I remember Mark Colvin back announcing Ashley Hallâs stories on PM back in the day, but did Ashley ever present PM as a fill-in?
Big change to ABC Radio Melb schedule. Sammy J only doing 4 days breakfast next year. Charlie Pickering will do Fridays.

Charlie Pickering joins ABC Radio Melbourne Breakfast in 2023
Comedian Charlie Pickering will present Friday Breakfast on ABC Radio Melbourne next year, with Sammy J returning for the Monday to Thursday shows.
ABC Radio Melbourne Manager Dina Rosendorff said the shared Breakfast shift was introduced to accommodate Sammy Jâs increasingly busy schedule, which will include a touring comedy show and new television projects.
âItâs an absolute win for Melburnians, with two of the funniest, smartest and insightful people around giving their take on whatâs happening in this city across the week,â she said.
Sammy J said for the past year he had been trying to âjuggle everythingâ.
âIâve been doing a number of jobs, and I want to keep doing them all,â he said.
âThis is a way of doing everything that I love doing.â
Mr Pickering said he âcanât waitâ.
âI grew up listening to 774 ⊠to me thatâs the sound of Melbourne,â he said.
âIâm really glad that I can throw my voice into the ring.â
There are no other changes to the ABC Radio Melbourne line up next year.
Ali Moore will present Mornings until March, when Virginia Trioli returns from extended leave.
All other regular presenters will be back the week starting Monday, January 16
At least you wonât see his lack of expressions on the radio
If 774 want any chance of being No. 1 they cannot have a split breakfast roster. If Sammy wouldnât do all five days they shouldâve removed him altogether.
Probably did:
They arenât chasing number 1 anyway. Until Ross Stevenson retires theyâll just put out a decent alternative to 3AW and be happy at number 2.
ABC Radio has announced changes to the line ups in Darwin and Hobart. Darwinâs new line up starts on January 16 next year, to be followed by Hobart on January 30.
good to see Helen Shield doing well. Ive known her for years - back when she did breakfast at 96.5 in Brisbane
Its hardly a refresh, more like a shuffling of the deck chairsâŠ
Potentially a demotion for Helen Shield, with a move to night from a popular arvo showâŠ
Hopefully it brings some more consistency to the night programming though. The last few years have been terrible. You donât know if youâre getting a local one or if youâre going to get Vic or NSW until it comes on and then sometimes you get the local one but theyâre also going to Vic or to the NT etc⊠Doesnât happen with the other shifts and only seems to have been the last few years. I can understand changes were needed when Mel Bush moved to cover Leonâs Mornings program but the amount of swapping and unpredictability is ridiculous.
Itâs interesting, we donât know if the staff actually asked for the changes, but it doesnât seem like a win for them or listenersâŠchange for change sakeâŠ
Trioli is let down by woefully obscure content, Mitchell is #1 overall by a country mile as thatâs what more of the audience wants. Why Virginia doesnât take more of a lead on editorial direction of her show is baffling. Sheâs far from Mike Moore and she knows what made John Faine so popular who really did serve it up to Neil.
Itâs great to see such a successful station as 3AW, on AM no less, however it is at the expense of a very weak ABC.
Charlie Pickering may have thought ABC, then as 3LO was the sound of Melbourne, it rated better then. Sadly far from that now.
Who was supposed to be on Tas nights yet was often unavailable?
Why didnât ABC have a local backup presenter?
Sounds very poorly organised. Can often get a good audience at night who will switch on in the morning with the breakfast shows.
ABC Newcastleâs Kia Handley will be stepping into the stations local Drive timeslot next year, after spending the last few years presenting the networked mornings program to a number of regions.
Great for Kia. Whatâs happened to Paul Turton? Sacked?
Would be much better for ABC Newcastle and Upper Hunter to move to local mornings and leave statewide output to other markets.
Or do the right thing entirely and move back to local mornings in each market.
they used to do that?
If that is the case then we should be talking about 1990s or 2000s, is that correct?
They are swapping shifts. Paul is moving to the Mornings program next year. Some of which I imagine will be shared to various regional NSW stations, as per what Kia was doing.
