Three promos from 10.
The reason any nominations are weird are due to the process in which they are fielded. Cheap Seats not being nominated is clearly an issue with 10 having no many comedies to nominate in the same category.
It is a weird process and it seemed to favour shows which were just screened and therefore fresh in people’s memories like Carols by Candlelight and The Yearly With Charlie Pickering. Odd that these one-off specials are in these categories but not The Cheap Seats and The Hundred with Andy Lee.
Especially in the case of The Yearly With Charlie Pickering which is basically the same thing as The Weekly With Charlie Pickering but we have both. The votes would be split so neither will win.
Also odd is how the Gold Logie category is almost identical to the Presenter category now. The only difference was and Andy Lee was swapped for Hamish Blake there and Asher Keddie was added.
By all accounts, Usher is not quite a nice guy off-camera. Emdur much more deserving.
There was no public vote for these nominations?
It was always going to be a mess combining Most Popular and Most Outstanding categories and trying to pass them off as “Best”. The way nominees are chosen is about as clear as mud. What is the assessment criteria exactly?
But it looks like a new show like Tipping Point struggles to get nominated but strangely so does a long running, often nominated show like Home & Away. Meanwhile, lesser known shows on streaming services have been boosted. This process has also spectacularly backfired for TV Week’s beloved Home and Away.
I have no issue with Robert Irwin being nominated for Best New Talent because he would be a worthy recipient but not the Gold Logie. He was definitely the surprise package this year and impressed most people who watched the show, but surely his work away from television would’ve been a big factor in listing him for gold. Next year I think he could be a very good choice for nomination but this year after only four weeks on air is a bit of a joke. I imagine a lot of people aren’t happy with his Gold Logie nomination.
Thought Gold Logie would be like an industry award not a newcomer award
But he is not a New Talent. He has done television before with Crikey! It’s the Irwins and Irwin Family Adventures as well as many guest spots.
Mediaweek and Inside Film has done the stats for this year’s nominations.
Logies nominations by FTA network
ABC 50 (51 according to the broadcaster’s press release above)
Seven 19
Nine 16
10 10
SBS 5
Netflix lead the streaming platforms’ nominations with 11 in total (the other was for Eddie’s Lil’ Homies, also shown on NITV). Netflix was followed by:
- Prime Video with eight nominations (for The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, Deadloch, and Hot Potato: The Story of The Wiggles)
- Stan with eight nominations (for Population 11, CAUGH*T, Scrublands, Wolf Like Me, The Tourist)
- Disney+ with three nominations (for The Clearing, Matildas: The World at Our Feet)
- BINGE with three nominations (for Love Me, Strife)
- Paramount+ with one nomination (for NCIS: Sydney)
UPDATED
Netflix, Prime and Stan knocking on 10’s door for noms. Awkies.
Wasn’t this new nomination process supposed to help 7, 9 and 10. The ABC smashed them.
The new process did zilch for the main channels outside the Gold Logie and Presenter award.
Time to revert to the old system perhaps? Also, how do they determine the popularity of the shows (and cast) on the streaming sites, when their data isn’t shown that regularly?
I think the nominees are actually quite good, theres just the glaring ommision of Home & Away. Perhaps they need bonus points for being available free to air.
I believe ratings accounted for 10%. So if streamers did not provide audience figures then they should get 0 against that metric. Whether or not that happened im not sure.
Sorry, I didn’t know about other shows.
But I will add that I still think it’s embarrassing that he’s up for gold. Next year, maybe, but not this year. I’m glad that Julia Morris is up though.
IMO they should swap out Robert Irwin and instead include Stefan Dennis. He’s done some really good work since the show returned. Or won’t he be included because they don’t believe he’ll get many votes?
Felix Cameron is nominated for New Talent and Best Actor (for his role in Boy Swallows Universe). Wasnt there a thing that new-comers weren’t able to be up for other awards? Or am i mistaken? Either way, good on this young lad.
It’s good that home and away only got 1 nomination but was Neighbours eligible for Logies voting this year I love Neighbours and want them to finally win a Logie since Natalie Blair won in 2009.
