ABC News History

with Foxtel and Optus refusing the service, ABC-Fairfax would have possibly asked a big price of Galaxy as the potential sole client. And I think Galaxy was probably having enough financial trouble without the high cost of an Australian news channel.

The studio and playout assets ended up being gobbled by the ABC at Gore Hill to upgrade to digital playout up the hill in the Frank Dickson building migrating from the Tower Block basement analogue playout facility which was falling to bits at the time. The AIM studio ended up being used by the ABC for storage.

In light of the launch of the new ABC News theme and graphics, I thought it would be interesting ask what other members’ opinions are on previous graphic packages?

I always liked the previous package (10/04/2017- 18/08/2024) - especially after the opening titles were revamped. The black colour gave it a slick look in my opinion.

Not sure how I feel about the News 24 package (25/07/2010 - 09/04/2017). For me it was the one I grew up watching so I guess it’s one of my favourites.

The packages before that (26/01/2005 - 24/07/2010), (1998-25/01/2005), etc. I have no comment on. Like seriously I don’t have any good or bad feelings towards them

I wonder what other members think?

The 2010-2017 looks was very good for the time, and some parts of it would still look good today IMO.

The 2017-2024 look was good, however, the titles were a bit bland.

#TIL that ABC Canberra’s TV news bulletin (in its current form at least) only began in 2001. From my little Wikipedia research I found that Canberra did have a 30-minute bulletin similar to that of other metro stations in the mid 80s-early 90s before it was axed and the news from Sydney was relayed. Seems like an interesting anomaly considering the majority of other metro stations’ news bulletins have stayed rather consistent in format since their stations began broadcasting … (i may be acting very ignorant here but oh well)

Anyway if anyone else has any other info on this it would be rather enriching to hear.

Apart from what you mentioned, after they re-introduced the weeknight bulletin, ABC Canberra still took the weekend NSW bulletin until the Canberra bushfires in 2003 convinced management to introduce a local weekend bulletin (along with the NT).

Also, does anyone know if the ACT got a local version of the 7.30 report (back in the late 80s when all states had their own version), and when they got their own version of Stateline (later 7.30 ACT).

Canberra Studio 11 at Northbourne Avenue did play a prominent part of ABC TV coverage through the late 60s to late 80s in the nightly current affairs political coverage for national programs like TDT, Nationwide, The National, Carlton Walsh Report and 7.30 Report until Studio 12 at new Parliament House mostly took over network commitments from 1988 onwards.

I thought I posted this the other day but now can’t see it…
ABC News 1st Edition 1993

anybody know when this show started and ended? I have seen images from it later in the 90s where it looks like a generic bulletin.

Started February 1993 with Doug Weller and Kate Dunstan. Was taken off air in May for refinement. Returned in September with Tony Eastley and was reduced from an hour to 30 minutes. Eastley hosted until May 1995, when Kathy Bowlen took over until it was axed in August 1996.
