It’s absolutely a live breaking news event. It’s the moment the nation’s biggest population centres stop to welcome in the new year.
What would you prefer the news headlines at midnight? Like it’s okay to stop for a moment and enjoy some fireworks.
CNN covers the ball drop in Times Square live every year.

International interest I’d say given IIRC it usually also ends up on the BBC, and the ABC airs it across the Asia-Pacific.

It also happens to be, annual?

So is the Melbourne Cup, or the Oscars.

And ANZAC Day, and Remembrance Day - both covered by the ABC in place of rolling news

I was just saying that as technically it is an Australian News network and is only in SD whereas ABC TV is HD and even ABC Entertains would be better than this IMO.
Would you rather they broadcast rerun news instead?
Not by any means I just pointing out something I found interesting

I reckon there’s no issue covering annual events was my point, they are celebrations or commemorations depending on the event that matter to the audience.
I don’t think networks stray away from other news of the day by doing so, just ends up being a busy news cycle if something else significant happens.

So the second that a journalist gets to asks a question in a VicEmergency press conference about active, emergency-level bushfires, ABC News cuts away to run a recorded story about fire risks elsewhere in the country.
It’s been 14 years and the ABC still doesn’t have a grip on how to do rolling news. Astounding.

Where is the heat warning for “southern, eastern”?
I think the crawler means southern and eastern states - which states are those? WA, SA, Vic, Tas (southern) plus NSW and QLD (eastern)?
Or does it mean south-eastern states?

it’s a clumsily written caption. And I still can’t stand the font they use there.

I like it when they say where they’re coming from off the top of the bulletin.

Clumsy copy which shouldn’t happen for emergency alert stuff.
Imo WA is just west, not southern. Southern is SA, VIC, TAS and maybe NSW. Eastern is VIC, TAS, NSW and QLD.
ABC with a scoop here - the election will be held on… a random Tuesday in April?

The fluff peaces today including a bus full of Elvis impersonators is lazy journalism IMHO.
Plenty of stories coming out of LA where I’m sure ABC could grab stories from affiliates.
