Craig Allen will present weekdays, but only while they âseek a replacementâ: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/who-will-be-the-new-abc-newsreader-now-virginia-haussegger-has-quit-20160920-grk4c3.html
Sally Sara named ABC News Africa correspondent
Sally Sara, one of Australiaâs most accomplished foreign correspondents, is returning to Africa for ABC News, based in Nairobi.
Sara was previously Africa correspondent from 2000-2005 and South Asia correspondent based in Delhi from 2008-2010.
Sara reported from the frontline in Afghanistan as well as on the lives of its civilians. She has also travelled widely across Australia for Landline and more recently clocked up many more kilometres working for Foreign Correspondent, including recently reporting from Istanbul on the aftermath of the attempted coup in Turkey.
An award-winning journalist, in 2011 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. Her book on women in Africa, Gogo Mama, was published in 2006.
Deputy Director of ABC News Craig McMurtrie said: âWhatever the working environment she faces, Sally has demonstrated time and time again a formidable capacity to find the right person and story that cuts to the heart of an issue.â
Sara will take up the posting next year, replacing Martin Cuddihy, who has completed his three-year posting.
Also applies to ABC Radio, Foreign Correspondent etc
Gosh. Greg Jennett is a terrible moderator for the ACT Election debate. Great reporter, not so good in events like this.
He was great for NT Votes. Wonder if heâll be on for Saturday?
Gloria Kalache presenting in Victoria Friday - Sunday this week.
Just like in the USA. (most of the ABC affiliates in the USA are on channel 7, right?)
Glad you got the joke
Jenny Woodward celebrates 30 years as ABC News Queenslandâs weather presenter
Today marks 30 years since Jenny Woodwardâs smiling face first graced television sets across Queensland on ABC News, making her what is believed to be Australiaâs longest-serving weather presenter.
One of the longest serving and easily one of the best! Congratulations Jenny. Always a pleasure seeing you grace our screens nationally on ABC News 24.
Stan Grant has joined ABC News as Indigenous Affairs Editor and host of a new 7.30 Friday program on ABCTV.
He will also fill in for Leigh Sales on 7.30
Stan Grant joins the ABC
Stan Grant, one of Australiaâs best known and most respected journalists, is joining ABC News in a two-fold role: Taking the newly-created position of Editor, Indigenous Affairs Coverage as well as hosting a new Friday night current affairs program.
Starting in December, Grant will lead and drive ABC Newsâs coverage of Indigenous affairs, overseeing planning and content co-ordination nationally. More information on this will be released soon.
From next year he will also present a new program in the 7.30pm Friday slot, helmed by Executive Producer Jo Puccini. This is still in the planning stages, with details to come. He will also fill in on 7.30 for presenter Leigh Sales.
Director of News Gaven Morris said: âStan is one of Australiaâs top journalists, a highly respected talent with extensive media experience nationally and internationally. He is also one of our leading voices in the area of Indigenous affairs. As such, he is ideally suited for both of these key roles, and we are thrilled he has agreed to take them on.
âIndigenous affairs is an area of great importance to our nation and one ABC News has always comprehensively covered. Stan will lead the way in extending and better structuring our reporting on it throughout our news and current affairs coverage.â
Grant said: âThis role, and other plans still to be announced, are about the ABC engaging in a more structured way with Indigenous issues. These issues go to the heart of the country â to who we are as Australians â and these initiatives will put the ABC at the heart of the conversation.
âIt is significant and appropriate for the national broadcaster to lead this discussion among all Australians, and I am excited to be a part of it.â
Excellent.
Stan Grant has joined ABC News as Indigenous Affairs Editor and host of a new 7.30 Friday program on ABCTV.
Oooooo Sky News will be seething. First that political journo was poached by Lateline and now this.
Iâm glad the Friday edition of 7.30 is being killed off. There wasnât much point to it if they could never manage to get Leigh to present. It felt wasteful to have the excellent talent of Matt Wordsworth only present one show a week when he could be better utilised doing another program for the network in a bigger role.
Itâs not like this was unexpected either; when the state editions were killed off, rumour was that 7.30 Fridays would be a new show hosted by Sales and Crabb.
When did ABC News start using random peopleâs tweets in televised news reports? I noticed it in one of the reports after the Dreamworld incident this week.
Sure, grab a tweet from Turnbull or Trump or Clinton. But from random âcharactersâ that donât even have names on twitter? So, so poor.
You canât have a random poll of thoughts on an issue when you go to a self-selecting sourceâŚseriously dopey.
I fundamentally disagree with the appointment of an Indigenous affairs editor - it is contrary to the legislation which established the ABC.
Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act (1983) Section 6
(1) The functions of the Corporation are:
(a)(i) broadcasting programs thatâŚreflect the cultural diversity of, the Australian community;
(2) In the provision by the Corporation of its broadcasting services within Australia:
(a) the Corporation shall take account of:
(iv) the multicultural character of the Australian community;
We should not have reporters assigned to cover issues only related to a specific racial or ethnic group. Assigning an editor to cover issues which only affect Indigenous Australians, and not, for example, Italian Australians or Vietnamese Australians, fails to take account of the multicultural character of the Australian community.
Further, this will also mean a reduction in the quality of news broadcasting, whereby stories will often be selected to fulfil an allocation of assigned screen time, rather than on the basis of importance. Think Andrew Rochford having to report for Seven News x times a week about a medical issue and therefore often coming up with a dud report.
Sydney Morning Herald report on Stan Grant
The new Indigenous affairs team comes as part of ABC managing director Michelle Guthrieâs strategic focus on boosting diversity in the organisation. It was the key recommendation from an internal Indigenous staff summit.
I suggest to dopey Ms Guthrie that if she held a Sudanese Australian staff summit too, she might find a similar recommendation. Itâs her job, however, to ensure that the ABC delivers what it is designed to do. Big fail by Michelle Guthrie. But clap clap for (not) diversity. Moron.
Assigning an editor to cover issues which only affect Indigenous Australians, and not, for example, Italian Australians or Vietnamese Australians, fails to take account of the multicultural character of the Australian community.
So because there isnât an editor for each of the hundreds of cultures in Australia, we shouldnât have any at all?
Indigenous peoples represent 400,000 Australians, and they are the original Australians, and the A in ABC stands for Australia, and they are a segment of the population still suffering with the crippling consequences of colonisation 200 years later. I think maybe we can give them a pass on this one.
I do recognise that the appointment of an Indigenous Affairs editor is a massive injustice to you though.
So youâve seen already Stanâs new program and know exactly what will happen? Itâs 7.30pm on a Friday, who the fuck is going to be massively disserviced by this move?

By, as the ABC Charter you so helpfully cited states, reflecting the cultural diversity of, the Australian community, Guthrie is failing. K.
So because there isnât an editor for each of the hundreds of cultures in Australia, we shouldnât have any at all?
Er, youâve basically answered your own question thereâŚthe clear answer is no, when we have so many different racial and ethnic communities in Australia.
If Stan was appointed to focus on issues affecting any of the numerous racial and ethnic groups of Australians, than sure, we should have one.
Indigenous peoples represent 400,000 Australians,
Thank you for this statistic.
We also have 481,000 Chinese Australians (actual foreign born, let alone those who are of Chinese heritage), similarly, 432,000 Indian Australians.
I could go on, but I think we all know different racial groups exist in Australia without the quoting of specific numbers, lol.
and they are the original Australians,
Whatâs this got to do with the price of tea in China? Are we delivering a national news services based on nepotism now - tell me, how many generations does a family need to be in Australia to constitute âAustralianâ in your eyes?
Further, Indigenous Australians are not a homogenous, closed-off historical blob as you make out - many thousands have different backgrounds, so the phrase âoriginal Australianâ is just nonsense guff.
, and they are a segment of the population still suffering with the crippling consequences of colonisation 200 years later. I think maybe we can give them a pass on this one.
No actually, there is no pass - the ABC Act is very clear. Itâs not up to you to decide to reword the purpose of the ABC.
Further, once again, they are not a homogenous blob - âsuffering with the crippling consequences of colonisationâ is a cliched assortment of words, but actually means nothing in reality.
Of course, if you were genuinely interested in people who âsuffer from the crippling consequences of colonisationâ, then youâd support my stance that the ABC should report on those effects on all Australians who have come from land areas that were previously colonised (which, basically, is the whole world - for example, maybe check out some Indian, Chinese, Iberian or Balkan history, you might learn something).

What a dopey rebuttal - Iâm talking about Stan Grant being appointed Indigenous editor, and how that will impact on ABC news story delivery - youâre blabbering on about a completely different topic - his 7:30 Friday show.
So maybe calm the âfuckâ down and actually read, rather than rant.
Sure. Maybe you havenât learned what diversity actually means - itâs defined as âa range of different thingsâ - from the face of it, I think it is very clear that appointing a dedicated editor to only report on ONE racial group is not a RANGE of things.
See, youâve just fallen into the common trap of thinking âdiversityâ means whatever âissueâ you and others find âedgyâ and âcompellingâ rather than, well, âdiversityâ.
Welcome to the forum, Donald.
