ABC New Year's Eve Coverage

Robbie Williams headlines the ABC’s New Year’s Eve celebration

Joining an already supersized, star-studded line up and ready to countdown to midnight on the NYE24 broadcast is none other than international superstar, Robbie Williams.

As well as performing a slew of hits on the NYE24 stage in front of the Sydney Opera House, ABC audiences will be treated to a behind the scenes look at the making of Williams’ brand new, feature length film Better Man, opening Boxing Day.

Robbie Williams said: “I love and adore Australia, and the Sydney fireworks are truly magical. To be ringing in the New Year in the country where my biopic movie, Better Man, was shot will be the perfect end to 2024 and the ideal start to 2025. I can’t wait to perform and celebrate with my incredible Australian fans”.

The last time Robbie performed in Australia was on his XXV Tour in 2023. The critically acclaimed stadium tour followed his triumphant performance at the 2022 AFL Grand Final.

Williams is undoubtedly one of the greatest popstars of all time. With six of the top 100 best-selling albums in British history, a huge 85 million album sales worldwide, 14 UK number one albums and a record breaking 18 BRIT Awards, he’s ready to entertain Australian audiences and ring in the New Year.

Set to create a New Year’s Eve to remember, Williams joins the already announced line up of Fanning Dempsey National Park (Bernard Fanning and Paul Dempsey), Casey Donovan, Cyril, 1300, Nooky, Randy Houser, Becca Hatch and G Flip.

In partnership with the City of Sydney, hosts Charlie Pickering, Zan Rowe and Concetta Caristo will kick off festivities on Tuesday 31 December at 8.30pm on ABC TV, ABC iview and across ABC socials on YouTube, Facebook and TikTok.

The concert will also be broadcast on ABC Local Radio, from 9pm AEDT.

International audiences can also tune in to ABC Australia, and the fireworks displays will be audio described for the vision impaired and available on the ABC listen app.

That’s quite a big name - kudos to whoever managed to get him onboard.

Out of all the cities to perform NYE (and promote his film Better Man), he chose Sydney? That’s awesome. And a big name to get too. And to keep it under wraps until now is good too.

Thats an impressive get - now we just have to hope the event goes ahead!

It makes sense considering (as the ABC’s press release touches upon) the link between Better Man and Australia.

For those who are wondering, five unions including Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) has been taking industrial action against NSW Government over wage rises - see public transport thread for discussion.

This threatens transport arrangements for December 31, with 250,000 people expected to descend into Sydney CBD. NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said a couple of days ago that if people could not safely get in and out of the city., she would recommend to Premier Chris Minns to cancel the 9pm and midnight fireworks.

If the fireworks are cancelled due to crowd control issues, can the concert still go ahead?

Rail unions make offer to “enable there to be minimal disruption” on NYE & festive season

They’ll withdraw most industrial action & refrain from new (until 07/01)

Anything kids based this year seeing as in previous years ABC ME used to host “The Early Night Show” or something along those lines.

Will be now they have called off the strike action - shame though that the union had to cave into the threats of the Government.

Robbie Williams’ performance at approx 11:45pm tonight, will be projected on the pylons with a singalong lyrics on top.

There was a rehearsal on it last night. Which you can see with the pic below.

And speaking of Robbie Williams, US network ABC is broadcasting his performance too on “Rockin Eve”. Highly guessing they’ll take it from the concert broadcasting tonight under pre-recorded.

And what’s the bet they’ll bugger up the countdown because the performers will drag out their performances and Zan, Charlie and the other one will be having an on-screen verbal wank.

Zan and Charlie about as pleasant to listen to as a 1Khz tone.

Baffles me why one of the networks doesn’t cover the Brisbane NYE fireworks. It’s no less exciting than Riverfire which gets coverage each year.
Would be a good community event for 7 which needs to rebuild in the city.
