ABC Sports Broadcasting

I hope the games start earlier so there is no chance of any extra time causing the game to bump into the 7:00pm news.

The ABC revealed its 5-year plan today, in which the broadcaster said it would continue to bid for sports rights where possible, despite federal funding freeze and the loss of around 250 jobs.
I am glad that the ABC will continue to broadcast live sport, on radio and/or TV.

The fixture for the resumption of 2019-2020 A-League season was released today, with 27 matches in 28 days to finish the regular season, before the finals series start on 15 August.
According to the A-League website, the matches to be shown on the ABC are:
Tuesday 21 July: Sydney FC v Newcastle (kick off 7.30pm AEST)
Wednesday 22 July: Western Sydney Wanderers v Melbourne Victory (kick off 7.30pm AEST)
Friday 24 July: Central Coast v Newcastle (kick off 7.30pm AEST)
Monday 3 August: Melbourne Victory v Central Coast (kick off 7.30pm AEST)

i wonder if these games will be shown on the main channel, or “bumped” onto ABC Comedy or even ABC Me?

I think the four matches will be shown on ABC Comedy (live in the eastern states, delayed into SA, NT and WA) then replayed on the main channel at around 11pm.

The ABC has four channels, so why can’t it be live everywhere. And a late night replay is a pointless, just put it on iView.

I don’t think the A-League can be shown on ABC News channel. It can be streamed live on iView however.

Where did you get that list from? It doesn’t match up at all with the TV info provided on the A-League’s website - according to that, the ABC TV games are:

  • Saturday 18th July: Central Coast Mariners v Perth Glory;
  • Saturday 25th July: Western United v Sydney FC;
  • Saturday 1st August: Sydney FC v Melbourne City FC; and
  • Saturday 8th August: Melbourne Victory v Perth Glory
  • Note: All games kick-off at 5pm AEST

I got the first list from the fixture at A-League website last night. They may realised the errors and changed the ABC TV matches this morning.

The ABC’s matches could change, with the NSW Government tonight granting late exemptions to three Victorian clubs (Melbourne Victory, Melbourne City and Western United) to fly to Sydney for the resumption of the 2019-20 season, enabling them to fly to Sydney once players and staff all return negative tests for COVID-19. When they arrive in Sydney, the players and staff will have to be in self-quarantine for 14 days but can train during that time.
Quoting from Football Federation Australia CEO James Johnson’s statement:

Now that we have certainty that all our clubs will be ready for the restart, we will look to modify our match schedule accordingly to give all teams the opportunity to perform at their best.

UPDATE 16/7: the ABC’s Saturday matches have changed after the A-League announced the amended fixture yesterday. The FTA line-ups will now be:
July 18: Perth Glory v Central Coast Mariners (no change)
July 25: Wellington Phoenix v Adelaide United
August 1: Melbourne City v Sydney FC (no change)
August 8: Perth Glory v Melbourne Victory
August 15: Sydney FC v Western United

Not sure why the graphic omits ABC TV

Because its not live outside of AEST states.

The match is live outside of AEST states, according to ABC’s online guide.

Also according to ABC’s official guides the A-league games are live around the country. Seems strange to omit the potentially biggest audience on FTA. It should include iView as well as the games are live (and free) there as well.

The 2020 A-League finals series starts this weekend. In a very odd move, ABC ME has been chosen to broadcast three matches on delay, all at 8.25pm local time. The three finals on FTA are:
Sunday 23 August - elimination final: Brisbane Roar v Western United
Wednesday 26 August - semi final: Melbourne City v Western United
Sunday 30 August - grand final

It means the FTA coverage of the A-League title decider won’t be shown live and in HD this year.

Updated 23/8

Wasn’t the no live finals known at the beginning of the agreement? As for being shafted to ABC Me, have you seen the ratings they’re getting in a Saturday afternoon?

I wonder why the A-League finals aren’t shown on main channel or ABC Comedy, because they generally get more viewers than ABC ME at night.

Probably because they’d rate atrociously, dependingon the teams perhaps the GF could be on the main channel. That said, could have been a good time to introduce him comedy on ABC 2.

It sucks that none of the finals games will be live on FTA. But it is what it is.

As for some of the matches to be on ABC ME? Well, if that channel airs Rage for an hour or so each night (that’s not related to children’s programs), then why not show some A-League matches there too.
