fights back and escapes her captors with a death-defying act of bravery. Night falls as she stalks drenched and exhausted down a remote road, before a pair of headlights draws up behind her.

The next morning, Tosh summons Calder to a brutal scene at the remote shop. It’s not long until another call comes in with devastating news.

Saturday 9 November 7.30pm

When a reclusive man is found dead on the streets of Cambridge, Alphy and Geordie begin to unravel a series of clues that leads them to a shocking revelation.

Geordie and Larry are called out to investigate the death of a man called Fred Eccles on the streets of Cambridge. When they speak to Fred’s landlord, Connie, they learn that he was a reclusive man and spent most of his time painting miniature soldiers. His only real contact was with the people in his church group – The Way Finders. Connie informs them that Sam had been there the night before and an argument about money had taken place.

When questioned, Sam says they argued because Fred had stolen money from the church. He also
reveals that Fred had spoken to Sam about his struggles with his mental health, so he thinks it’s likely that Fred’s death was suicide.

With the team starting to trust Sam less and less, Larry gets hold of an accounts book that was in Sam’s bag. But when they open the book, it turns out to be a wargaming rulebook. Larry returns to Fred’s flat, where he finds the real accounts book, its cover having been swapped with the wargaming book. Larry and Miss Scott look through the accounts and see that Sam has been taking in large sums of money from group members’ donations but all the money was going to Sam, instead of being sent to worthy causes.

Meanwhile, Sam encourages a concerned Leonard to join him at The Way Finders’ new house and
see how Daniel is doing. Leonard finds a buoyant Daniel, hosting group sessions with other members
of the group.

On realising that Leonard has come looking for him, Daniel urges Leonard to leave him alone – he’s happy here and finally feels welcome. But Leonard is worried that Daniel has given too much of himself and his money to Sam’s cause. Will Leonard ever convince Daniel to leave and return to him?

As suspicion around Sam intensifies, Alphy, Geordie and the rest of the team race against the clock to uncover the truth about who Sam really is and what he has done. As the team put the pieces of the puzzle together, they are confronted with a shocking and terrifying revelation. One that puts Daniel and the fellow Way Finders in grave danger.

Friday 15 November 8.30pm

Calder and Tosh stand over a body, lying in a remote ruin. Tosh sees the hand of organised crime in the murder, but Calder observes some wrinkles in the theory. Is this really the work of experienced criminals?
On the other side of the island, Agnes Moffat’s morning drive is interrupted by a gun-toting Howell standing in the middle of the road. He forces Agnes back to her house to look after the wounded Nowak while they wait for a means of escape.

Tosh and Calder deliver the grim news to the victim’s family. Grief and shock turn into action and Bobby Bain uses his connections to trace a construction worker who may have answers.

Calder regrets her one night stand when Cal becomes a person of interest and uses her as his alibi. Harry questions Calder’s suitability for the case, but Tosh insists on keeping her.

Just as the police trace them to Agnes’ croft, Howell’s escape plan comes through. The chase to the beach is on as Nowak’s life hangs in the balance, along with Howell’s future.

But any hope of tying up the case is dashed when Howell denies responsibility for the murder. Tosh shudders at the prospect of a homegrown killer.

Calder decides to mend some family ties before leaving and heads for dinner at the manse, but a surprisingly enjoyable evening ends with an alarming discovery.

Late at the mortuary, Cora’s initial findings offer Tosh little surprise, until a seemingly unremarkable tattoo points the case in a dark, new direction.
