Starstruck - Season 2

image

From Wednesday 16 February at 9:00pm, all episodes available on ABC iview

I’m surprised that this show gets a slot on the main channel when other comedies are pushed to ABC2/Comedy/Plus or whatever they’re going to call it this year.

I struggled to stay interested in the first season and I’m surprised it was even renewed for a second season.

Grand Designs New Zealand - Season 6

image

From Sunday 20 February 7.40pm

Suze and Joe Hardie battle storms and complex weather as they build a coastal paradise on a steep site with picturesque view of Piha on New Zealand’s North Island.

Presented by Chris Moller, Grand Designs New Zealand takes us into the heart of life’s great unfolding human stories, where ordinary Kiwi families risk all to experiment with architecture, technology, and their own lifestyle, in the most geographically challenging locations.

Joe and Suze Hardie are passionate about the beautiful, wild, west coast beach settlement of Piha on the North Island, where they’ve lived for the past 6 years with their two children in an old beach house, perched high on a steep hillside with jaw dropping ocean views.

They’re extremely social people who adore entertaining, but their current house has very little indoor or outdoor living space, so the plan is to knock it down and replace it with a beautiful new, modernist home, tailor-made to suit their lifestyle.

Suze and Joe want their new home to capture the raw aesthetic of the rugged west coast so it will feature polished concrete floors, rough-sawn timber and black steel cladding - the colour of Piha’s striking iron-sand beaches.

But building this impressive home will not be easy. To achieve the outdoor space Joe and Suze want, will require major retaining work, and access to their dramatic hillside site is extremely limited. It’s not surprising they’re feeling nervous about what they’re embarking on. In fact, just weeks before the project was due to start, they got very close to abandoning it altogether.

Broadcasting live from the Sydney Cricket Ground, the 2022 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade unites LGBTQIA+ people in a dazzling display of pride and self-expression. The ABC will also feature LGBTQI+ content on triple j, ABC iview, ABC Radio Sydney and local radio around the country and on ABCQueer.

Since its beginnings in 1978, the parade has evolved into a wonderful celebration of queer Australia. The ABC has long been a part of that history – it was the first media organisation to televise Mardi Gras in 1994 and, with the ABC turning 90 this year, continues its commitment to connecting and celebrating LGBTQIA+ communities across Australia.

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade has returned to ABC as part of a three-year exclusive broadcasting deal which also includes Sydney WorldPride in 2023 and offers exclusive broadcast rights across TV, triple j and ABC Radio.

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of the world’s largest and most-loved LGBTQIA+ celebrations. The theme this year is United We Shine, signifying that LGBTQIA+ communities shine brighter together and by standing up against hate and inequality as a collective, the message of love and inclusion is heard louder.

ABC Host announcement to follow.

Antiques Roadshow - Season 42

From Sunday 27 February 6.00pm

Antiques Roadshow comes from the colourful surrounds of Morden Hall Park, London, where finds include a rare Cartier driver’s watch, a tiny painting by a German impressionist and a plate designed by Picasso.

Antiques Roadshow comes from the colourful surrounds of Morden Hall Park in south London, where big value finds include a rare Cartier driver’s watch, a tiny painting by a German impressionist and a plate designed by Pablo Picasso.

Jewellery specialist Joanna Hardy is dazzled by a diamond-studded replica of a brooch originally designed for Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, while glass specialist Andy McConnell covets three early 18th-century pieces bought for just a few pence.

Hilary Kay delivers a show-stopping valuation when she appraises a remarkable self-portrait by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, done shortly after their wedding and famous ‘bed-in’ of 1969. Books specialist Matthew Haley challenges Fiona to choose the ‘Basic, Better and Best’ from three editions of classic children’s books – The Lord of the Rings, Roald Dahl’s Matilda, and Harry Potter.

The Missing Children

Monday 28 February 9.30 pm

At the Tuam mother and baby home in Ireland, 796 children, born to unwed mothers disappeared. The Missing Children uncovers the truth of a shocking story of what happened to them.

In a small town in the West of Ireland, a local historian uncovers the death certificates of 796 children who died in a mother and baby home that incarcerated unwed mothers. When she can’t find where they are buried, she begins to suspect they could be in a sewage tank in the grounds of the former home run by the Bon Secours nuns.

The story becomes an international scandal, forcing the Irish Government to order a partial excavation of the site. Forensic archaeologists find “significant quantities” of juvenile remains but without a full excavation many questions are left unanswered. Why did so many children die in the care of nuns who were trained nurses? Are all the babies in the sewage tank? Or could some death records have been falsified and children illegally adopted to America?

Production credit: A Truenevision production in association with Topic Static. Producer: Rachel Cumella, Executive Producers: Brian Woods and Anne Morrison, Director: Tanya Stephan.

It will be the premiere of the controversial 2-part BBC documentary The Princes and the Press, which explores the relationship of the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex with the media. It concludes on February 17.

The Princes and the Press

Thursday, 10 and 17 February, 9.30pm

Two brothers, two very different experiences. Learn how the new generation of royals are navigating
their relationships with modern Britain’s most powerful force – it’s press.
Find out how a royal rebrand allowed William and Kate to define their own narrative, and how
accusations of racism and harassment put Harry and Meghan at war with the tabloids. Hear from
journalists and royal insiders and discover how the role of the press is changing for the monarchy.
This incisive and timely documentary unpicks a modern royal drama, and searches for definitive
conclusions to its most controversial questions.

EP1: Thursday 10 February, 9.30pm

Presenter, Amol Rajan explores the years following the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the positive
media reaction to the emergence of a new generation of royals. The film charts the years leading up
to and including the engagement and marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Providing context
for the princes’ relationship with the media, the film examines some of the illegal activities
engaged in by some newspapers in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including hacking and ‘blagging’,
and how these techniques were used to target members of the royal family and their associates.

EP2: Thursday 17 February 9.30pm

Amol Rajan examines the period from 2018 to 2021, a tumultuous time for the royals that includes
the birth of Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and the royal tours of the Sussexes and the Cambridges. He
also looks at the circumstances surrounding the Sussexes’ decision to step down from their senior
royal roles, explores the legal cases brought by the couple against some newspaper groups from 2019
onwards, and considers the impact Princess Diana’s experiences with the press and broadcasters had
on her sons.
