ABC News (Channel)

The full opener is actually really nice.

Still no ticker? What’s going on over there?

Was the flipper not on News Breakfast this morning?

Somehow, I wouldn’t be overly surprised if the flipper is reserved for Breakfast and Breaking/Developing News this time around. Probably not an entirely bad thing, because the On-Air Graphics don’t look totally weird or out of place without a ticker or flipper IMO.

A news channel without a ticker or flipper? They just managed to make themselves even more redundant for anyone with an internet connection who doesn’t have 30 minutes to watch a traditional news bulletin.

Yeah… Unless they are working on fixing it, it’s not a good look to not have a ticker/flipper on a 24 hour News Channel. It’s also gone back a step a bit not including the weather forecast either. I also liked that weather loop they had during ad breaks from other international News Bulletins.

There was a flipper on News Breakfast but it disappeared just before that finished at 9am.

Screen cap - includes reaction to the new flipper.

Annnd, the clock is gone again. Looking at the ticker box again, why is the text so small compared to the box? Is it to do with TV Graphic guidelines, or just how the new graphics package was designed? I don’t recall this being an issue on the previous package…

I’m pretty sure the lack of centre justification in the box is to allow for viewers whose TV is set to ‘overscan’ the picture; otherwise the text would be cut off. Still doesn’t explain why it needs to be so small. I have a feeling that some of the problem is the new ABC font as even on the web site it doesn’t look as clear as the previous fonts used. I don’t think it is as legible at low font sizes as it needs to be.

Would the clock text not be centered in the box because the NSW/Online feed clock also has the AEST / AEDT text that fits the rest of that empty room?

But even in that case the clock and AEST text still looks stretched to fill the box.

What’s with the white box on all your vids?

It looks like it is blocking out a watermark from a screen recorder

I wish that ABC were using yellow instead of the light blue. Yellow, black and white has been shown to work in their apps and online, the light blue is nice but just seems a tad off.

Well what do you know…

The national broadcaster is reportedly moving to bar Exelby from future on-air roles after a hilarious clip of her appearing to daydream while the camera cut back to her went viral. A spokeswoman has, however, denied this.

Well they might want to do a better job of getting this information out there, the story even made the morning news on Nine.

From TV Tonight

Updated: ABC News Director Gaven Morris said, “Live television is a demanding art and slip-ups will happen — our presenters are humans, not robots. We take on-air standards extremely seriously, but we don’t expect perfection. No one would ever be punished for a blooper and, while it isn’t appropriate to publicly discuss confidential details of people’s personal work arrangements, this has not happened to Natasha.

“Media reports that Natasha has been “banned”, “barred” or “fired” are untrue. Natasha is a freelance journalist who works as a contributor. She has been rostered for various shifts and has been assured since yesterday that we want that to continue. While she is not currently doing any on-air shifts, this will be subject to normal performance management. I have spoken to Natasha and conveyed our regret that this has attracted such attention.”

Where did the story originate? The news.com.au article posted here?

Can’t wait to see how Media Watch is going to cover all this, considering they started it all.
