ABC News History

Another 2004 closer for the Midday News + Business has been uploaded, this 100% confirms that the Midday News in 2004 was using a slightly different version of the 1998 arrangement of the ABC News theme. Finding clean stereo copies of both this and the 1998 arrangement remains my white whale.

Incredible to believe that in 2004 the ABC only had the Midday News + Business, 7pm News, 7.30 Report and Late Line as its weekday news service.

when did Business Breakfast air (briefly)? would have been around then too?

From memory around 2002. Very short lifespan.

The ABC did have an early morning bulletin at 6am in the mid 90s, but children’s and educational programming mainly took precedence. It really wasn’t until ABC2 was launched that the ABC could expand its news output throughout the day.

When did Business Today (Last hosted by Whitney Fitzsimmons) start? I just read an article saying it was axed in August 2014 when the Coalition cut the ABC’s budget but how soon after Business Breakfast did that program start?

2006… the same time Lateline Business with Ali Moore launched.

I seem to recall ABV2 used to run 2-3 minute ABC News updates at 8:30pm (and maybe 9:30pm, too?) with Ian Henderson “in the Ripponlea news room”. Not quite sure when they ceased.

From memory they had a local update at 6.00pm and 8.30pm. I think the 9.30pm was a national update from Sydney.

Ah, that’s right. I forgot about 6pm.

Yeah, Jacinta Tynan did them for along time, after The Bill on a Tuesday night.

Do they no longer have news updates throughout the night on ABC TV nowadays?

Not for sometime - as late as 2015 they were mentioning at the end of the 7pm bulletins that there would be an update in an hours time.

Only updates now shown on ABC-TV is a 30 second preview for the 7pm news, and a short update before Insiders on Sunday

It took me a while to realise too. There have been so many technology changes: the internet means that many people now watch the television news less to see what’s going on, and more to get the details of what’s going on. News updates throughout the evening are probably redundant now.

The days of me actually sitting down and watching a chunk of ABC Television as it’s broadcast have long been over. I still watch and love ABC, but it’s via iView these days, so I rarely see the promos like I used to. The one exception is ABC News Victoria, but with a young family even that gets interrupted sometimes and I have to watch later on iView.

I always recall it being national but this update from Kathy Boland appears to be be at 830 and she’ll be back in an hour. When it was national I think it became “another update in an hour”

Been looking through some clips and it seems like Rosemary was the main presenter? Funny to see her on the ABC. She’s been with CNN for so long, I always associate her with that.

Partially related to ABC News theme chatter, this video has been around for a while:

And I always thought the theme in this intro was a bit out there. Fast forward to this weekend, when I bought Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan and the first track I played was Bodhisattva:

Absolutely wild! Does anyone know the context around this choice of news theme, and how long it lasted?
