ABC Local Radio

In further proof that the ABC must have a desire to pull 612 down the rabbit hole 4BC disappeared into, they persist with giving Ashwin Segkar the main fill in role.

He’s made up half the bfast duo, filled in on afternoons and this week on nights.

If you’ve caught as short as a sentence of him on air, you’ll know his voice is not suitable for radio. I’m not talking Tracey Bartram or Caroline Hutchinson style, far worse; as in completely unsuitable.

The mind boggles as to why he’s retained. Actually it doesn’t, it probably ticks some obscure diversity requirement. For the audience they need to return to the station, he does nothing to turn it around, only giving the audience more reason to turn off/not tune in.

Tim Gavel may have done 1 or 2 AFL matches form Maunka Oval.

While Gavel will be missed, hopefully the next generation will do something about ABC Canberra’s bias towards rugby union and league in a multicode city. There are plenty of AFL fans in Canberra and if it’s mentioned in the news, it’s often after second rate sports like basketball, etc.

I think the level of AFL coverage in Canberra is commensurate with interest.

If you compare the crowds of the handful of AFL games played each year at Manuka Oval to Raiders or Brumbies game, they are considerably lower.

Mate, have you see the Brumbies crowds of late? Remember, there’s people from all over Australia living in Canberra and most of those who are AFL fans aren’t going for GWS. There’s a large AFL a community in Canberra that isn’t adequately being served by ABC Canberra.

AFL premiership games get at least 10k. The Brumbies barely pulled 5k at a game this year https://www.smh.com.au/sport/rugby-union/canberra-crowds-disappear-as-brumbies-crash-to-frustrating-loss-20180512-p4zeym.html

That’s interesting…

They used to get close to a full house for Brumbies games 5-7 years ago.

Didn’t realise they had dropped off that much.

Some random ABC Sunshine Coast news:

Breakfast presenter Rob Blackmore is on paternity leave until September. Sarah Howells is filling in until his return.

Also - with usual Drive presenter, Sheridan Stewart away this week (the show originates from SC) - Bill McDonald filled in on Thursday and Friday on the Southern Queensland drive program.

All your ABC news is great, nothing random, keep it coming.

I don’t understand this, why isn’t there a SC only drive show? Now the SC drive show extends over what other regions? How can you present the right content with such diverse regions.

Meanwhile, Cathy Border is doing a fantastic job filling in at ABC Gold Coast. Is Karin producing drive?

They consolidated the SC and Southern drive shows at the beginning of the year.

Southern covers SC, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and Longreach broadcast areas.
The Cairns and Townsville programs merged as well and now cover Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Mt Isa.

Yes, Karin is still the producer - and is now also joined by Sally Rope.

Today’s Age has a piece on ABC Melbourne. Interesting takeaway, the most recent ratings for breakfast 5.30 to 7.45 are just 7.6. Sounds likr an unpleasant place to work.

Ali Moore has been filling in Jon Faine all this week.

I don’t get it. Why is she away from her own show to fill in for another? Weird.

Also don’t people just like to do something different for a bit?

ABC Melbourne has been evacuated due to a fire alarm and switched to ABC Sydney. Thought statewide drive from (I think) ABC Balarat would be more appropriate.

False alarm. ABC Radio Melbourne back to schedule

Laptop with appropriate stings etc and a mobile phone all that was needed to continue the broadcast with today’s technology. With a mobile phone for internet, broadcast quality audio could have continued. Switch news from Sydney if you must or have a journo read the headlines with the announcer. Or from Ballarat or somewhere.

Interesting to know if ABC would react as they did if they were in emergency mode and needed to evacuate.
