2SM 1269 Sydney

Nah … I’ve kind of just done my own thing. I find I get more interaction from the Facebook page - it’s a great tool for podcast links, story extensions, video’s etc. I would like to see some money spent on our website, but I try not to worry about things I can’t control - rather focus on my 4 hours on air.

I suppose there’s really not much to achieve going hard and heavy on those not in power, or likely to be in power in the near future.
You’re doing a great job Marcus! You’re living the dream!

I’m sure the majority of us in this forum would have to agree that Marcus’ new program is the best thing Sydney commercial AM radio has had since the 2GB/2UE merger.

It’s refreshing to finally hear some decent varieties of opinions on the airwaves.

I really appreciate @Marcus_Paul posting on this forum. I am not aware of other commercial announcers (let alone breakfast announcers) posting on media spy unless they go under a different name.

The reality of political broadcasting now is that you’re dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t - there will always be people who think you’re too harsh or too weak (and it’s possible you’ll never hear from people that are satisfied)

Too many of our politicians won’t appear on certain shows (both TV and radio) because they don’t believe they get a fair run or it goes against their ideology, if you’re able to get people from the broad spectrum of political beliefs/parties on your show then you’re doing something right.

As long as interviews are respectful, talent will return.

Chummy is a different category of descriptor, that’s being respectful and may imply you’re friends outside the interview, in each other’s social circle (but not the former Premier’s awkwardly coined ‘love circle’)

As a recent convert from 2GB I do enjoy the 2SM breakfast show, and sometimes Laws, though his callers are often really bad. The afternoon show is also good as it has news and topics. I’m sorry to say though the weekend shows are just awful! I listened to a guy called Dave and aftet an hour turned off. Just awful callers talking absolute rubbish. I felt dumber after hearing it. It’s a shame as 2SM could really.give 2GB a run, but not with the terrible, boring radio I just heard.

2SM are full of contradictions … some really good and interesting radio interspersed with total amateur hour stuff. Frustrating often but as they are not rated in the surveys it’s impossible to get a clear read on their success in Sydney, the biggest radio market in the nation. Hopefully the station kicks up a gear or two if Alan Jones joins the lineup next year.

I’d be surprised if their true audience in Sydney is any higher than say News Radio or Radio National. Most callers seem to be from regional areas, which probably says a fair bit.

I agree. I’ve mentioned it earlier, but 2SM is extremely listenable from 5am-3pm weekdays. Outside of that, it really is the same plain radio it has been for a very long while now.

Slowly slowly they’ll get there.

Yep … 2SM makes little or no effort after 3pm weekdays as their programming withers into a wasteland especially all those hours of talking sport… the audio equivalent of listening to paint drying. Alan Jones drive show next year??

When the owner of the network is also in his 80s what do you expect, I wonder if there is a succession plan. I thought his son was in the business also??. Jones for 2SM is probably a logical move which would allow him to broadcast into his heartland, country NSW and into Queensland. Perhaps mornings if Laws moves into retirement or maybe network breakfast, then again maybe drive.

I can’t see Caralis letting Gloria loose on his network unless Jones agrees to fund any defamation proceedings or litigation that arises from the editorial content in the star broadcaster’s show.

The Australian this morning reports that Jones exit contract with 2GB prevents him from working breakfast or morning radio for 2 years. If he would be heard on 2SM and network stations it would need to be after 12noon. Interesting.

Commercial breaks say it all. Listen to the clients, what are their value? How often to their commercials appear? How many clients are there? Direct/agency split?

Longer term, is there a large churn of clients or quite stable?

You can make an educated guess from those.

Also, welcome to @Soarkle751. Good on you for finding the forum, signing up and contributing.

So a 6 month settle in for AJ on 2SM Drive until mid-2022 and then whooshka … into brekky after that? His last 2GB show was 29 May 2020. The 6 months could act as AJ’s probation period against law suits etc too !

I don’t think so guys. Look, for Alan to join us would be great obviously for me too.
However unless there are some major changes at the station I can’t see it happening.
For instance we’d need a full sales team, and also enter the survey to make it worthwhile as AJ wouldn’t come cheap.
I just can’t see the appetite from BC for this.

A bit harsh to be honest. Obviously my show, Laws and Brent are news / content based while the guy you refer to is more a friendly jock doing the lighter side of things. Maybe it simply adds to the variety on the Network?

C’mon Marcus … we need 2SM back in the Big Game in Sydney … Australia’s biggest radio market. I think AJ still has the fire in the belly and with some points to prove against his old shop. He might be a bit cheaper than previously imagined. Worth a chat with him?

Actually Melbourne is now Australia’s biggest radio market in terms of licence area population and advertising revenue.
