Perhaps it’s nothing, but I spotted this alternative variant of the ABC News logo being used in recent story thumbnails, not using the oneABC typeface (notice how there is no notch taken out of the E)

The subtle rounded corners are a nice addition.

Had noticed this also, I think mainly done for X, and assumed an alternative logo was used so it was bolder given on the regular one the weight is quite thin.

Does Sunday now go for 40 mins again? I know they stopped doing that a while ago but Melbourne will go to 7.40 it seems

Extended due to the events in Sydney.

EPG says this:

A special extended 40 minute edition of ABC News at 7pm with comprehensive reporting on the Bondi Junction Stabbing Attack as well as the latest on the day’s news.

Has the 8pm bulletin on the News Channel been named like this on the TV guide for a while, or is this just recently?

I thought it was like ‘ABC News National’ or ‘ABC News Late Edition’.

All the evening bulletins have different names for some reason i.e. ABC Nightly News, ABC National News, ABC News with Joe O’Brien, etc. Apparently it may have something to do with ratings coding.

It’s been like this for a decade or longer (but I don’t think since the channel launched).

My personal favourite is “ABC News Tonight” which is the 8pm hour AEST.

8pm is generally ABC News Tonight, Nightly News is normally now 10:00pm AEST so it might have been an error.

7pm QLD had a weather presenter tonight. Highly unusual for a weekend?

I believe @Biscuit45 lives in Perth
so he probably was referring to the 10pm AEST bulletin.

Talk is theres new graphics package rolling out later this year, across all platforms
Expect softer edges, rounded boxes, and a calmer look

This may have been an early test

Ooh, very interesting! It definitely appears to be the route they are taking with the new rounded thumbnail story previews.

I wonder if the oneABC typeface for graphics will still be utilised, modified, or changed.

I did feel the characters in the font were rather sharp and harsh, though it definitely fitted the black and white aesthetic of the 2017 relaunch, which has served them very well.

Curious if the current colour palette will continue
 :art::thinking:

More importantly, will the 1985 theme finally return?

Would rather they use the remix of Majestic Fanfare - would work on TV, radio and online.

1985 theme would still work well for 7pm, but wouldn’t suit the News Channel.

Openers on 7pm also need to have more localised title cards, rather than the generic ABC News (i.e. use a picture of Sydney with ABC News New South Wales on the screen, etc)

ABC is due for something, the black and white look went live in 2017. Assumed it would happen when they move into their (indulgent) Parramatta centre.

but just including my vote for the 1895 news theme over a fairly ugly piece of music composed by a pom.

Yes, that’ll fix the Sydney-centric criticism from around the country. Let’s celebrate moving our Sydney newsroom and studio from one part of Sydney to another part of Sydney and celebrate with a national graphics relaunch.

Not to mention while cutting resources and programming from regional centres and other capital cities like Adelaide.
