ABC Local Radio

The 5am - 6am hour of Gold Coast breakfast with Bern Young has been simulcast to both Brisbane and Sunshine Coast since the start of the year (although it was going to Sunshine Coast last year already), due to the overnight programs currently coming in live and leaving the one hour gap due to daylight savings. To be fair though - in that hour they do traffic/transport updates and weather check-up for the entire South-East Queensland region - so it can be argued its more relevant than a one hour delayed overnight program.

Thanks, great to know.

It’s quite the stop gap to pipe a multi market program not from the metro market into the metro market.

Spencer Howson started at 5am, effectively finished at 7:45am (allowing for the 15-minute news followed by 30 minutes of AM), and then Steve Austin started mornings at 8:30am (when most people in this part of the world have started the work day). That scheduling seemed sensible and worked, not sure why it needed to be changed - the 45 minutes of news a logical break between two local shows

Agree.

The timing of the hours Spencer (or any metro breakfast beginning at 5am) was on catered for the content to be sharper each hour with reducing time available:

55mins in the 5 o’clock hour
45 mins after 6
35 mins after 7

Total: 135 mins

Now they have 45, 35, 30, 55 to fill. Total 165 mins.

It’s now more in prime time, so you can’t rehash the earlier content the same way.

Fiona Wyllie is not presenting her statewide drive show today. Local programming for Coffs and MNC.

Kirsty Reading is presenting drive for ABC South East NSW for Tathra fires. Lots of stations: https://www.facebook.com/pg/abcsoutheastnsw/about/?ref=page_internal

Thanks @glen2006, I’m glad to see the injection of new, capable talent to ABC Gold Coast.

The weekend morning announcer, Julie Clift is a marked improvement this year to the theatre woman last year. Julie has the clear skill of an accomplished broadcaster.

Cathy Border is often mentioned producing drive.

Chloe Maxwell, yes, the model ‘found’ on ACA in the 90’s made a very credible debut last year both on and off air.

With AFL, ABC would sometimes send Peter Booth or Tim Lane to the SCG for Swans matches. Mike McCann also did SCG matches too.

For those interested - ABC announced their Commonwealth Games commentary team and some coverage details last week (Article here).

Mr Morris said the ABC would be broadcasting regular updates across all its metropolitan and regional stations during the day with a live evening program broadcast each evening from 7.00 pm AEST, except during the live coverage of AFL and NRL matches.

Grandstand Digital will once again be the home for continuous coverage. The ABC listen App will also feature a dedicated ‘pop-up’ Games channel which will provide updates across the day.

The ABC’s 2018 Commonwealth Games broadcast starts at 7.00 pm AEST on Wednesday, April 4 with the Opening Ceremony live from the Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast, hosted by Quentin Hull and guest presenter, Nicole Dyer.

Broadcast Team:
Karen Tighe: Host.
Clint Wheeldon: Swimming
Rob Woodhouse: Swimming
Alister Nicholson: Cycling, Hockey, and Rugby 7’s
Quentin Hull: Athletics, Triathlon, and Ceremonies
Patrick Johnson: Athletics
Corbin Middlemas: Basketball, Boxing, and sports updates
Tim Gavel: Hockey and sports updates
Zane Bojack: Cycling and sports updates
Shannon Byrne: Gymnastics and sports updates
Matt Clinch: Netball and sports updates
Brett Sprigg: Diving and sports updates

I’ve always wondered why Karen Tighe hasn’t been on the AFL coverage.

Isn’t she on the Northern Grandstand coverage for NRL?

I don’t think so, think Ned Hall does the studio these days.

Don’t recall there being a studio host for many years. Possibly Tracey Parish was the last in Melbourne. Now with so many games the crosses are straight from one game to the next.

Of course Karen hosted Saturday Afternoon Sport on ABC TV in Victoria during the 1990s before moving to Perth.

Does ABC still have people at matches for around the grounds coverage- like Phil Parnell or David McKay did back in the day?

Not whenever there are overlapping games. Sometimes it’s just relaying the scores other times it’s someone there as you can often hear another team commentating for another market in the background.

But yes, the days of Cleo at Victoria Park LO or Al Martello at VFL Park for AW are long gone.

Recently she has been hosting Grandstand Digital’s coverage of the South Africa-Australia test series as well as the Grandstand at Stumps podcast.

Jon Faine has taken leave from his mornings program after he was criticised last week for comparing disability activist Carly Findlay’s chronic skin condition to a “burns victim”.

The only promo I’ve heard him do was him just stumbling on his words like Rob…Brough.

Wow, they’re going to axe Faine over this or not renew his contract?

Can’t get around the paywall. How long are they saying he’s on leave? Last week he said he was taking four days off and Ali Moore would fill in.

There is something a bit fishy about this imbroglio. I heard the interview live and thought Faine handled a delicate situation well. Naturally the Herald Sun are going to town on him, they have history and The Age own 3AW so also have an interest.

It’s for several weeks (the leave was pre-planned before the interview happened)
