I thought they were deliberately not pushing their personalities over the past few years so there wasn’t conflict with the AACTAs
Wasn’t it partly also due to TV Week’s ties with Nine which don’t exist now?
Good to see Seven, Nine and 10 promoting for us to vote for their stars and shows to win.
Nine is campaigning for both Karl and Hamish. And is great to see them promoting their shows and for us to vote for them. Well done to them.
For 10, i’ve seen quite a few ads for us to vote for Melissa Leong for the Gold and Most Popular Presenter. Perfect timing for them, as MasterChef is currently airing so she in peoples minds. But have seen zero ads for Julia Morris.
Ive seen quite a few ads from Seven too - but mainly for Sonia Kruger and very little for Ray Meagher.
Viewers can’t vote for “Most Outstanding” categories
And 10 gave it a garbage timeslot on and a garbage multichannel.
Viewers wouldn’t even know what it is.
First guest performer for this year’s awards revealed: English singer-songwriter Calum Scott.
EDIT:
I have it on reasonably good authority that Amanda was shocked (and frankly livid) that she wasn’t a nominee this year. Surprised a lot of people in the industry. I believe she really thought she had a strong chance to win at the previous Logies, and had anticipated (at the very least) a nomination.
Oh please. She hosts a mediocre lifestyle program on a low rating Friday night. Why on earth would she think she deserves one?
Wasn’t it both the industry and ratings that picked the nominees this year? So why would the industry be shocked that she missed out on a nomination?
The Living Room gets beaten almost weekly in the last 18 months by both Better Homes and Gardening Australia, so Joh Griggs and Costa had a better chance of being nominated - which sadly, weren’t nominated either.
RE: Gold
Although, even though it’s attached to a current show(s), both of these people would be well and truly deserving for their ‘careers’ to date, having been nationally prominent personalities, often on top-rating programming (such as major sports, BH&G was once & a couple of seasons of House Rules were too for Johanna and for Amanda something like Talkin Bout Your Gen used to be massive).
Bruce McAvaney a special mention too.
Although the Gold is for “current shows”, I agree that both Johanna and Amanda have had big careers and are quite prominent television personalities. Amanda has been nominated before, and Johanna should be nominated too for her career (like mentioned above - Better Homes, Sportsworld and leading Sports host; House Rules etc).
No “sports stars” have been nominated yet. Bruce McAvaney is a big name, and a very long career on the telly. One day, i hope he is considered too.
Bruce would be deserving of a Hall of Fane award first.
Can’t believe I’m saying this as a tv nut from childhood, but the Logies are outdated and really irrelevant these days.
They’re not what they used to be… so easily manipulated by networks and their PR departments. We’ve seen many winners in recent years who are not really the “most popular” in their categories and not the most deserving of the awards.
TV Week no longer has the readership it used to when the awards began… they’ve lost their relevance like the old King and Queen of Pop Awards that disappeared decades ago.
They’re lucky to have survived this long I guess.
That said, I still enjoy the broadcast. It’s nice seeing the networks coming together to celebrate their work.
I really wish for a host again but seems like that’ll never happen.
Started losing its way when Karl Stafanovic won it 11 years ago, IMHO. Also personally didn’t like seeing Hamish Blake or Tom Gleeson win it either, Grant Denyer was a bit better, but not by much.
IMO, if we take modern times, the likes of Lisa McCune, Kate Ritchie, Rebecca Gibney, Ray Meagher and Asher Keddie were far more deserving. Actors, the talent.
Rove I found an exception, I’d have him in Karl, Hamish and Tom’s category, however he has more of a legacy and mayne icon status, considering he won multiple times (so that’s no lie especially back then) and his show’s peak ratings & longevity back-it up he was the most popular personality for that era, again IMO.
Hamish is fav odds to take it out again which is a shame
The Gold Logie is awarded to the most popular personality on Australian television during the past year. They don’t necessarily need to have a great “legacy” or to have achieved “icon” status. That’s what the Hall of Fame award is for.
I’d rather see the award go to the personality who most engaged the audience. Hamish Blake and Tom Gleeson fit that bill- engaging personalities who actually draw viewers to a network. I’ll be disappointed if Karl wins considering his show tanks and he is more known for being controversial.
