Capturing the flavour of an ancient empire, chef Rick Stein embarks on a memorable odyssey through Italy, Croatia, Albania, Greece and Turkey during this new seven-part series.

Exploring the culinary legacy of the legendary Byzantine Empire, Rick uncovers its little-known history and cuisine, and relishes the food that many people associate with holidays in the eastern Mediterranean and the Adriatic – healthy, light, tasty dishes that go so well with sunshine, remote islands, chilled wine and clear, aquamarine seas.

Rick’s culinary odyssey begins in Venice, a place that played a major role at both ends of Byzantine history and his travels twist and turn past the shorelines of the Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean seas.

Continuing through the stunning mountains of Croatia, Albania and Greece, down to the Peloponnese, and through western Turkey, he concludes his journey in Istanbul, formerly known as the city of Byzantium and gateway to the flavours of the Middle East. Along the way he visits local markets, cafés, restaurant kitchens and people’s homes to show how their evocative dishes have developed over thousands of years.

###Plumpton High Babies: Ten Years On

Directed and narrated by Aviva Ziegler, this one-hour film takes us back into the lives of three young women whom we met over ten years ago when they were part of a unique program to keep teenage mothers at school.

In Sydney’s outer west, an area known for social problems and one of the highest pregnancy rates in Australia, Avivia spent a year filming at Plumpton High School where an idealistic principal, Glenn Sargeant, battled to keep a group of teenage mothers, many from disadvantaged backgrounds, at school.

The Plumpton High Young Mothers Programme, instigated by Glenn, was a unique program in the Australian education system and possibly even the world. Glenn believed that education could provide opportunities for even the poorest and most marginalised of students; if he could encourage their hopes and aspirations he could open doors to a world far beyond the one they knew or expected.

The challenges for the school, the girls and their families were huge as they struggled during their difficult transition to adulthood. The four-part series screened on the ABC in 2003, with their stories capturing the imagination of the viewing public.

The series concluded with the girls and their babies on the threshold of their lives together – with the real story yet to unfold. Now 10 years on, this film provides a long awaited answer to a constantly asked question: “Whatever happened to those teenage mothers from the original series?”

It is only on returning to the complex realities of the girls’ lives today that we see how much they and their children have at stake. All now have more than one child dependent on them; and each is at a significant turning point.

Simone – the girl once voted by Glenn ‘the most likely to succeed’ – is doing it tough. Mark, the boyfriend for whom she dropped out of school, is bipolar and struggles to get work. At 27, Simone is already pinning her hopes for the future on the next generation. But can her young son live up to this?

Meanwhile, Jacinta – despite teenage tragedy – has never given up her rose-coloured dreams. She is planning to get married – if only she can afford the wedding.

While in stark contrast, 27-year-old Baby has finally made it to university but the demanding struggles of single motherhood and full-time study are weighing her down.

As we uncover the drama of these still very young lives and their very real struggles with family, relationships, work and self-esteem, we see whether they have managed to get through ‘the doors’ that Glenn believed school could open for them or whether they have been overwhelmed by circumstances beyond their control. Did the Young Mothers Programme help any of them in the challenges they currently face? Did it break the welfare cycle? And what difference, if any, did it make?

ABC simulcasts Crowded House Live as part of Ausmusic Month Celebrations

The ABC has front row seats to the hottest music event of 2016 – and you’re all invited.
On Sunday November 27, as part of Ausmusic Month celebrations, ABC TV, Double J and iview will simulcast Crowded House’s performance live from the iconic Sydney Opera House forecourt. It will also be live-streamed on the ABC TV Facebook page (@ABCTV).

The special live event will mark a worthy finale to a whole month of diverse musical content across ABC radio, TV, iview and online throughout November.

The 2017 version of Catalyst was mentioned on Media Watch tonight with JH discussing media reports that 11 staff would be sacked and weekly TV show format scrapped. He reported that the claim of staff sacking was not true and the show would return in 2017 as 17 one hour shows produced in-house (also contrary to the report).

In this 3x60”, Joanna will journey over 2000 miles travelling across Japan by boat, train, plane and foot. From rustic mountains to sprawling metropolitan super cities, Joanna will embark on an epic journey across this beautiful, yet often perplexing, country of extremes and give audiences a unique insight into the people who make up these enchanting islands and their rich culture.

Starting in the north, in Hokkaido, Japan’s ‘wild north’, Joanna will make her away across Hokkaido by train and car. Known for its rugged terrain, it is home to some of Japan’s most beautiful and endangered wild animals.
Next, she will go to Honshu, the largest and most populated of Japan’s islands. Winding her way south, she will begin in Tohoku, before boarding the bullet train, which will plunge her into the metropolitan sprawl of Tokyo, before taking her to the ancient capital, Kyoto.

Finally, Joanna will journey through Japan’s forgotten island, Shikoku, on foot, before crossing over to the volcanic Kyushu Island.

Joanna’s epic journey comes to its end on the idyllic beaches of Kohama, one of Japan’s smallest and most remote pacific islands

Set in the 1970s and boasting an array of captivating performances from its talented Australian cast, Rosemary Myers’ directorial debut feature film Girl Asleep, is a coming of age story that explore the life of 14-year-old Greta Driscoll.

###Right Here: The Go-Betweens

Screen NSW & ABC TV Arts announce first Documentary Feature Fund film Kriv Stenders’ RIGHT HERE: THE GO-BETWEENS

The first film to be commissioned under the Screen NSW – ABC TV Arts Documentary Feature Fund has been announced today. Kriv Stenders (Red Dog) has created and will direct Right Here: The Go-Betweens.

Right Here: The Go-Betweens will explore the melodramatic saga behind the rise and fall of one of the most artistically successful and influential Australian bands of the last 40 years.

The Screen NSW – ABC TV Arts Documentary Feature Fund (DFF) is a new three-year joint initiative to fund one new feature length arts documentary each year. The three films will have their world premiere each year at the Sydney Film Festival prior to screening on ABC TV. Right Here: The Go-Betweens will premiere at the 2017 Sydney Film Festival.

Screen Australia is the major investor in the film through its documentary program.

Kriv Stenders has directed music videos throughout his illustrious career, including several for The Go-Betweens.

“This is very much a dream project for me, as The Go-Betweens and their music have been a fundamental part of my life since I was 15 years old. To be able to tell and share their epic story and to have original members onboard with me is a thrill beyond definition,” he said.

Robert Forster said: “Kriv Stenders is an artist in film and I am sure he will tell the story of The Go-Betweens with flair and precision.”

Kriv Stenders is one of Australia’s most successful filmmakers. His new film Red Dog: True Blue, prequel to his smash-hit feature Red Dog, opens in cinemas across Australia on Boxing Day and he will also direct the upcoming television drama series Wake in Fright, the contemporary retelling of the Australian classic. Red Dog earned $22m at the box office, and is the ninth highest grossing Australian feature of all time. The film won Best Director and Best Film at the 2011 IF Awards and the Best Film award at the inaugural 2012 AACTA Awards.

The film will be produced by Joe Weatherstone, with Chris Hilton and David Alrich as executive producers for Essential Media and Entertainment, one of Australia’s leading production companies of drama, factual and documentary programs.
