Why would they do this?
This sounds so much better. Love it.
Because something that was 30 years old didn’t sound right for a 2025 national broadcast service. This remix modernises it while respecting the prominence of it.
I agree - IIRC they went into so much effort just to get all the separate parts of the original track that the end result they came up was pretty weak (albeit I’ve gotten use to that version) - at least this one shows they put in some effort.
Melbourne opener differs a little with the part of the theme they use before the titles. Also sounds a lot clearer in VIC than the NSW opener too?
For those interested
Thanks for putting together a clean version. It’s such a great theme. I suspect this re-recording is probably what the ABC intended originally, only they didn’t have the money to do so last year. Very glad that they’ve done so now, though!
Doubt that they didn’t have the money - was probably more of a rushed job.
Glad they’ve now taken the time to create something more decent, especially since they had spent a lot of effort getting all the different parts from the original tape.

Tasmania or NT? Typo in the press release?
I think it’s a typo.
This is the synopsis from yourTV online guide for Tasmania.
On the first Friday of August, an extended 35 minute edition of ABC News Tasmania with Stateline reporting and interviews on the issues affecting Tasmanians. Plus today’s top stories and latest news presented by Selina Bryan.
I wondered too, although the revised 80s theme didn’t go well with the graphics. I watched the news live tonight and was somewhat taken aback with the change… I think I’d need to watch and listen a few more times before coming to a view.
Was this change to the ABC News theme anticipated?
ABC News Victoria are using the “old” new Wall-Ansell news theme music this evening. What’s going on? ![]()
And again tonight, which unfortunately isn’t that surprising given the lack of polish we are well used to now on the Victorian 7pm.
To make things more bizarre, the new theme played out during the mid-bulletin title card sting.
Any competent experienced workers left at ABCV? Doesn’t feel like it.
The new news theme was back in Victoria tonight.
No federal politics/question time wrap on the Victorian 7pm last night (presumably the same elsewhere). When is Justin Stevens and the powers to be going to accept that endless feature stories with no relevance or connection to the day’s news actually makes for an irrelevant bulletin. I’m watching the 7pm because I want to know what happened today and the ABC as a public service broadcaster actually needs to communicate to its audience a coherent and accurate recap of the day’s events.
Technical difficulties at the start of weather on Victorian 7pm bulletin tonight (including the camera veering to the left of Tamara Oudyn), but eventually the graphics appeared.
Turned over to ABC News Qld tonight expecting a good wrap of the days news, except they just aired a lengthy investigation on a PNG power company ![]()
Felt very out of place so early in the rundown, and in the bulletin in general. Who is making these decisions?
