ABC Local Radio

Christine Holgate (ex-Aus Post) did that too, wore white to all her major appearances. Must be a thing.

In other news it seems that ABC Sydney has adopted the slogan “Now we’re talking/Now we’re talking Sydney” with similar themes (with the ABC chimes) being used across local programs.

I understand making the imagery sound consistent, but it was nice having shows have their own character. I have noticed that Richard Glover’s unique imagery has been toned down significantly over the past 1-2 decades.

Only being used in the capital cities, Launceston and the Gold Coast, with all other stations using the old stings and voiceovers. The new sounds are probably an attempt to try and improve ratings, and with all the presenter changes across the country. Bit lazy TBH with having the afternoons, evenings and weekend shows all use the same theme.

In Adelaide there has been a lot of positive reception to the new Breakfast duo (Sonya Feldholf and Jules Schiller) with many people saying that they are switching back after turning off from Stacey Lee and Nikolai Beilharz (Who replaced the previous presenter Ali Clarke, who left on the back of ratings of 15% +).

Also on the topic of Richard Glover, it appears that Thank God It’s Friday is returning 23rd February .

Radioinfo have buried the lede here…

[Ray] Hadley’s national program Country Music Countdown (up to its 533rd episode) will follow Cole’s in the capital cities from 10pm – 12midnight.

Wait I don’t think that part about Ray Hadley is right, or at the very least is misleading.

ABC Radio EPG for Adelaide says:

6pm (6:30pm AEDT): Weekend Evenings with Christine Anu
8:30pm (9pm AEDT): Saturday Night Country with Beccy Cole
9:30pm (10pm AEDT): Nightlife with Suzanne Hill

This marks the return of Saturday Night Country to ABC Metro stations after Nightlife was extended to 7 days in 2017.

Also Deb Tribe returns to Saturday Breakfast in Adelaide from tomorrow.

I think RadioInfo have combined two stories into one. Here’s a simple explanation from another article.

Essentially SNC is starting an hour earlier, with the first hour now being heard on all ABC Metro stations again. So the program now runs 9pm - 12pm Saturday nights, with the 10pm-12am section only on Regional stations. They’ll then join Nightlife in progress at midnight.

Ray Hadley is not being heard on ABC. Rather it’s alluding to that his Country Music Countdown will be heard in the cap city markets on Nine Radio stations after SNC has finished its 1 hour Metro airing.

Cheers. Poor writing then from Radio Info.

Is there any other kind of writing they do

Yes, took me a couple of reads to try and figure out what it was saying. They also didn’t mention Hobart despite having all the other capitals including Canberra and Darwin specified. Glad it’s starting an hour earlier so I’m less likely to encounter it. Saturday nights are already tough trying to remember to get the speaker to play ABC Hobart instead of our usual Northern Tasmania so I can avoid getting the country music but then waking up to Macca on a Sunday. :frowning:

Wonder how after years of cuts to the ABC that somehow Macca is still on air. Apparently there are still many that turn up at his outside broadcasts, but still, with the ABC appearing to be aiming for a more broader, and youthful demographic, seems a bit out of place. Also feels like they could replay an old episode and no one could tell. Seems like management must be happy for him to come in and do his thing once a week, as I’ve never heard any promos for Australia All Over. It’s also still on delay in SA, as the show still finishes at 10am, instead of 9:30am if it was live. They’ve also taken it off Radio Australia, which now takes RN programming.

IMO they should give the gig to Warrwick Long, but it appears that they are building him for bigger stuff, with him hosting summer Breakfast, and being a regular fill in on Drive. Alternatively they could give it to Emma Pedler, who filled in for Macca over summer in 2022-23, however she also hosts the Eyre Peninsula Breakfast show, so may need to drop down to 4 days or get a replacement for her. They could also do what they did with Radio Australia and just take RN programming (including Sunday Extra), if they wanted to save costs.

