Could they go a little more local, would half an hour of pure local be too much, yes
First problem, filling the half hour with local, maybe able to get away with it in Sydney and Melbourne, but Darwin… I have doubts
Then you’d have content, it’d risk going down the 7/9 path of heavy focus on local crime, and worse a live cross to the scene of the crime 10 hours after it happened, adding nothing, but just repeating the story intro in a different location
Also, some people are time poor, they get their local, national, international in one half hour grab, asking sometime to commit to more time to free to air, is an ask, especially when people are committing less.
Potentially could, but there would need to be an upscaling of resources.
NT is a large geographical area, with half the population of Tasmania - it’d be a big investment compared to the size of the audience it would be serving.
Would also have the argument of would the resources simply be duplicating ABC local radio
Staff at ABC local already file multiple stories for radio (bulletins, country hour, countrywide, etc) and online, as well as TV programs such as Landline and Regional News. Also have occasionally seen local reporters on news channel and the 7pm news here in SA when there are events such as bushfires. However there is a chance that they send a camera operator from Adelaide for those, so may need to invest in technology.
Wasn’t the proposal when News Breakfast launched (pre mews channel) that they would occasionally take political interviews live from RN, AM and local radio? I do recall an election debate between Andrews and Guy moderated by Jon Faine being simulcast on TV.
Having watched Nine’s new presentation, and switching over to ABC News, really stood out, how much this news service really really needs a graphics update…and perhaps some set updates.
They barely finished the set upgrade program. The only weak link is the NSW set and there wont be any changes until they move to Parramatta, if at all.
Jeremy has presented the bulletin every single day since the Perth move.
Guessing if Set upgrades are happening they didn’t want to fly Lidia out? (although she is probably on leave after filling in quite often last year) But also they could have used the News24 Set and had the News24 come out of a different state?
That could also work, but I feel that they could use the majestic fanfare remix across both news and radio, keeping it consistent while not entirely replacing the 52 year tradition on radio.
Worth noting that the end of each state based 7pm ABC News bulletin tonight included a brief plug for the returning/new ABC Radio line-ups in each of the capital cities tomorrow.
