ABC News Content and Appearance

Should’ve left the previous package than spending $800k on this sub par rubbish. What a waste.

It needs to be remembered that they are a taxpayer funded organisation.

If they had spent say $2 mil on something better, then they would probably get criticised for spending too much and wasting money. If they did nothing and kept the old package, which had been in use for a while, they would probably get criticised for that too. They are damned if they do, damned if they don’t.

Yes it looks plain but it does the job, nothing more nothing less.

Hard disagree. The previous package had nothing wrong with it. They fixed the glarring issues with it years ago.

It still looked decent- it’s the ABC - what matters most is the content- that’s what people tune in for- news from a trusted source.

Website is also harder to navigate IMO as well.

And you don’t have to pay for the ad free experience

The concept on paper looked quite good, but the execution has been butchered.

They’ve cluttered what was quite a clean simple package, a refresh could’ve probably sufficed rather than a complete overhaul.

Where they really should’ve invested the funds was in upgrading the news Channel to HD.

Is there anything actually stopping this? Most, if not all of the ABC’s news content is now in HD, almost all TVs in use these days support MPGE4, and the limited number that don’t can access ABC News content via local and national radio networks.

Plus they are at MediaHub, so I doubt there would be technological limitations on their end.

It’s probably not wanting to take away the free emergency channel from the homes that don’t have MPEG4? They’ll get backlash if they do, so they’re waiting for the commercials to do it first?

I could have done a better job for $817k.

Local Radio fills the gap - they carry the local warnings and have the ability to do local coverage - radio is more accessible during major weather events.

People are better off listening to local radio during a crisis.

I know, but it’s the perception given they are essentially an official emergency broadcaster (I know Sky has the contract but not many have access).

Given there has been little backlash, or change in ratings since other networks have been going towards MPGE4 only in recent years, I doubt there would be much backlash apart from the usual suspects (i.e. News Corp and Sky who would complain either way).

TBH, the graphics would be better if they kept the same font as the previous package. I get that Reith font if the trend these days, but it just doesn’t work with these graphics.

And as I write this, they’ve updated one of the promos for the website and news app they’ve been running for the past few months with the new website and graphics - only issue is it’s with Lisa Millar, who has since left the ABC News division (even have an updated photo of her for the ender).

Has anyone noted the flipper has been made solid blue?

And Tony too. Like seriously, why make these campaigns on people who aren’t part of your news division?