Anyone would do. It’s a great concept and a great time for a show like that but the program is a million times more tolerable and interesting when there is a fill in and less of the assault to the ears from the weird song choices, Macca singing over it and the extra loud birds and dogs etc…

Not to mention the dingo screams :astonished:

But yes, great concept, questionable host.

ABC Announces Three New Audio Appointments

The ABC is delighted to announce three key senior audio appointments in its Content division.

Leading radio executive Mike Fitzpatrick will be the ABC’s new Head of Capital City Network and Sport, reporting to Head Audio Content, Ben Latimer. Double J Executive Producer Phoebe Bennett is the new Content Director for triple j Double j and Beverley Wang, the Stop Everything! and Life Matters host will be the ABC’s first National Culture Correspondent.

The ABC’s Head Audio Content, Ben Latimer said: “The ABC is proud of its position as the most comprehensive radio and on-demand audio offering of any media organisation in Australia. These exciting new roles for Phoebe and Beverley, alongside the appointment of Mike Fitzpatrick to spearhead the Capital City and Sports Networks, reflect ABC’s ongoing commitment to providing unmatched audio experiences to our Australian audiences.

“Mike’s exceptional leadership skills, combined with the expertise of ABC’s Audio leadership team, position us perfectly to enhance our Capital City Network and Sports output. We eagerly anticipate Mike’s contributions and are excited to welcome him to the ABC family.”

Mike Fitzpatrick is one of the country’s top audio executives, having overseen the Triple M network for 11 years. He was Head of Digital Sport for Southern Cross Austereo’s Listnr platform, led the negotiation and creation of the first commercial FM broadcast of Test Cricket and managed the SCA sports team to record ratings for both Triple M AFL and NRL. He also co-created Triple M Melbourne’s top-rating FM breakfast show The Hot Breakfast with Eddie McGuire and led the content side of the network’s digital audio transition. He starts in the key ABC role on February 12.

On his appointment, Mike said “Growing up in regional NSW my love of radio was ignited listening to ABC local radio, and I feel privileged to be chosen to work with the many talented people within the organisation. I’m looking forward to focussing on growing the capital city audience, and the vital role ABC Radio plays in entertaining and informing all Australians.”

New triple j Double J Content Director, Phoebe Bennett has more than a decade’s experience in radio and podcasts in Australia and the UK, including at the ABC and BBC Radio 6 in Manchester. As Executive Producer at Double J, Phoebe was responsible for bringing across the award-winning podcast Take 5 with Zan Rowe to ABC TV.

Of the role, Phoebe said “I’m pumped to be working with the best music brains in the business and an epic team of young creatives. It’s an exciting time to be stepping into the role.”

Beverley Wang takes up her post as National Culture Correspondent in coming weeks. As Culture Correspondent, she will combine her extensive knowledge of pop culture with her experience in journalism and broadcasting to provide analysis and commentary across all ABC platforms, while continuing to host of Stop Everything! and Friday episodes of Life Matters.

Beverley says, “As a kid who was raised on pop culture, I learned to speak English from Sesame Street – I feel like my whole life has been driving toward this moment. I’m super excited to bring the pop culture analysis we’ve been deep diving into for the past six years on Stop Everything! to a wider audience across multiple ABC platforms. We’re awash in pop culture, but in our time-poor world, we often have little time to process its significance. I hope to help people think more deeply about our constantly shifting culture and be entertained along the way.”

Further senior ABC audio appointments will be announced in coming months.

Does the ABC Capital city network include Hobart, Darwin and Canberra??

They’re listed on the Wikipedia page in the capital city ones but interesting question. They have a mix of the capital and regional programming - e.g. Country Hour on Hobart which I don’t think appears in the other capital city markets?

Hopefully this is the start of exciting change at abc radio. Needs to modernise.

Country Hour is also in Darwin (12:30-1:30), and the second half is in Adelaide (12:30-1).

Mike Fitzpatrick formerly of SCA hopefully has learned his lesson not to engage in a workplace romance (as he did with counterpart Gemma) and they both ended up out of jobs with a good excuse for SCA to downsize and save on those positions.

not in Melbourne on 3AW.
