An ABC NEWS Documentary:
Diabolical: The Epstein Files
Airs Monday 2 March at 8pm on ABC TV and ABC iview
It’s the scandal that has shocked Americans and rocked the Trump administration.
A legal and political saga that has shattered fundamental beliefs that all are equal in the eyes of the law.
When society rich lister and sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his jail cell in 2019, the long-running conspiracy theories exploded.
Was he murdered? Did he blackmail his powerful friends? Who in his elite circle was involved in his crimes?
And ultimately, how did Epstein evade justice for so long?
Most Americans believe the answers lie in the Epstein Files, a closely guarded record of the investigations into one of the most disturbing criminal cases of modern times.
In this debut feature from the ABC’s newly-established News documentary unit, Walkley Award-winning reporter Grace Tobin is on the ground, talking to those closest to the story as the files are released — including rebel Republican politicians Thomas Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene; Epstein’s brother Mark who believes Epstein was murdered; Julie K. Brown, the journalist whose investigation helped put Epstein behind bars; and the survivors whose campaigning forced the hand of a President.
Executive Producer, Caitlin Shea (Nemesis, Australian Story): “Featuring a stellar cast of interviewees, Diabolical explains how the life and crimes of Jeffrey Epstein united a divided America in a grassroots uprising against powerful elites. And examines which conspiracy theories might actually be true.”
ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks: “Diabolical represents exactly why we created this unit: comprehensive, meticulous journalism that puts facts first and gives audiences clarity in the midst of complexity. I couldn’t be prouder of this debut and the signal it sends about our commitment to truth-driven storytelling, and the ABC’s focus on covering issues of global relevance.”
ABC Director, News Justin Stevens : “This investigation exemplifies the power of rigorous journalism. Caitlin and her team have approached this story with precision, depth, and integrity. It not only informs but sparks important conversations, and it’s just the beginning of the compelling work we have in store.”
Diabolical: The Epstein Files airs Monday 2 March at 8pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.
Journalists at the ABC who cover any topic which comes under the remit of the royal commission into antisemitism received a sobering edict from news boss Justin Stevens on Friday: they cannot send or receive confidential Signal messages because no communications can be destroyed.
Journalists use disappearing messages in some circumstances to communicate with confidential sources in an effort to protect what they tell them.
The ABC is one of a number of commonwealth departments and agencies which must comply with a disposal freeze order from the National Archives of Australia.
“This includes disappearing messages on apps such as Signal,” Stevens said. “Going forward, if you receive or send messages on Signal or any similar apps on these topics, continuing to use a disappearing messages setting would be a breach of the notice.
“If you regularly delete emails for storage and security reasons we have to exclude emails on these topics from deletion until further notice.”
The order also applies to staff at SBS, the Australian Communications and Media Authority and the eSafety Commissioner.
The ABC had a similar notice in 2020 around the Afghanistan inquiry, Stevens said.
The topics ABC staff are not allowed to delete include: social cohesion in Australia; antisemitism and religious and ideologically motivated extremism and radicalisation; the capabilities and powers of law enforcement, border control, immigration and security agencies to respond to antisemitic conduct; the circumstances surrounding the Bondi terrorist attack.
Laetita Lemke made a odd appearance of presenting the NT 7pm for the first time in about 4-5 years
I believe she was reporting for SBS recently.
According to her LinkedIn she’s the AM chief of staff

No mention of South Australia ![]()
Well, at least the ABC News is doing their best to prune as much inaccuracy as possible, quicker than the competition. So there’s that.
I think this ad campaign will save their hides from this recent hiccup.
Not everyone can be perfect in the age of misinformation, Murphy’s Law has something to say about it. But as long as they just keep up the pace and do their best, they’ll be better trusted than say, News dot com or whatever else is floating.
I hate this approach to Stateline. You either make it a weekly show with all 5 minute segments presented as one program or you don’t do it at all and just add them as regular short clips in your bulletin.
What is this? The first Tuesday Night Book Club but for state news??? Not to mention Friday night is probably the worst night to do it with Footy and people out and about.
How about just compiling them all and presenting a weekly show for Sunday night before Compass or straight after the 7pm news? it would be a 35-40 minute show if they stuck to a 5 minute per state/territory program. Waste of time and money in its current iteration.
Unsure if this is a new thing or not, but have noticed ABC Victoria’s opener time stamps/codes are in AEST not AEDT, so it’s an hour wrong. Not a great look. Also not sure the last time Tam did the opener from the standing screen - she’s very desk bound these days.
TV Tonight is reporting that local news will be axed for the entire Easter long weekend this year, under the guise of giving newsrooms a rest.
given there’s a bare minimum of local news on the abc on a normal night, it’s not a huge surprise.
Network 10 levels of newsroom commitment here
Where are they reporting this? I cannot find an article or comment anywhere.
Reason it’s not on TV Tonight is because it’s a TV Blackbox exclusive ![]()
WA will continue to receive a local bulletin on all days except Good Friday.
No local radio bulletins on all four either (usually there is at least a local shift in the morning) except for WA.
Cost-cutting measure due to the newsroom being “millions of dollars over budget”
TV Tonight, posted on all their socials and their website.
10 far exceeds ABC for local news, and with fewer resources.
