Alphy is invited to a party at a country manor, where he hopes to raise funds for the ailing church. The evening’s frivolities are cut short when a body is found in the basement.
Alphy receives a mysterious letter in the post one day: a torn-out page of the Bible with a quote circled on it. Not only that, but this is the second time he’s received post of its kind. The meaning behind both letters entirely escapes him. But Alphy doesn’t have long to dwell on this because he has been invited to Marwood Manor for dinner and a party. Alphy plans to use this opportunity to drum up funds for the ailing church, which is currently suffering from rising damp.
But before she agrees to anything officially, Lady Marwood announces that it’s time to play hide and seek. Alphy finds himself in the basement, where he bumps into a shifty Lord Marwood. As Alphy opens a cupboard, looking for a suitable hiding spot, he is shocked to discover a dead body inside.
The body is that of Dennis, the Marwoods’ gardener, who had apparently left the manor only a day before without a word. They find a blackmail letter on him but it’s not immediately clear whether the letter is addressed to Dennis or if he’d written it for someone else. As Alphy and Geordie continue to investigate the murky world of the manor, they begin to uncover strange secrets and illicit desires amongst the residents and staff.
Things are more fraught than ever at the Keatings, with Cathy and Esme still constantly fighting. Now at her wit’s end, Cathy urges Geordie to sit down with Esme and talk to her about her recent behaviour.
The next evening, Geordie comes home ready to have the talk but Esme blindsides Geordie and Cathy by telling them that she’s moving out – she’s going to move into digs with her friend from work.
In a sudden uncontrollable rage, Cathy tells Esme that she hates her. Esme storms out of the room, tears stinging her eyes, whilst Geordie looks on concerned. The next morning, Esme leaves with her suitcase but Cathy refuses to come to the door to say goodbye.
